CHAPTER 1: INIVATATION

Doctor Mark Sloan was making his way down the corridors of Community General hospital after completing his daily rounds. It had been a long 12-hour shift, with several medical emergences, but it was all over now. Mark was tired and all he wanted to do was to go home and have a nice long bath and sleep for the rest of the afternoon, he thought he would pop into a drive through before he returned home. Just then Mark heard his name being called through the intercom system, "Doctor Sloan, there is a call for you on line one". Mark headed to the nurses station and picked up the phone. "Hello, this is Doctor Mark Sloan" the voice on the other line introduced himself as Doctor Ballston from the Hapsburg University of medicine. "Doctor Sloan I was wondering if you might be interested in presenting a series of lectures on cardiology next week for us, sorry for the late notice but the guy who was supposed to do it bailed on us at the last moment."

Mark let out a large yawn and then replied. "Well as it happens I have got some time off next week, I would be happy to do it". "Splendid I’ll send you the details through the post in a day or two" replied Doctor Ballston. "Oh by the way is it ok if I bring some friends to assist" Doctor Ballston replied that it would be fine, Mark said he would confirm his guests at a later date, with that they said good bye and Mark hung up. He decided to go and see if Amanda and Jesse were free next week, Mark continued to walk down the corridor, he past a nurse on the way, he asked her if she knew where Doctor Travis was, "I’m not sure, I think he’s in the Doctors lounge", Mark thanked her and continued on his way. Mark entered the Doctor lounge, sure enough Jesse was there, drinking what looked like the tenth cup of coffee of the day, Jesse looked exhausted. "Working double shifts again Jesse" Mark asked, Jesse said that he had been over doing things a little. "Jesse I wanted to ask you if you were free next week, you see I’ve been asked to present some lectures at the Hapsburg University, I would really appreciate if you could come along, give me support, that sort of thing.

Jesse thought about it for a minute, "Yeah I’ll come along, could use a change of pace, plus the hospital owes me some time off after all the extra shifts I’ve been doing lately". Mark was pleased that Jesse was going to tag along. "Well I’m finished for the day, I’ll just see if Amanda will be able to join us and then I’ll grab some lunch, take it easy Jess". With that Mark left the lounge in search of Amanda. Amanda was in the pathology lab finishing an autopsy on a man in his late 30’s. She is talking into her tape recorder, relaying her findings. "I have found a high level of alcohol in his blood stream which explains why the crash occurred. Both his legs were severed upon impact, leading to a tremendous blood loss which caused death in seconds". Just then Mark walked in. "How are we doing" Mark asked, she replied that she was almost done. She was finishing up a case, the dead man in front of her was involved in a car crash on the freeway involving three other cars, and 8 people were injured, of which six died, he caused the crash.

Amanda was upset by this recent tragedy, "Its so sad Mark, that all those life’s were lost, just because of this mans addiction to drink, its disgusting Mark". Mark was upset by it to, after all he had tried to save two of the victims himself, but he lost them both on the operating table. "Its terrible Amanda, but I didn’t come down here to talk about the case, I’ve been invited to do a series of lecture next week at the Habsburg university, I was wondering if you would like to join me, Jesse’s agreed to come. Amanda smiled, "I bet he agreed quickly right" Mark nodded, Amanda gave a little laugh. "He’s got a girlfriend down there, one of the teachers, I believe her name is Lacy". "Well that explains it (he chucked) so can you make it?" Mark asked. "I should do, I’ve got a lot of work to do but I should have finished it by then" Amanda replied. Mark then left to let Amanda to get on with her work, he continued down the white hospital corridors, suddenly his stomach gave out a large rumble, which meant one thing, it was lunch time.

