Iowa City Press Citizen Monday Jan 26, 1981, front page. Services Tuesday for Nicklaus Lone Tree -- Gerard P. Nicklaus, superintendent of the Lone Tree Community School district the past four and a half years, died Saturday at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a two month illness. The 50-year-old Nicklaus was hired as superintendent in the fall of 1976 after serving in the same capacity in several other Iowa communities, including Melbourne, Diagonal, and Afton. He also was a teacher at Troy Mills, Shellrock and Wellsburg. Nicklaus was a 28-year veteran of education. Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the school, with the Rev. Thomas Mohr officiating. Tuesday morning classes have been canceled to allow for the funeral, and will resume after noon. He was a member of St. Mary's Church Catholic Church and served on the parish council. He was past-president of the Lone Tree Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Knights of Columbus and a former member of the Lions Club. He was a life member of the National Education Association and a member of the Iowa Association of School Administrators. Visitation has begun at Sorden's Chapel in Lone Tree. A rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. today at the chapel. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Parkersburg. Nicklaus was born July 19, 1930, in Parkersburg, a son of Peter B. and Agnes Heger Nicklaus. He married Helen Morrison Aug. 17, 1955, in Sigourney. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Mark and Dennis, both of Iowa City, and David of London, England; three daugh- ters, Joyce of Davenport and Donna and Brenda both at home; two brothers, Justine of New Hardford and Romaine of Perris, Calif.; and one sister, Georgia Rewerts of Parkersburg.
