| Here are some little tips to make your life easier on the Internet. To copy text If you know Word, you probably already know this very useful little trick to copy and move a text or part of a text to another place (in the same page or message or in another file or even in a different program ). First seize the text with your mouse. Then click on Edit in the line at the top of your browser, then on Copy if you want to leave the text there or on Cut if you want the text to be deleted. Then go to the place where you want to copy the text, place the cursor there and click on Edit, then on Paste. Your text should appear there. You can also do this with your keyboard. Keep the CTRL key down (at the bottom left of your keyboard), then on the C key for Copy, on the X key for Cut and on the V key for Paste. Surfing the Internet To surf the Internet, you can start with an address you found somewhere and follow the links that they give you to go to other sites. You can keep the addresses of the websites you like so you don't have to write the whole address everytime. Click on Bookmarks at the top of your browser, then on Add to Bookmarks. To go to a site you have saved, click on Bookmarks to see all your bookmarks and click on the site you want to go to. You can also search to find websites on a certain subject that interests you in Search Engines like Altavista, Google, and in directories like Yahoo. You can also search the Geocities' directory for pages by Geocities members. To learn more about a subject and meet other people who share your interests, you can join mailing lists by Yahoogroups and other providers. Yahoogroups lets you see all the past messages in the archives. You can read them more easily if you click on Expand Messages at the bottom. You can choose not to receive e-mails, but read the messages at the website. E-mails You probably got an e-mail address from your Internet provider. It is possible to access this account from another computer than your own, but it's rather complicated. To have an e-mail address you can easily use on every computer you find, open an account at Hotmail.com or Yahoo.com. With these accounts, you will also be able to search for a message you sent or received before. When you sign up, it would be best to give a name that makes your identity clear, so people don't mistake your messages for spamming (unsollicited e-mails from people trying to sell things) and delete them. To send a message, click on Compose, then write the address of the recipient, the subject and the text of the message, then click on Send. You can also save the draft if you want to keep the message to add things to the message and send it later. When you send it, your message will go through cyberspace to your destinator. He will see it when he checks his mail. He may reply right away when he sees it or he may reply later. Sometimes he may forget to reply. Sometimes he may not want to reply or think it is not necessary. Some companies reply to all mail. Many of them do not, maybe because they are swamped with requests or they got tired to reply to the same questions over and over again. Before writing to a company, check to see if they a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). It may have the answer to your question. If you don't get a reply and you desperately need one, write again Since most people receive a lot of e-mails, it would be a good idea to write a very descriptive summary of what your message is about in the subject line of your message so they can know what you want simply by looking at all their messages. For example, you can write something like: "I need your report at 4 PM". The phrase can't be too long or it will get cut. If you want them to open your message, you can write something like: " please read this info before the meeting". When you download free stuff on the Internet or you sign up for e-mail accounts or other things, always uncheck the box for more info or newsletters if you don't want to receive tons of sales letters. Messengers and chats You can have instant written conversations by chatting. You go in a chatroom and you start writing to the people who happen to be there. They will reply right away. You will meet a lot of people. You may find some who share your interests. You can use the messengers (made by Yahoo, MSN, AOL) to have a two way instant written conversation with someone you know. They just need to have the same messenger as you. You can make an appointment with them or you can start a conversation with them when you see that they are online. You can have an instant audio (and video) conversation with someone using PalTalk. The messengers also tell you when you get a new e-mail. Yahoo Messenger tells you about new e-mails in a Yahoo account, MSN messenger in a Hotmail account, AOL messenger in AOL and Netscape mail. |
