Chapter 23:

Brian snuck a glace over at Nick and fought not to let the laughter he felt trying to make its way out. Before anyone could look at Nick and follows the blondes’ line of sight he gently nudged Nick in the ribs with his elbow so Nick wouldn’t look like an idiot.

“Huh?” Nick questioned dumbfounded as he tore his eyes away from the back of Justin’s head to look at Brian.

Brian chuckled. “You’re far gone,” he said shaking his head. “Loser!”

Nick blushed and bit on his lower lip as he snuck another glance down at Justin who still hadn’t noticed him. Taking a deep he looked over at Lynne who was watching him intently but with a knowing smile on her face and Nick couldn’t help but wonder if she read minds, especially his.

“Hey,” Brian greeted and patted Justin’s back, at least he thought that was Justin. He snuck a glance over at Josh who was standing right next to him. He took in a deep breath and willed himself to not react or do something stupid. Josh was wearing a gray dinner jacket with gray slacks and a white t-shirt underneath. He looked absolutely gorgeous especially with his hair a bit longer and wavy. Brian focused his attention back down to Justin and smirked. “Justin, man,” he said. “Awesome hair.”

Justin had pretty much blocked out all the conversations the mothers were having around him. He had opted to just sit put and remain silent. But when the tingly feeling in the pit of his stomach arose he knew that it was time to start paying attention and not look like an idiot. Taking in a deep breath he smiled and looked over at Jane who at the same moment looked at him and winked. That very second Justin heard Brian’s voice coming from somewhere above his head and he gulped. The greeting was soon followed by a pat on the back and a compliment on his hair. If Brian was right here behind him then that meant that Nick was some where near, some where close by. He looked up at his mother and saw her looking at someone with a sweet smile and a look of wonder on her face. Quickly he turned around in his seat and looked up at Brian. “Thanks,” he said and cleared his throat when it sounded too high. “You’re looking sharp.” He licked his lips and felt his heart beat quicken as he finally saw Nick looking at him with a smile on his face.

“Hey Justin,” Nick greeted and before he could anything more he felt someone’s arm around his shoulder and then Scott’s face popping in between him and Brian.

“Sorry to break this rendez-vous folks,” Scott said looking truly apologetic. “But WE really need to be seated for this thing to start.”

“Do you mind if we join you?” Karen, Josh’s mom spoke to Lynne, Jane, and Jackie.

Lynne looked up quickly and smiled. “Not at all,” she said and indicated that they all can join them since there was more than enough room at the table.

Jane smiled politely at all of them and looked over at her son who sadly shook his head. “I’m sorry,” she said. “There’s already a table assigned for us over there.”

“Yeah,” Jackie piped up. “But we’ll come back and pick up where we left off, though.”

“If we let ya,” Brian said giving his mom his arm so she could hook her arm with his.

Nick chuckled and did the same with his mom. “Our table awaits us, mother.” But before they could turn around and leave he shot a quick look at Justin’s sad face and gave a discreet wink and smiled when Justin smiled.

Both Jackie and Jane rolled their eyes before chuckling and calling out their ‘see you’s’ before following their sons to the student council table set up by the podium.

Nick sighed as he took the seat between his mother and Brian, Jackie on the other side of Brian. Scott, his mom, Marshall, and his mother were seated across from them. He looked over to the podium when Brother Joseph began his speech. A few minutes later he and the other student council members stood and smiled when they were introduced as the ones that planned that night's event. During the little monologue Nick's attention and eyes kept diverting over to where Justin was seated. He really wanted to go over there and talk to him that's if he could get a proper word that's actually in the dictionary without sounding like a stuttering, blabbering idiot.

After the appetizers were served and the conversations amongst the parents and their kids quieted down a bit was when one by one the sons had gotten up and asked their mothers for a dance.

* * * * * * * * * *

"So, Charlie," Jane said with a smile on her face as she brought her hands up and rested them on her sons shoulder.

"Yes, mom," Nick said raising his eye brow wondering what that look his mother was giving him was all about.

