Length of Presentation:
The presentation should be no longer than 30 minutes. At least five minutes should be allowed for questions from the rest of the class.
Preparation:
Each student shall be responsible for contributing AT LEAST the following about the assigned approach to language:
1. Three (3) seminal characteristics of this particular approach
to language.
2. Two (2) specific examples of how this approach manifests
itself in the classroom (from the text AND from experience).
3. At least two (2) strengths of the approach from the student's
perspective.
4. At least two (2) weaknesses of the approach from the student's
perspective.
Students will hand in a copy of their notes on these items. Fulfilling these minimum requirements will earn the student a B+
Presentation Format:
Option A: A Mock Debate
In this option, members of the group will stage a mock debate. After a short presentation to define and identify the seminal characteristics of the approach, the group will then divide into proponents and opponents. The proponents will begin by giving strengths of the approach; the opponents will then counter with the weaknesses. The proponents will then attempt to respond to the objections of the opponents. Both sides will then take questions.
Option B: A Professional Panel
In this option, members of the group will present a panel discussion. Each member should give a short presentation on the approach to language assigned to the group. Be certain that the approach is thoroughly described and defined. The panel as a unit will then take questions from the rest of the class.
Grading:
In order to earn an "A," the student must show an understanding of the approach, contribute valuable information on the approach, engage fully in the activity, and present no errors about the approach.
