Autobiography Grading Guidelines

GRADE: C (Lower grades should be discussed with the instructor)

The paper has directly addressed the assignment, meets the length requirement, and fits the assigned format. Basic essay structure can be identified, but some elements may need some more work. For example, a thesis has been attempted, although the focus may not be consistent or sufficiently narrow.

The content of the essay addresses the major questions listed in the syllabus, but has not demonstrated developed reflection. For example, the essay may introduce critical issues, but may not develop them adequately, provide enough examples, or reflect on the significance of the narrative. The major points of the essay leave too many questions in the mind of the reader.

Editing has been cursory and many grammatical errors still persist. The flow of the essay is often interrupted ; cohesion and clarity are occasional problems.

GRADE: B

This essay contains all of the elements of the C essay, with the following exceptions and additions:

*All elements of basic structure have been mastered. The essay has a clear focus tying all three elements of the assignment together. There is a clear progression of thought from the past, through the present, and to the future.

*Examples are given for every point.

*The speculation demonstrates a clear knowledge and correct usage of terms used in class with few errors.

*Few questions remain in the mind of the reader.

*Editing has been thorough. Only two or three grammatical errors still persist.

*The essay is clear and flows well.

GRADE: A

This essay contains all of the elements of the B essay, with the following exceptions and additions:

*The thesis is exceptionally original and demonstrates careful thought and reflection.

*The essay demonstrates superior critical thinking skills and creatively develops each point.

*The speculation demonstrates a clear knowledge and correct usage of terms used in class with no errors.

*Editing has been complete. Only two or fewer errors remain.

*The writer has achieved his or her own voice, resulting in a superior original style.
