The accident happened in front of the Vern Ketchum home, 1000 7th Ave NW, north of Loon Lake. Workmen said 4,160 volts of electricity passed through his body. According to Alfred Fell, 610 SW 45h, who with Milton Krampitz, 312 2nd Ave NE, and Roy Clayton, 525 8th Ave SE, was working with Smith, said the victim apparently fell over into a hot wire. His neck hit the wire and his foot hit a secondary wire, Fell said. Smith was burned severely on the neck and foot. 'He made no sound at all', Fell said. 'I was started down a pole to the north of the one one he was on. We had been cutting down an old wire. He had been working on his pole when I heard Krampitz holler. I looked over and saw only a ball of fire'. Fell said shortly after the accident. 'I believe he died instantly. I came down and ran as fast as I could and got rubber gloves and then went up the pole south of his and cut the hot wire. Clayton was already up the pole and had a rope around him. We couldn't get his (climbing) hooks out and had to wait until the fire department came. We were trying but we couldn't get him down,' Fell said.
