Mary E. Bliss 11/18/03 Funeral services for Mary E. Bliss,73, of 12784 Ivy Avenue, Greene, were held Thursday, October 30, 2003, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Flag Presentation conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene, Iowa. Reidıs Funeral Chapel of Greene in charge of arrangements. Mary Ellen d'Happart was born October 10, 1929, in Villisca, Montgomery County, Iowa, a daughter of Arthur d'Happart and Opal Pauline Sheppard d'Happart Bisterfelt, and died Monday, October 27, 2003, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton. She received her education at the College Hill High School in Cedar Falls. She entered the United States Air Force on August 16, 1949. While she was in the Air Force she was married to Arthur Barnes and to this union was born a daughter named Pamela Lee. Following her discharge on August 24, 1950, she returned home and worked at Rath Packing Plant as a secretary. She also worked at the telephone company in Kansas City. On March 10,1956, she was united in marriage to Bernard Nicklaus in Parkersburg. To this union were born Lynn Etta, Bernard Lawrence Jr. and Debra Sue. On June 19, 1981, she was married to Donald E. Bliss at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home ar 1261 East 18th Street in Des Moines, where she was employed by Kelly Services. They moved to their home in rural Greene in 1998. Mary enjoyed cooking, canning, crafts, bowling, gardening, polka dancing, and Blue Grass Festivals. Mary was a member of the Polka Club of Iowa and the Society for the Preservation of Blue Grass Music. She was baptized June 21, 1931, at the Methodist Church in Villisca. She was a faithful member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg where she taught Sunday School, and was active in her church circle and studied the Bethel Series. After moving to Greene Don and Mary were faithful members of St. Peter Lutheran Church. She will be sadly missed by her loving husband Donald E. Bliss of Greene; daughter: Pamela Lee (Dick) Kirkpatrick and their son Matthew of Waterloo; daughter: Lynn Etta (Steve) Gleason and their children: Trista and Kyle of Waterloo; son: Bernard Lawrence Nicklaus of Clear Lake and his children: Shawn, Rachael, Michael, and Justin of Shell Rock; daughter; Debra Sue (Fred) Taylor and their children: Jennifer, Melanie, Leslie, Crystal, Troy, Craig, Adam, and Eric, all of Thorton; stepson: Marvin (DeAnna) Bliss and their children, Jeremiah, John, and Chelsea of Janesville; seven great-grandchildren: Madison and Kelli Johnston; Tanner and Grace Shreckengost, Miranda and Tjaden Johnson, and Justin Vega; four brothers: Clarence "Bud" (Carol) d'Happart of Houston, TX, Larry (Pat) Bisterfelt of Jim Bean, TX, John Bisterfelt of Van Alstyne, TX; Floyd (Ann) Bisterfelt of Honolulu, Hl; two sisters: Shirley Mae (Dave) Smith of Ely, NV, and Laura Rose (Marlyn) Nicklaus of Parkersburg, and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving include special friends: Pete and Marilyn Peterson of Waterloo and Marvin Wente of Toledo. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her step father Lawrence Bisterfelt.
