The surrounding 92 villages scattered around the city bust the population to 235 000 people, which makes Tetova the second larges city in the country. Tetova is a multicultural and multinational city with a long and interesting interethnic cooperation. Majority of the citizens of Tetova are Albanians. There are other nationalities living in the city. The Turkish community living in Tetova contributes only 1.2% in the census of the population of the city. Tetova is a beautiful and trading city, and there are a lot of stores, shops, and markets. Since the creation of the city, the small business enterprises have given a pretty and good-looking panorama to the city. The small stores can be found in every corner or neighborhood. In these stores, one can find products such as food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, hygienic products etc. Tetova is a city with a lot of different kinds of style stores offering brands and designs. There are four major shopping malls full of stores, caf places, and other stores providing different kind of products and services to the citizens. The shopping malls follow the logic of family shopping as they offer a big supermarket for the everyday needs, clothes stores and very relaxing caf places. To accommodate and satisfy the costumer needs, most of the shopping malls have their own parking lot and in this way they facilitate the shopping process. In the stores of the shopping malls, the prices are standard as they are in most shops in Tetova. The shopping mall just opposite the post office offers the same services like the other malls. This shopping mall is the oldest.   It has shops that sell clothes, very popular pastry stores, hair-cutters shops and caf places. In the Yellow mall can be found electronic stores offering computer services and wireless internet connection and this can be useful for those students who want to expand their field of studies. In addition to shopping malls, Tetova has several markets. Most popular markets are Vero in the entrance of the city, Erzana Markets which are situated in the center, and the Ramstore center has its own market as well. In the markets, fresh products such as fruits and vegetables can be bought.
Across the shopping malls is the Cultural Center. The art association is located in the building of the Cultural Center. There is the museum and several Cultural and Artistic center among Xheladin Zeqiri founded in 1949.
The name Tetova comes from two Albanian words Tet-eight and vo eggs. The legend says that an Albanian Jew borrowed eggs from an Albanian egg seller. When the Albanian Jew returned the eggs to the egg seller, the native Albanian told that those eggs are not enough because the eggs do not weigh as much as the eggs that he had given him. So, the Jewish Albanian had to purchase two more eggs in order to return the weight of the eggs that the egg seller measured. After the Albanian Jewish returned the eggs to the native Albanian, he told him, I am a Jew, but you are more Jewish than I am. based on this legend the name Tetova appears in the geographical map. Albanians from Tetova distinct themselves as a hard working people. Most of them had their own business enterprises and maid their living very well. In all over the tourist centers of ex Yugoslavia, a restaurant or a bakery shop must be owned by a Tetovar. Almost every each family had one member of the family working outside Tetova, in the country or out in to the western countries. All this effort of being separated by the love ones was paid off. Today, the Tetovars are among the wealthiest Albanians.
