4 Wheeling in Moab
The Fins 'n' Things Trail
I managed a break from Mountain Biking and did a 4 wheeling trail in my Range Rover.
Fins 'n' Things is a challenging 4 wheel drive trail in the county park (entry fee required) which traverses steep slickrock climbs and decents and sandy desert terrain. 4 wheel drive, high clearance and off roading experience is recommended.
The backdrop for the area is the La Sal mountains.
The trail quickly climbed up onto slickrock outcroppings.
We scrambled along the drop...
And then down the side. The trail is marked by white paint teradactyls, and the tire rubber of other trail riders.
You cannot see the bottom of this steep decent. I walked forward to inspect it before driving down it, to make sure I could handle the departure angle at the bottom.
Then the trail turned right back onto the slickrock.
Another steep downhill.
Back up on the rock - the truck sitting high and proud! (OK, I couldn't resist!)
Another extremely steep downhill. It seemed so steep that the truck would roll over forward, but with the high friction of the slickrock, I found I could hold the truck motionless with the brakes on the steepest section. This one was so steep, I had to turn the wheel at the bottom to get the truck to leave the rock on an angle to avoid dragging the tow hitch.
Back up again, we went to the right, but some trucks managed to climb the steeper section to the left. And some just left marks!
Another steep downhill step.
The toughest climb because the surface was rougher and sandier than earlier slickrock. A little momentum carried us up.
Campsites were sprinkled thru this section of the trail.
The last climb of the trail back to Sand Flats Road.
Our campsite across from Slickrock parking lot. What a great place to camp!
