| Founded:
1922, William Lyons and William Walmsley. First Car: SS1, Standard six-cylinder engine 1931. Brief History: On September 4, 1922, in Blackpool, England, two young motorcycle enthusiasts, William Lyons and William Walmsley, set up the Swallow Sidecar Company to produce sidecars for motorcycles. They continued this tradition until WWII. They started building cars in the late 1920's, early 1930's but it wasn't until 1935 that the name Jaguar was used, this changed occurred when William Heynes joined the company as chief engineer. Jaguar than continued making several advances in race car and sports car technology, introducing some of the worlds classics like the Jaguar E-type and XJ series. In 1989 FORD announced it's intent to buy 15% of Jaguars shares after a few weeks debate FORD offered a full bid for the company, it was later approved at a share holders meeting. |
