DMX RELEASED ON APPEAL Rapper DMX was released from jail on appeal late Wednesday after his arrest that same day for driving without a license and marijuana possession charges.
As we previously reported, the rapper was jailed on an outstanding warrant that had been issued after he missed a March 23 court date. On that date, DMX (real name Earl Simmons) was to have faced various charges stemming from a May 3 arrest Cheektowaga, New York for driving with a suspended license and marijuana possession..
DMX turned himself in to Cheektowaga police on Wednesday morning on the warrant, and when processing the rapper, police claim they found pot on him yet again. Police then tacked another marijuana possession charge to DMX's list of legal woes and sentenced the rapper to 15 days in prison with no bail.
The rapper's lawyers are appealing the case, calling the sentence "excessive," and won DMX's release pending that appeal on Wednesday afternoon.
Asked about the fact that DMX turned himself in to police on Wednesday while holding marijuana, the rapper's lawyers called the turn of events "embarrassing."

DMX ARRESTED ON WARRENT/DRUG CHARGE DMX is on his way to an upstate New York jail after turning himself in to Cheektowaga police Wednesday morning on an outstanding arrest warrant.
The situation soon became more complicated, as police say they found marijuana on the rapper while he was being processed Wednesday.
A New York State warrant had been issued for the rapper's arrest after he skipped a March 23 court date stemming from his March 3 arrest in Cheektowaga, New York for driving with a suspended license and marijuana possession.
DMX (real name Earl Simmons) pled guilty to all charges on Wednesday and was immediately sentenced to 15 days in prison with no bail. The rapper was also fined $100 for marijuana possession, $200 for not having a driver's license, and $50 on parking tags.
However, when DMX was being processed in his transfer to a Buffalo, New York holding cell, authorities claim that they found marijuana in a pack of cigarettes on the rapper. DMX was then re-arrested and charged yet again with a second marijuana possession charge and fined an additional $250.
At press time, an appeal had been filed, and DMX's lawyers were attempting to get a stay of sentence granted for the rapper, meaning DMX would not have to serve time and his case would go on appeal. If a stay is not granted, DMX will have to serve two-thirds of his 15-day sentence at the Erie County Correctional Facility in New York.
DMX had missed his first court date because he was in Texas with the Ruff Ryders/Cash Money tour

VIOLENCE ERUPTS AT RUFF RYDERS/CASH MONEY SHOW Boston police are still trying to determine what caused a fight to break out backstage at the Ruff Ryders/Cash Money show at Boston's FleetCenter Monday night.
Boston police told MTV News a fight broke out before 10 p.m. in a restricted backstage area where several artists and VIP guests were milling about. Six victims, whose names have yet to be released, were taken to New England Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Boston Medical Center. One of the victims was struck by a marble bench, while five others suffered stab wounds. As of press time on Tuesday, two of the victims remained in stable condition.
Although he did not witness the stabbings, a video director who was accompanying the tour told the "Boston Globe" that a local group called Made Men had clashed with one or more of the groups on the outing.
Police confirmed that there were two arrests at the venue Monday night. One of those arrests was directly related to the fight (for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon -- a marble bench) and one may or may not have been directly tied to the backstage fracas (possession of marijuana).
Fifty unnamed people were detained for questioning following the incident, which prevented The LOX and headliner DMX from taking the stage at all. According to an Associated Press report, the 5,000 or so concertgoers at the FleetCenter were unaware of the backstage melee.
The Ruff Ryders/Cash Money stop Tuesday night in Philadelphia has been postponed, although Ruff Ryders representatives say the rest of the tour remains on schedule. The next date is slated for April 6 at Tampa's Sundome.

ARREST WARRENT? DMX is in trouble with traffic court again. A warrant for the arrest of the rapper (real name Earl Simmons) will be issued in the next few days by New York State's Cheektowaga Justice Court after the hard-driving rapper failed to show up in traffic court on Wednesday morning.
As I previously reported, DMX was arrested on March 3 on several charges, including driving with a suspended license, speeding, and carrying a small amount of marijuana (see "DMX Arrested On Driving, Drug Possession Charges below").
A Cheektowaga clerk told MTV News on Wednesday that DMX's lawyers informed them that the rapper was in Texas, performing Wednesday night in Houston on the Ruff Ryders/Cash Money tour.
DMX will have to now formally turn himself in to police before the case can proceed, but because DMX only faces misdemeanor charges, it's unlikely he'll be extradited from another state.

