When I was expecting my son, I began to research baby carriers. The Baby Bjorn had the most positive reviews, however it seemed rather expensive. There were cheaper versions of the Baby Bjorn, like the Snugli, but they were difficult to adjust to my frame and seemed uncomfortable with all the buckles and straps! Besides, I wanted a carrier that had a longer life than these style carriers--I did not want to have to purchase a new one in a few months when my son was larger. Since Evan turned out to be a large baby (he was over 20 pounds at 4 months), he would not have fit into the front-pack carriers. As he was not sitting up, he could not use the backpack-style carriers. Bigger babies run in my family and a cousin had told me not to waste my money on a front-pack carrier.
Slings were recommended by
the childbirth educator, but they seemed difficult to adjust and the ring
dug into my shoulder. I did like the idea of a carrier that could be thrown
into a diaper bag, but I wanted something that I could just throw on and
go. No adjustments necessary! After researching slings on the Internet,
I discovered pouch slings and decided to make my own out of an old sheet
(no money wasted if my harebrained idea didn't work!). After a few prototypes,
I came up with the design of the Hatchling Hammock. It was wonderful! From
the early months of my son's life, I could go grocery shopping, do chores,
etc. and keep my hands free. It also almost magically induced sleep--my
son never liked to sleep, even as a tiny infant, but he would fall asleep
within a few minutes if I put him in the Hammock and took a quick walk
around the house. I was able to take him to restaurants without the hassle
of an infant car seat carrier. I could also breastfeed in relative privacy.
Once, my husband and I were out with friends having breakfast and I fed
my son at the table. As we were leaving the restaurant, my husband asked
me if I wanted to find a place to feed Evan. He had been sitting right
across from me and never even knew I had been breastfeeding! Many mothers
begin to ask me where I got my sling and I decided to offer this design
for sale.
The Hatchling Hammock is a custom-fit baby sling and is similar in design to many other pouch slings (such as the Maya pouch and the New Native). There are no buckles or rings to adjust--the Hammock is custom-made for each person. It will fit your frame and distribute your baby's weight comfortably across the back. The Hatchling Hammock has no bulky padding; like a hammock, the baby lies suspended in comfort. Like other slings, it is very versatile and the baby can be worn cradled, facing in or out, and on the hip or back. The Hammock comes in two different lengths: a shorter length appropriate for a newborn or smaller infant and for hip-carrying a toddler or larger baby; and a longer length that allows you to cradle-hold a larger baby. I recommend starting with the shorter length--you may find that you will not need the longer one, unless you have a baby in the 95-100 percentile for height and weight (like I did).
Reversible Hammocks are made of 100% cotton: one side is a solid color and the other is a print. These are $25, plus $5.00 shipping. I also make a sari/brocade sling for $35.00 (the fabric is more expensive).
I include one small loop on the seat of the Hammock on which to hang toys.
I also include an instruction sheet on wearing the sling.
The hammock is folded with the flannel on the interior and the baby is placed into the seam.
The Cradle Hold
The "Baby in a Bag" Hold
An older infant (4+ mos) with
good neck control is seated "indian-style" in the hammock facing out.
Evan is a little big for this hold, but the picture gives the idea.
You should measure yourself across your back diagonally from the shoulder bone (the little bump on the top of your shoulder) to your hip bone (this will mean wrapping the tape slightly around to the front). The measuring tape should be loose, not tight. This is the only measurement I need. Please let me know if you want the longer or the shorter length.
You will then need to select
your fabric. Currently, I have only one premade sling available (it is in a purplish-pink butterfly brocade, think Petunia Picklebottom)--I usually make slings to order, so that I may ensure fit. I usually make either a reversible sling in a print and solid fabric, or a sling in a sari/brocade print (this one is not reversible). You may also send me your own fabric; please email for details.