* * *

Its was now midnight in downtown L.A., Steve is walking his date Julie back to her apartment after an amazing date, it had all gone so well, dinner at a top restaurant and then a trip to the opera. It was Madame Butterfly, although he wasn’t really into opera, it was Julie who absolutely loved it. Steve was bored stiff the whole, but just being with Julie was worth it. He had been seeing her for two weeks now and he hoped that tonight would be the night. Julie was a doctor at Community General who he ran into while meeting his father to discuss a case. He was completely taken with her from the start; she was tall, about 6 feet, had brown hair and wore glasses, she also had a wonderful pair of… ear lobes. She was also quite well endowed in the chest department as well; she was also a very intelligent lady.

They finally reached her apartment building, they went inside and Steve escorted her to her door. "Well here we are" Steve said, "It’s been a lovely evening Steve…(she hesitated, not sure what to say next, all she knew was that she wanted him) would you like to come in, for some coffee or something". Steve smiled and replied that he would, she opened the door and they both entered. Steve lent in to kiss her and as he did she put her arms around him, for a couple of minutes they were locked in a passionate embrace. As they kissed they moved towards the sofa and lay down with Julie on top. They were both getting very turned on and in a fit of passion Steve cried out "oh Sarah", as he did Julie broke their kiss and looked at him, "who’s Sarah? Who the hell is Sarah (Steve gulped) are you seeing someone else behind my back?" Steve looked as guilty as sin, but he responded with "no of course not (lie) there’s no one else but you" (another lie). The truth was that Steve had also been seeing another women, a cop, she was blonde, 30 year of age, about the same height, with a slightly bigger chest, but he hadn’t quite decided between them, but now it seemed that the decision was no longer his.

Julie saw right through the lie, she bolted up from the couch, readjusted her dress, Steve desperately tried to calm her down, but instead she slapped him in the face, she opened the front door and stormed out slamming it behind her. Steve just stood there in the middle of the living room, wondering how it could have gone so wrong. Just then Julie came back in, "why am I leaving, this is my apartment you get out" Steve knew there was nothing he could do to save the night, so he picked up his coat from the sofa and walked past Julie as she held the door open, as soon as Steve was in the hallway Julie slammed the door shut so loud that it sounded like the door would come off its hinges. Steve put on his coat and headed for home, alone.

CHAPTER 2: ARRIVAL

One week later:

Jesse and Amanda pull up outside Mark’s beach house in Jesse’s new blue convertible with the roof up. It is the first day of the lectures and Jesse and Amanda are tagging along, Amanda to give Mark moral support, whereas Jesse is going to spend some time with his new girlfriend. Jesse and Amanda get out of the car and go to the front door of the beach house. Mark appears and lets them in, greeting them with open arms. "Glad you could make it, all packed? As they will be staying on site to save going back and forth everyday. They all relief Mark by saying they are ready. Mark tells them to wait there while he goes and gets his bags. He quickly returns and they all leave the house and drive away heading for down town L.A. They’ve only been driving a couple of minutes when Mark suddenly remembers something, he has left something behind, all his notes in a small bag next to the door. He tells Jesse to turn around and head back for the beach house. Mark very apologetically gets out of the car and quickly goes in the house, picks up his bag and runs back to the car. They are now all set and drive away. They are cruising down the freeway, Jesse in the driver’s seat, all listening to music from the CD player; they are listening to a CD of Abba’s greatest hits.

Marks seems to be slightly distressed as he sits in the back seat of the car with the air rapidly flowing past him, messing up his hair as they drive along. He continually looks at the speedometer. Amanda looks back and Mark’s expression tells her that he is worried, she comforts him and he begins to relax. Then suddenly it dawns on him that he forgot to lock the front door as he left so quickly. He tells Jesse and Amanda, who look very annoyed at the news, "Mark we’ll never get there at this rate if we have to continue to turn round", exclaimed Amanda, Mark apologies as they turn round once more.

An hour later they arrive at the University, only a couple of minutes later than expected, despite continued interruptions and parked in the University car park. They all emerge from the car and made there way towards the main building to check in, when they are greeted by the head of Cardiology, outside the main building, he has been looking out for their arrival. He is in his mid thirties and wears classes, dressed in a very smart suit, well built and just under six feet tall, he gives the impression of being a very respectable person.

