About DNA Rabbitry
DNA Rabbitry was started by me, Alexandra Hutchinson. I began raising rabbits in 1999 with one Holland Lop that, after I had it tattooed, kept attacking me. So I was off to a great start with Holland Lops. I took that rabbit back to the breeders and they gave me my second Holland Lop, MNM's Mischeif. He can be seen on my Holland Lop bucks page. He was such a sweety and made me really interested in the Holland Lops. When he was older I went back to the breeders and bought two does. A Chestnut Agouti, Emma and a Blue Cream, Violet. When they were old enough I bred them with different degrees of success.
I also acquired a Mini Rex that I named Bigwig from the book Watership Down by Richard Adams. He was also very sweet. I was then up to four rabbits.
Two winters later Emma died and about 5 months after that I sold Violet because she had gotten so big that she couldn't have babies anymore. I then bought Checkers who has been my best brood doe and has never let any of her babies die. I bred her to Mischeif which produced a litter of Holland Lops and one of the babies was DNA's Nequila which can be seen on my Holland Lop does page. I continued to add more rabbits to my ever increasing herd and show them, winning many ribbons.
In March of 2001 I bought my first English Lop, Phatfurr's Macintosh. I showed him in the spring and won many awards with him and just about every judge that met him, loved him. To finish his first show season he went to the Royal Agricultural Fair in Toronto, Ontario and won Best of Breed. Well Done Mac :) Later around Christmas of 2002 I bought my second English Lop, Twig's Skye.
In 2005 I went off to university so I had to sell all my rabbits except for Snickers. Now in 2006 and my second year of university I am back in rabbits and have continued breeding, selling,, acquiring and showing my Holland lops to get my rabbits ever closer to what seems like an unattainable goal...perfection!
The main thing that got me started with rabbits was 4-H. Durham East 4-H, to be exact. I joined many clubs including: Rabbit, Poultry, and Horse. In Rabbit we learned lots of things about proper nutrition and such. I learned a lot, and if your the right age, I'd suggest that you try and join a 4-H near you. In Rabbit Club the leader suggested that we (the members) get a rabbit and so then....
