The Wayward Barrel

'Twas five and twenty years ago,
or so me uncle said,
there appeared a sudden eerie glow
all in the riverbed.

Chorus:
He-la he-la
Never I say
did a barrel lead men
so far astray.

A fisherman tried haul it up,
the barrel o'the sickly glow.
did pull it, and pull it and heaved it up,
I'm sad to say it laid him low.

Chorus

His brother then did venture out
and got the barrel safe to shore.
ut sick he fell, the boistrous lout,
and we heard from him no never more.

Chorus

Everyone then gathered round,
all on the village green.
A score of men was quickly found
to carry the barrel to the queen.

Chorus

The queen herself then did see,
the barrel seemed to shrink and roll.
A muffled voice sang a rueful plea:
"please, please, I'll pay my toll !"

Chorus

It was discovered then and there
a poor old farmer in the barrel hid.
His trade was goat's cheese, blue and fair
ut the toll had made him close the lid.

Chorus

To roll all down the mountain glen,
alas he'd had too much to eat.
So here's a warning to all folk I ken:
If e'er you see a barrel, let it be....