He extends his hand towards Mark, "Doctor Sloan, (turning to the others) and you must be Doctor Bentley, and Doctor Travis, welcome to the University, so glad you could make it, I hope you had a pleasant journey?" The gang nodded in agreement, he continued, "I’m Doctor Peter Ballston, head of cardiology; we spoke on the phone Doctor Sloan. It is a great honour to finally meet you; I’ve been a keen student of your work for many years, not to mention of your involvement in helping the L.A. police department, most interesting. I used to be a practising Doctor my self, it always kept me so busy, you must tell me how you found the time Dr. Sloan". Mark was quite surprised that he had heard of what he liked to call his exploits; Mark answered the Doctor’s question. "Well it’s all about having the right help, (he gave a smile to his companions, who in turn smiled back), plus having a son who is a police detective comes in handy, especially with outstanding parking tickets". They all gave a little laugh, Doctor Ballston then looked at his watch, noticing that time was getting on and returned the conversation to the matters in hand. "If you will follow me I will take you all to the lecture theatre, we hope to start your lecture promptly at 11 o clock Dr. Sloan if that is all right with you?" Mark nodded in agreement.

They continued to walk from the main building to the lecture theatre, a very big building that is used for lectures and meetings that can easily fit 500 people. It is a grand old building, like the rest of Campus; the whole campus used to be a Protestant school before it was converted into a university 50 years ago, aside from some new buildings most of the old layout remains. Doctor Ballston gives them a brief tour as they go to the lecture, "on the left we have the language block and over here we have the University chapel. Although with the decline of religion, especially in our young people its unfortunately becoming obsolete, but we still have services occasionally". It’s a beautiful building" commented Mark. "Later after the lecture perhaps you would like to have a look inside" said Ballston, "yes that would be very nice," said Mark. They finally reach the lecture theatre building.

"Here we are Doctor Sloan, we’ve just had the facilities in here upgraded". They enter the building and Doctor Sloan and his team are very impressed with it, the shear size and the equipment in the theatre is impressive. Fully equipped with plasma television monitors, automatic blinds to cover the window during presentations, overhead protectors and pointer lasers and every other imaginable technological aid to improve presentations and talks. Mark and Doctor Ballston go to the front of the theatre and prepare for the lecture, Mark pulls out his notes from his brief case and places them on the podium in front of him, and then Peter went through the controls of the theatre. Mark began to look worried as he glanced at the complicated control panel before him, but he put on a brave face.

It was now approaching 11 O’ clock and Mark is calmly waiting for the students to arrive, Amanda and Jesse have already taken their seats near the front of theatre. They mouth Mark good luck as the first wave of students enter the Theatre. The Theatre hall fills up with students, probably about 300 hundred in total. Dr. Ballston goes up to the podium and introduces Mark. Meanwhile Jesse spots Lacy sitting a couple of rows in front of him and to his right. He gives Amanda a nudge and points her out, Amanda looks at Jesse as if to approve of her, Lacy is a very attractive woman, 5’11, flowing blonde hair, with a slim and in shape figure. As Jesse was pointing her out Lacy caught Jesse’s eye and gave him a smile, it was the sweetest perfect smile that Jesse ever saw, and at that moment his feelings were confirmed, he knew she was very special. Dr. Ballston finished his opening remarks and Mark approached the podium. "Good morning ladies and gentlemen, I’m Dr. Mark Sloan from Community General Hospital, today I’m going to talk about the fascinating world of Cardiology, but first of all I would like to start with any questions you may have on any aspects of the field. If you were thinking about specialising in this area then this would be a great opportunity for you to find out more. Does anyone have any questions? To Marks horror almost every student puts up there hand simultaneously. Mark is bewildered by this, wondering where to start, he simply smiles and then puts his best foot forward, "right we’ll start with you sir in the second row in the blue shirt, what’s your question?”

