width-fixer Oldies But Goodies - Anniversary Weekends

June 30 1990 It was a beautiful day and there were some beautiful cars as the Severely Disabled Chicken Coupe waits in line for Doc's maiden run.

My son, Patrick Henkelman and I were Doc's Pit Crew for the first couple of years. We sure missed Patrick when he moved to Denver in June of 1991 and I had to take on the tasks he had performed. I always said I was Doc's biggest handicap because I was his Pit Crew and I knew nothing about cars!

June 30 1990 In "Street" class, the cars are slow enough to allow riders. I rode with Doc during his maiden voyage down the 1/4 mile and snapped this photo on the starting line. His first ET was 23.73 at 51.36 mph. as he was being very cautious with his "chicken coop, built with junk-yard parts!"

End of Day 1: Patrick checks it out, and with a great sigh of relief says, "It didn't break."

July 15 1990 Patrick directs Doc into the water-box for his burn off. When there is enough smoke, it indicates that the tires are hot. Drag racers do this to make the tires "sticky" so they get good traction at the starting line.

July 15 1990 Patrick, the pit crew in action. Doc set his best time today of 14.59 at 93.55 mph.
