A Little About Me Hello. My name is 'Yemi 'Tayo 'Taiwo.I'm originally from Ibadan, Nigeria (born and raised). There I attended Subuola Memorial Nursery & Primary School (1975-1984) and then my secondary education at Bishop Phillips' Academy (1984-1989) and then finally to LAUTECH until '97 when I came to the United States. Here, I got my Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems at DeVry University, Chicago. Currently, I work as an IT consultant for a Consulting firm located downtown Chicago. I love to listen to Jazz, R&B, Rap and all of that.My best genre of music, though, is Reggae. Ya Man. Be it 'Roots Reggae' like "dem" Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff style or the more contemporary DanceHall Reggae [Beenie Man, Seun Paul type]. I'm all into it. I am also, of course, crazy about Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. I must admit, I wasn't quite a big fan of Fela when I was in "Naija". But he sort of grew on me and now I can proudly say, I'm a HUGE fan of "the Fela" When it comes to life, nostalgia is what does it for me. Being a Cancer, I truly hold on to great feelings of the past and anything that reminds me of past times. So do not be shocked if I told you that I still sing my heart out to the tune of "Pass The Dutchie" or that the "Man From Atlantis" is one of my favorite TV Shows - though I recently ordered the entire collection of it on the Internet and couldn't figure out why I loved it so much; and to think I almost drown a few times trying to copy the guy. Operation Daybreak, Sound of Music, Clash of the Titans, Sholay, 7th Voyage of Sinbad are some of my all time favorite old movies. |

Nigeria I Hail Thee When I think about the situation in Nigeria, I truly feel sad. The corruption, the armed robbery, the poverty rate, the God-forsaken roads, the unemployment rate, the value of the Naira, or perhaps I should stop there. It's been said often times that Nigeria has the potential of becoming a developed country, but how long are we going to sit there and hope that things get better? When are we going to stop talking about it and start doing something about it? We need to make changes, and these changes need to be spear-headed by the Nigerian government, not the United Nations, not the United States, not the IMF. For starters, stop depending solely on oil revenue to run an ecomony of over 120 million people. It makes you wonder how we survived before oil was discovered in its vastness in Nigeria. Check this out: Oil exploration is is quite expensive and tedious, but once oil is found it provides huge revenue for the government. However, there is little precedent that enormous government oil-based wealth trickles down and effect an improvement in sectors of education, health care, and diversifying the economy to create jobs that do not depend on the swings of the oil market. The Nigerian government needs to realize that precious resources alone - like oil, gold, diamonds or whatever - rarely raise nations from poverty to prosperity. Nations depending solely on natural resources usually become poorer, more corrupt, and prone to coups, wars, tyranny and general instability in the government, compared to countries that are less endowed with natural wealth. These also discourage foreign investments. The sooner we realize this and start developing other sources of revenue for Nigeria, the better it will be for us Nigerians. And in addition to creating more revenue for the government, more jobs opportunities will be created, and consequently there will be a reduction in the unemployment rate, which will reduce the crime rate, poverty rate. The trickle down effect will be great. The great economies of U.S, Britain, Japan, France, Germany, etc are not magical. They are based on this concept, and if you have noticed, none of these countries depend on natural wealth to run their great economies. They depend on their Human Resources. This is just my own opinion. Thank you for reading.
