Ferdinand Porsche designed the famous VW beetle when he was working under a German firm to create the "peoples car." The beetle has a boxer engine, this is the engine that was later made famous by Porsche. Despite Porsche's early career it wasn't until 1948 that we saw the first Porsche car. During the war Ferdinand was sent to jail for nazi collaboration and was later bailed out by his son Ferry who had started the Porsche factory in Austria, after his release they built the Porsche 356 with left over beetle parts. The new car immediately attracted the upper class and was a huge success. Porsche started to make some of the fastest cars the world had ever seen especially with the release of the 911 series in 1963.
