Liebe Anna und Kinder

Deinen Brief haben wir den 16 April in Gesundheit empfangen und daus
geshen, dass Du und Friedrich auch krank gewesen seid, was uns leid tut, und
gesehen, dass Ihr eine kleine Tochter, 19 jannwa bekommen habt, was uns
freut, aber nun Liebe Anna, jetzt lesten wir weiter da sahen wir, dass Dein
liebe Mann am 26ten M"arz gestorben sei, was uns in teifsten Trauer
versetzte.
Nun Liebe Anna, wollen wir den lieben Gott beten, dass er Dir und Kinder
st"arke dass es Euch gut gehen mag. Nun Anna bette und arbeite fleissig, dan
wird der liebe Gott auch Euch st"arken und helfen. Anna, wie ist es mit
Berta und Friedrich. Sind sie auch schon angenommen. Schreibe es uns doch,
wie es damit ist. Neuheit sind hier nicht vorgekommen, als dass der Kaufmann
Kiesselhbt auch todt ist, und nun ist sie bankrot,
die Contesse Clatil Frau Landrosin ist auch todt.

Liebe Anna und Kinder, es tut mir herzlich leid, dass Dein lieber Mann
gestorben ist, und dass Friedrich auch so oft krank ist. Ich bin diesen
Winter auch sehr krank gewesen. Ich hatte 4 Tage eine starke erbreggen, tag
und nachts und konnte nichts inhalten. Da haben sie den Doctor geholt, und
was war es es ein schlimmer Brug, den die Entz"undung war schon da. nun
trage ich ein brugband, dass ist aber schwer schreiben und doch wie deine
kleine Tochter heisst und wie es euch noch geht. Und schreibe wie er mit ihr
von Parkersburg ist in Applinkton seid, da auch eine katholische Kirche, und
wie weit seid ihr davon entfernt. Aber der Vikar der hat sehr Bedenken "uber
Deine Kinder, ob sie die Reglion auch wohl lernen, die so notwendig ist.
Wievielle sind angenommen. Pastor W"atterloh ist nicht mehr bei uns. wir
haben jetzt einen frommen Pastor ???. ich entschuldige mein schlechtes
Schreiben.

Dear Anna and children,

We received your letter on the 16th of April in good health and we are
sorry to hear that you and Friedrich have also been ill. We are very
happy to hear that you had a little daughter on January 19. With the
deepest sorrow we read about your husband passing away March 26, dear
Anna.  We pray to our dear Lord that he gives you and the children the
strength and good health to carry on. Anna, what is happening to
Bertha and Friedrich? Have they already been confirmed? Please write.
Nothing of interest has occurred here, except that the merchant
Kiesselhut also passed away, and now the Countess Clatil is bankrupt.
Mrs. Landrosin also died.

My dearest Anna, dear children, I am so very sorry that your dear
husband has passed away and that Friedrich is ill so often. During the
winter months I have also been very ill. For four days I was nauseous
and vomited repeatedly, day and night and I could not keep any food
down. That is when they asked the doctor to see to me. He found that I
had a severe hernia and it was already inflamed. Now I am wearing a
hernial which makes my life very difficult. Please write and let us
know the name of your little daughter and how you are. And please also
write how is he with her of von Parkersburg ?? in Applinkton, where
there is also a catholic church, and how close it is to you. The vicar
has reservations about your children, mainly whether they are
being taught the essentials in religious studies. How many have been
confirmed? Pastor W"atterloh has left us. We now have a very
religious pastor ???. Please excuse my bad handwriting.

The above was an old handwritten letter sent to Anna (Brueggemann)
Tiedeken.  It was passed down through her daughter Elizabeth, then
through Elizabeth's son Peter B. Nicklaus, then through his son Gerard
Nicklaus, and currently (1995) to Gerard's son, Dennis Nicklaus.
Dennis had it translated with the help of several people in 1995.
The original is written in the old german script.  In the german text,
umlauted characters (i.e. a, o, or u with two dots above them) are
typed here as the two character sequence, "a, "o, "u.
Loga is the name of a town in northwest Germany adjacent to Leer.