Jane shrugged and started moving to the song. "Justin's looking quite handsome tonight, isn't he?" She questioned keeping a close eye on Nick's reaction.

Nick opened his mouth to respond and then quickly bit his lower lip to keep from saying what he wanted to say. He then narrowed his eyes and looked closely at his mother trying to figure out just what she meant by that. A few seconds later his eyes widened and his mouth dropped open in shock. "You know?"

Jane couldn't help but smile and wiggles her eye brows. "Honey," she cooed. "I'm you mother, you think I wouldn't notice something like this?"

"I... but... I," Nick said trying to get sentences out but failing miserably.

"Shhh," Jane said. "It's okay, sweety."

Nick looked over to where Justin and Lynne were dancing. Justin looked so good and Nick really wanted to go over there and ask for a dance but that wouldn't go too well. Justin was wearing a white jacket and white slacks with a black t-shirt underneath. He had diamond studs in both ears and his hair, oh god his hair, it was cut short, bleached to platinum blonde, and spiked up in disarray. Justin in white and bleach blonde spiked up hair is a very sinful and hormone stimulating thing. Nick quickly shook his head and looked back at his mother who was trying hard to hold her laughter in.

"It's not that funny," Nick said, pouting.

"Oh yes it is," Jane said, chuckling. "Honey, you should see the look on your face when you look at him."

Nick looked up at his mother and wondered just what were in those appetizers to make her act this way and maybe if he could get the recipe. "You're really okay with me..."

"Nickolas," Jane said bringing her hands to cup Nick's face and held it in place so that Nick had no choice but to look into her eyes. "I love you no matter what. You're my son. My baby and you will always be my baby. I will stand behind you, beside you... whatever you want... as long as you need me and even when you don't. I just want you to be happy and if," she paused to look over at Justin before looking back at Nick with a smile. "He makes you happy then who am I to say no to that?"

Nick felt tears well up in his eye as he took in a deep breath. "I love you mom," he said and pulling his mom into a tight hug. "You're the best."

Jane chuckled, she just absolutely loved hearing those words. "So, just when were you planning on telling me about all this anyways?" She questioned once they pulled back and started dancing again.

"Um..." Nick trailed off as he blushed. "I don't know."

Jane rolled her eyes and shook her head. She then thought about something. "Does Justin know about... you know, her?" She questioned.

Nick was confused for a minute and then realization dawned on him. "He knows that I dated her and that now we're not together anymore," he said. "But he doesn't know just why and what happened."

Jane nodded her head. "Okay," she said. "You know we should invite them over for Christmas and both you and him could dance together without anyone judging you."

Nick's head shot up and he looked at his mom with wide eyes. "Really?" He questioned.

Jane simply nodded her head.

"You would do that?" Nick questioned. "Wait, what does dad say about this? Does he know?"

Jane smiled softly at him. "Your dad feels the same way as I do," she said. "We both want you to be happy, son. You're a good kid, a great son, an amazing student, and the best big brother in the world. It's more than we could have asked for."

Nick couldn't help but feel like he's been blessed with an amazing family and god only knew how much he loved them. "Thank you," he said, knowing that was unnecessary but still, the need to say it was there.

Just then someone bumped into him and Nick apologized without looking back to see just who it was until that person bumped into his again. "What the..."

* * * * * * * * * *

"You know Justin," Lynne said in a thought manner. "It looks like you were trying to copy Nick's hair style except..."

Justin rolled his eyes. "Except for what?"

"Except it looks better on him that it does on you," Lynne finished, laughing.

Justin's smile fell and he looked at his mom with a bored expression on his face. "Oh you should definitely try about for that show 'Funniest mom's in the US,'" he said sarcastically.

Lynne continued to chuckle. "I'm serious. Think about it," she paused. "He usually has his hair spiked and you have yours down but today you have it spiked and he had it down."

"I didn't know he was going to wear his hair down," Justin defended himself. "It was a freak chance that it happened this way."

"Uh huh," Lynne said incredulously. "Sure."

"Mama," Justin began to whine.

"Oh don't whine honey," Lynne said shaking her head at her son. "It's not manly."

