Nicklaus Ernest Ray Nicklaus, age 92, of Parkersburg was born the son of Joseph and Anna (Ostendorf) Nicklaus on August 9, 1911, in Parkersburg, Iowa. He received his education and graduated from the Parkersburg High School in 1929. Ernie made his home in Parkersburg. He worked for his brother Ralph at Nicklaus Meat Market as a meat cutter. His specialty was making bologna. He continued cutting meat when the business changed owners and retired in 1968 from Palmers Grocery Store. Ernie attended the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg. In his spare time he enjoyed gardening and going golfing. Every chance Ernie got, he loved to attended all sporting events and often he would travel to professional games. Ernie died Thursday, January 15, 2004, at the Maple Manor Care Center, Aplington, Iowa from natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Joe, Ralph and Harm Nicklaus. Ernie is survived by one niece, Darlene (Don) Truax of Parkersburg and her children, Rick and Suzanne Nicklaus of Irvin, California and their sons, Alex and Jonathan, Steve and Pat Nicklaus of Winterset, Iowa and their daughter, Becki and Teresa and Mike Whitcome of Mantorville, Minnesota and their daughter, Autumn. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 17, 2004, at the First Congregational Church, Parkersburg, Iowa, with Rev. Ron Bartlett officiating. Organist was Mary Ann Simon. Vocalist Tom Teeple sand "How Great Thou Art." Congregational Hymns were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In The Garden." Casketbearers were Don Cashett, Rick Cashett, Tim Cashett, Mitch Cashett, Coleen Mennen and Jessie Mennen. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
