Marley Knock Dead At 80 Apr 19 2000 12:00AM On June 15, 1940, Markley was united in marriage with Carolyn Nicklaus at the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg. They made their home on a farm near Parkersburg where he farmed until 1952. For a few years he worked with his father at the Parkersburg Lumber. In 1955, he started and operated the Parkersburg Ready Mix. Markley opened Knock's Sand and Gravel northwest of Clarksville in 1962. In 1968, he founded Knock's Building Supply that he owned and operated. While in business he also drove semi truck for Warren Transport in Waterloo from 1977 until 1991. He continued to operate Knock's Building Supply, until his recent hospitalization. Markley was a member of the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg. He always loved spending time with his family and he enjoyed hunting and fishing in Canada with his boys. Markley died at 5:45 a.m., Thursday, April 13, 2000, in the St. Mary Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota from an aortic aneurysm. He was preceded in death by his infant granddaughter, Sydney Hannah Knock; his parents, Andy and Elizabeth Knock; two brothers, Henry and Wallace Knock, and one sister, Esther Langfritz. Markley is survived by: his wife, Carolyn Knock of Parkersburg; five sons: David Knock and his wife, Joyce of Des Moines; Kenneth Knock and his wife, Ranae of Parkersburg; Michael Knock of Allison, Russell Knock and his wife, Joan of Waverly and Don Knock and his wife, Cindy of Cedar Rapids; twelve grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two sisters, Lois Adelmund and his husband, Marvin of Parkersburg and Bonnie Toillion and her husband, Roger of Eagle Grove; one brother, Richard Knock of Cedar falls; and one brother-in-law, Delbert Nicklaus and his wife, Karen of Geneseo, Illinois. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, April 17, 2000, at the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg with Rev. Ken Carr officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mary Ann Simon accompanying the duet of Roma Ries and Stan Thompson singing 'In The Garden' and soloists, Roma Ries singing 'One Day At A Time' and Stan Thompson singing 'On Eagles Wings', also the congregational hymn of 'The Old Rugged Cross'. Honorary casketbearers were Henry Freeseman, Charles Allison, Arnold Wagner, Thomas Chandler, Calvin Spree and Ed Rewerts. Casketbearers were Bob Peters, Mel Bohlen, Ray Nitcher, Vinton Christopherson, Don Johnson and Merle Uhlenhopp. The flower committee was Jan Thomas, Darlene Nicklaus, Jean Schwerdtfeger, Aggie Card, and Marjorie Sloan. Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg with Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg in charge of arrangements. Butler County Tribune-Journal 2001 --------------------------------- Carolyn Mauline Knock Carolyn Mauline Knock, age 83, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born March 6, 1921, the daughter of August and Tillie Fleshner Nicklaus north of Parkersburg, Iowa. She was baptized in the First Congregational Church at the age of six months. She graduated from Parkersburg High School and attended Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls. Carolyn was united in marriage with Markley Knock on June 15, 1940, in the Congregational Church, Parkersburg, Iowa. After their marriage, the couple farmed, then in 1955, they started a redimix company, known as Parkersburg Ready Mix. They opened Knock’s Sand and Gravel northwest of Clarksville in 1962. In 1968, they started Knock’s Building Supply which they operated until Markley became ill. Carolyn kept the books for the business for many years. Carolyn was a life-long member of the First Congregational Church where she had taught Sunday School. In the past she very much enjoyed singing in the church choir. She belonged to the Ladies’ Guild at the church. Carolyn died Monday, November 22, 2004, at home in Parkersburg of complications of cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Markley on April 13, 2000; a grandchild, Sydney Knock; and one brother, Paul Nicklaus. She is survived by five sons, David (Joyce) Knock of Des Moines, IA; Kenneth (Ranae) Knock of Parkersburg, IA; Michael Knock of Allison, IA; Russell (Joan) Knock of Cedar Falls, IA and Don (Cindy) Knock of Ames, IA; fourteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one brother, Delbert (Karen) Nicklaus of Iowa City, IA. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg, Iowa with Pastor Paul Shaedig officiating. Organist was Mary Ann Simon. Tom Teeple sang "How Great Thou Art." Stan Thompson and Roma Ries sang "In The Garden" and "Whispering Hope." Roma Ries sang "One Day At A Time" Stan Thompson sang "Lord’s Prayer." The congregational hymn was "The Old Rugged Cross." Honorary Casketbearers were Kyle Knock, Scot Knock, Beau Knock, Jordan Knock, Jeremy Knock and Klint Knock. Casketbearers were Jerry Junker, Dennis Aswegan, Bryon Aswegan, Tor Nicklaus, Ray Nitcher and Mel Bohlen. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa.