Justin immediately shut his mouth and then looked rather sad. "Oh fine." He then took that moment to look over at Nick and smiled as he watching Nick and his mom hug each other. He was happy to see that Nick was as close to his mom and Justin was to his. Just then something struck him.

"Mama," Justin said in a panic. "What if Jane doesn't like me with him? I mean I know they're open minded about this gay stuff but what if they don't want Nick with a guy or what Nick to be-"

"Oh hush," Lynne said placing her finger over Justin's mouth to keep him quiet. "Don't you think that if Jane and Bob didn't want Nick to be with around homosexuals that they would let him hang around you?"

Justin took in a deep breath and nodded his head. "You're right," he said and pulled his mom close again and went back to watching Nick and his mom. He smiled to himself when Nick smiled at his mom. They looked like the perfect mom-son kodak picture. They even matched, top that Hallmark! Jane was wearing a beautiful long navy blue dress that had a square neck line and hung a bit low on the back but not too low, just right. She had a shall draped over her shoulders and there were pretty black designs starting with a mass of it on the bottom and dispersing as it got to the top of the dress. Nick was wearing a navy blue dinner jacket and slacks, a button down black shirt that was left unbuttoned revealing a tight chest hugging black shirt. His hair was combed down and he had on these thin silver rimmed glasses. Justin sighed and rested his head on his mother's shoulder.

Before Justin knew it he had bumped into someone and before he apologize the guy had already apologized. Smirking he bumped his hip into him again and this caused the other man to finally look over and Justin laughed at Nick's expression.

Jane smiled at Lynne as Lynne smiled at Jane before they looked at their sons and then at each others sons. As if reading each others' minds they swapped sons who didn't seem to notice the little switch-a-roo until they noticed that his mother hand her arms around the other mans neck and not his own.

"What the..." Justin said looking in front of him to see Jane in his arms chuckling at him.

Jane shrugged.

"When did this..." Nick said as he too looked in front of him and saw Lynne in his arms.

Lynne shrugged.

Justin and Nick looked at each other before shrugging and dancing the others' mother.

"So Nick," Lynne began with a soft smile on your face. "How are things with you?"

Nick smiled as he nodded his head. "Things are good, busy, but good," he answered.

"You have any plans for Thanksgiving night?" Lynne questioned wondering if both their families could together and have a big dinner someplace.

"Yeah," Nick said. "We actually do. Tomorrow we're driving upstate to spend the time off with my grandparents."

"Oh, I see," Lynne said a bit sadly.

There were a few minutes of awkward silence that Nick did not know how to fill.

"Nick," Lynne said. "You mind if I ask you something personal?"

Nick shook his head. "No, not at all."

Lynne took a deep breath and prayed to god her son wouldn't get angry with her and hoped that she wasn't crossing any boundaries. "You don't have to answer if you didn't want to but I was just curious," she said. "Um, just exactly how do you feel about my son?"

Nick was a bit taken back by the question but quickly recovered from the shock. "I like him," Nick said. "A little more than I should and I'm falling for him too fast and too quick..."

"A little more than you should?" Lynne questioned. "What do you mean by that?"

Nick licked his lips and thought about just what he meant by that. "I just got out of this relationship with this person that I thought I was in love with and it didn't end on good terms," he said. "But here I am, not even thinking about her and what happened... only Justin and what could."

"Well, do you know if you're maybe bi or ... gay?" Lynne questioned.

Nick took in a deep breath and shook his head sadly. "I don't know anything about that," he said. "I do know that I'm not gay... but I don't like guys either... at least until Justin came along." He paused. "I'm really trying to figure out just what I want and just what's happening with me before I hurt anyone, mainly Justin."

Lynne nodded her head, a little happy to see that Nick was really giving things some serious thought and not just jumping into things because of his hormones. "I'm glad your taking the time to think things through Nick," she said. "It shows to me that you really care about my son and if it's any consolation... I'm happy that Justin likes you and if things work or don't work out with the two of you... I won't think any less of you."

Nick smiled. "Thank you," he said, not really sure just how to respond to something like that. All this was just too surreal for him at the moment.
