Bush cuts Gore lead, Gore whacks Bush lead in poll

From wire reports -- In new poll results released Monday, Republican Presidential nominee George W. Bush held a 40-point lead over Vice President Al Gore, while Gore maintained a slim 33-point margin over Bush. Green Party candidate Ralph Nader held firm with 68% of likely voters, according to pollster Daniel "Dan the Man" Bunton.

Other results showed Pat Buchanan clinging to 91%, and six others tied at 22%.

The poll of 1117 likely voters conducted August 10-13 has been widely denounced as inaccurate. National pollster John Zogby questioned Bunton's methods.

"Those results are impossible," said Zogby. "Depending on how you add up the numbers, you could have counted as much as 389%. It doesn't make any sense."

"What the hell is he talking about?" Bunton responded. "I stand behind my results. Unlike some other pollsters, I give 110% to my work."

Commentators and news editors were surprised by some of Bunton's results. President Clinton, despite being ineligible to run for a third term, was among those receiving 22%. Another surprise result was the 22% mark for deceased former President Richard M. Nixon, who left the White House in disgrace in 1974 following the Watergate scandal. 22% is the lowest rating for Nixon since his death.

A spokesperson for the Bush campaign noted that the Bunton poll "is only one method for determining the next President. We look forward to seeing who has more attractive bumper stickers and lawn signs, and who hires the best ad agency."

The Gore campaign saw the results as good news. "Yea," said one source.