DMX ARRESTED? Rapper DMX was arrested for driving without a license and marijuana possession in Cheektowaga, New York Friday following a Cash Money/Ruff Ryders concert in Buffalo on Thursday night.
DMX, who was booked under his given name of Earl Simmons, was originally pulled over by authorities for failing to signal and for speeding, as he was apparently clocked at doing 60 mph in a 45 mph zone on the Kensington Expressway, according to a Cheektowaga police spokesperson.
Upon stopping DMX, police discovered that the rapper was driving without a license, which Department of Motor Vehicle records indicated had been previously suspended after Simmons was caught driving without insurance. During a search of the car, Cheektowaga authorities told MTV News that they also found a small amount of pot.
DMX was booked on Friday and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle (considered to be the most serious charge in the case), driving without a license, speeding, failure to signal, failure to notify the DMV of an address change, and unlawful possession of marijuana.
The rapper was released Friday after posting $2,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in a Cheektowaga court on March 21 to answer the charges. The Cash Money/Ruff Ryders tour, featuring DMX, Eve, Juvenile, and the Hot Boyz concludes on March 19 in Hartford, Connecticut.
Despite the arrest, DMX did appear at the Cash Money/Ruff Ryders show on Friday night in Philadelphia, then traveled to Los Angeles to perform "Party Up" at the Soul Train Music Awards on Saturday.
At the Soul Train Awards, DMX received a Sammy Davis Jr. Award recognizing him as one of the Entertainers of the Year. Singer Mary J. Blige was the other recipient of the award.
MURDER INC It appears that the Murder Inc. project which involved DMX, Jay-Z and Ja Rule has been abandoned. In the "Murder they wrote" article written in the March 2000 issue of "The Source" writer Sean Lewis Sharp writes: "Murder Inc was initially supposed to consist of Ja Rule, DMX and Jay-Z. However, due to scheduling conflicts, that initial plan fell through" So it looks like there won't be a Murder Inc album anytime soon. "The Murderers" which consist of Ja, Black Child, Tah Murda, O-1, Ronnie Bumps and Vita is the alternative. Their album "Irv Gotti Presents The Murderers" will be out March 21st.
AND THEN THERE WAS X DMX'S albumn And Then There Was X dropped 2 spots to # 10 on the billboards, but has stood in the top 10 for 10 weeks!!.

DMX PAYS VISIT TO QUEEN LATIFAH SHOW It never hurts to have friends.
Perhaps that's the lesson to be learned from Queen Latifah's syndicated daytime talk show, which has once again landed a high-profile hip-hop guest.
The rapper-turned-host recently welcomed DMX to her set for an episode that will hit the airwaves this Friday, March 3. On the show, DMX talks to the parents of troubled teens and shares stories from his own often difficult upbringing. The rapper talks about his youth, his time in a halfway house, and brings his wife of eleven years onstage to talk about how they've weathered difficult times.
Of course, there's music as well, as DMX delivers a performance of "Party Up," the latest single from "And Then There Was X."
DMX's appearance comes shortly after Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, and Missy Elliott lent their considerable star wattage to Queen Latifah's recently renewed talk show.

He will also tape an upcoming appearance on the "Queen Latifah" show on February 17 and 18. February 6 News
Humane Society Criticizes DMX The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's largest animal protection agency and the operator of animal adoption centers in cities and towns across the country, issued a press release yesterday denouncing the video for DMX's "What's My Name" for glamorizing dogfighting. The video shows snarling pitbulls in chains snapping at one another in what appears to be a ring. The HSUS believes this image "glamorizes dogfighting and perpetuates the stigma that all pit bulls are dangerous and, therefore, unfit to have as pets." The video does not show actual dogfighting. DMX's label, Island/Def Jam, emphasized that the dogs never engaged in fighting and were not harmed. DMX shows his love for dogs by sporting a dog tattoo, raising pit bulls, featuring barking dogs on his multi-platinum-selling records and calling all his best friends "dog." His second album "And Then There Was X" was once tentatively titled "The Dog, The Man, The God." Pit bulls have had a long and hard history in the U.S., particularly in recent years in urban centers like New York City. In 1997, the NYPD and the Housing Authority cooperated in sweeps of public housing projects to round up pit bulls. Pit bull proponents argue that the pit bull terrier is an intelligent breed that is not inherently vicious but must be taught to fight. Some owners train the dogs as fighters in an attempt to make quick cash through illegal dogfighting. Dogfighting is a felony offense in 44 states, and in 46 states, it is illegal to be a spectator at a dogfight. Pit bulls do have their supporters, including Loren Tapley, a volunteer animal rescuer who heads the For Pit's Sake non-profit group, an animal rescue service located in New York City. Tapley became enamored of the breed when she met a pit bull as the ASPCA and tried to adopt the dog. Tapley has a soulmate in DMX, who told MTV in May 1998 "I used to take dogs on the street. I used to bring them home if I could, make somewhere for them to sleep right outside the building. I had dogs as long as I could remember, you know." |
