Monday, March 12, 2007 1:06 PM CDT Frederick G. Nicklaus (1908-2007) PARKERSBURG --- Frederick G Nicklaus, 98, of Parkersburg, died at home Saturday, March 10. He was born Dec. 14, 1908, in Parkersburg, son of George and Elizabeth Tiedeken Nicklaus. He married Mary Rue Cooper on July 22, 1943, in Macon, Ga. Mr. Nicklaus was a veteran of World War II and had served as post master in Parkersburg for 30 years prior to retiring. Over the years he had various jobs, including running construction crews. managing a grain elevator, a pool, a hotel and a liquor store. Survivors include: his wife; two daughters, Rue Ann (Scott) Furbish of Clearwater, Fla., and Mary (Ronald) Zitzlsperger of Decatur, Ill.; two sons, James (Joyce) of Des Moines and Robert (Antonietta) of St. Charles, Ill.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Frances Richman of Waterloo. Preceded in death by: a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Nicklaus; two brothers, Peter B. and George Edward; and four sisters, Anna Nicklaus, Margaret Hoffman, Marie Scallon and Elizabeth Heger. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Parkersburg, with burial in the church cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 285. He married Mary Rue Cooper July 22, 1943 in Macon Georgia. Known in Parkersburg as Postmaster, a position he held for 30 years prior to retiring, Fred was no stranger to the community. Fred was a life-long resident of the community, with the exception of the years served in WWII and several years of travel running a construction company's crews. Fred was a member of the Rotary Club and a 60 year member of the American Legion. In addition to Postmaster, he served the community in several jobs including managing a grain elevator and a pool running a hotel, and a liquor store. Fred was an active member and significant contributor in a multitude of ways to St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parkersburg. He was a parish council member and caretaker of the parish cemetery. Fred will be remembered as a faithful and loving husband, a devoted father, a faithful Christian, a devout Catholic, and an outstanding role model. His hobbies included reading and travel. He and Rue traveled the world several times over. As the years passed by, you could find Fred and Rue on their front porch more and more. Many a family concern or world problem was solved on the porch. He is survived by his wife Mary Rue Nicklaus, their four children: Rue Ann and Scott Furbish of Clearwater, FL, Mary and Ronald Zitzlsperger of Decatur, IL, James and Joyce Nicklaus of Des Moines, IA, and Robert and Antonietta Nicklaus of St Charles, IL, their five grandchildren, Richard Nicklaus, Kevin Furbish, Rebecca Godwin, Megan Nicklaus, and Patrick Nicklaus, and five great-grandchildren, Jordan Nicklaus, Charlie Nicklaus, Dylan Godwin, Madisyn Godwin, and Alysia Furbish, and his sister Frances Richman of Waterloo, Iowa. Mrs. Nicklaus began her teaching career in Port Byron, Ill., and in 1956 began a career in special education as a teacher in Fern. She continued her career as the director of special education for Grundy County, then concluded her education career as curriculum director at River Hills School, Cedar Falls. Survivors include: two daughters, Rue Ann (Scott) Furbish of Clearwater, Fla., and Mary (Ron) Zitzlsperger of Decatur, Ill.; two sons, Jim (Joyce) of Des Moines and Robert (Antonietta) of St. Charles, Ill.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Tuesday, July 3, 2007 Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier Mary Rue Nicklaus Mary Rue Nicklaus, 88, of Parkersburg, Iowa, died peacefully in her home on Saturday, July 1, 2007. Rue, as she was known, was born March 9, 1919 in Rochelle, Illinois to Howard and Bessie Cooper. On July 22, 1943 she married Frederick G. Nicklaus in Macon, Georgia. Rue was a life-long learner and educator. She began her teaching career in Port Byron, Illinois, where she met Fred. In 1956 Rue began a career in Special Education as a teacher in Fern, Iowa. She continued her career as the Director of Special Education for Grundy County, then concluded her education career as Curriculum Director at River Hills School in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Her insight into the individual needs of students along with her innovative ideas to motivate both teachers and students increased the effectiveness of the curriculums she directed. Rue was an avid reader and enjoyed sewing and knitting. She enjoyed sharing her crafting skills with neighborhood adults and children. Rue was the founder of the Dandy Dozen 4-H Club in Parkersburg which continues to enrich the lives of its members. Rue was also a very active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parkersburg. She served on the Finance and Planning Committee for the new church, taught CCD, served on the Ladies Altar and Rosary Society, helped with church dinners, and donated many of her handmade quilts for church raffles. Rue and her husband Fred were enthusiastic travelers. In addition to traveling the United States extensively, they traveled the world. In their travels, they enjoyed learning the cultures of the countries, and mostly they enjoyed the people they met on their travels. Rue was preceded in death by her husband Frederick, her parents Howard and Bessie Cooper, her brother Howard Cooper, her sister Lorraine Peterson, and her daughter-in-law Bonnie Nicklaus. She is survived by her children: Rue Ann and Scott Furbish of Clearwater, FL, Mary and Ron Zitzlsperger of Decatur, IL, Jim and Joyce Nicklaus of Des Moines IA, and Robert and Antonietta Nicklaus of St. Charles, IL, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
