Mary Virginia Nicklaus, 84, of Lincolnshire, Ill., formerly of Dubuque, died Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at Condell Medical Center, Libertyville, Ill., following a short illness. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, Dubuque, where friends may call after 1 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, is in charge of arrangements. She was born on Jan. 6, 1922, in Dubuque, daughter of Harry and Agnes (Egelhof) Splinter. Mary moved to Milwaukee, Wis., with her family in early childhood. Following graduation from Milwaukee schools, she entered Clarke College and graduated in 1943. In 1945, Mary married George Edward Nicklaus, a graduate of Loras College and a veteran of the Army Air Forces during World War II. She and her husband received masters degrees from Madison, Wisconsin. They moved to the Chicago area, where she worked briefly in social services. The two did extensive traveling following retirement. Surviving are a nephew, Robert (Bianca) Splinter, of California; three nieces, Mary (Eric) Schuberg, Jean (Scott Rochon) Splinter and Joan (Don Felton) Splinter, all of California; a sister-in-law, Eileen Splinter, of California; seven great-nieces and nephews, of California; 16 great-great-nieces and nephews, of California; and several cousins, many of Dubuque, and the surrounding areas.