CHAPTER 3: DISCOVERY

The lecture went without any mishaps, well without any serious mishaps. During the lecture everything was going perfectly until Mark wanted to use the over head projector. Instead of activating the projector he accidentally hit the button that raised the blinds on the windows Mark quickly realised his mistake and quickly lowered them again, receiving only a few giggles from the audience. Then trying to find the right button he mistakenly turned off the lights in the theatre, but quickly turned them on again. Mark was then saved with the help of Dr. Ballston who had got out of his chair to come to Marks rescue. No other mishaps occurred and the lecture ended promptly at 12:30. As soon as the bell went the students got up and left in a mad rush, cutting Doctor Sloan off in mid speech as he was trying to talk over the sound of 300 people leaving the room, eventually Mark graciously gave up.

As the students left Jesse and Amanda went up to Mark and congratulated him as did Dr. Ballston who apologised for the students leaving so abruptly. Mark accepts his apology and they all begin to leave about five minutes after the students. "You really do have very good facilities here Dr. Ballston" commented Mark. They exit the building and start to head towards the lunch hall. "Thank you Dr. Sloan, as you probably noticed we are having renovations done all over the campus, new laboratories and new equipment is being put in. These advancements should make us one of the best Medical universities in the country, in facility terms".

They continue to walk to the lunch hall when they turn a corner and discover a man lying face down on the ground. Mark, Jesse and Amanda run to him. They turn him over gently, Dr. Ballston’s face goes completely white as recognises the man, "oh my god, that’s Arthur Simms, the University chaplain". Mark feels for a pulse, everyone looks at him as he does so, he then slowly looks up to everyone and shakes his head, there is no pulse he’s dead, everyone especially Dr. Ballston is effected by this. Then Mark notices something as he examines him, "look his necks been broken, and look his cloths have been ruffled up, looks like a fight occurred, he’s been murdered". Everyone looks confused, "but who would want to murder a Chaplain?" inquired Jesse. "Well who ever it was he could still be around, Jesse, Amanda have a look around". They comply but they can’t see any one. Meanwhile Mark calls the police and an ambulance. Jesse and Amanda run back to Mark, "we didn’t see anything," said Amanda, Mark began to look even more worried. " We’ve got a killer on the loose" he exclaimed.

CHAPTER 4: THE BRIEFING

Within half an hour the LAPD and medical personal were at the scene of the crime. Steve, Mark’s son was in charge of the investigation, his men were busy dusting for prints and searching the scene of the crime for any evidence that could give them the slightest clue to the murderers identify. Whereas the medical staff were making preparations to move the body to begin the possibly very important autopsy which could lead to the identify of the killer.

Everyone was looking very busy, the university students and teachers were already gathered around the crime area in hope of understanding what happened to a man they all respected and looked up to. Mark was giving his statement to a police detective, "that’s all I can tell you I’m afraid, I hope that will be of some help to you at least". The detective thanked Mark for his time and left to interview Jesse and Amanda. Mark walked to Steve who seemed unsettled.

Mark told Steve what he had just told the detective. "That’s not much to go on dad, but we can narrow down the time when the murder took place", Mark nodded and continued talking. "We were in the building at about 10:30 and the lecture finished about 12:30, but the students didn’t arrive until 11:00, so it places the murder between 11:00 and 12:30". "This should allow us to determine the movements of the University staff and students very quickly," Steve added with a faint sense of hope in his voice.

"I’m going to head over to the main building and talk to the staff, try and shed some light on this situation" Mark announced as he left his son and accompanied Dr. Ballston to the main building. Mark gathered everyone in the staff common room and began to relate the day’s happenings. Everyone responded with total shock "I can give you the assurance that everything is being done to identify the killer, but I do suggest that the university is closed down until this is resolved" said Mark. The administrator was very obliging and took his advice, however the university could not be completely cleared due to many of the students having to take their final exams and other tests. He agreed to relocate some but it was simply not possible to relocate them all. As a result all the students who had to stay were asked to limit their movements on the campus. There was also another problem; a lot of the students lived on campus. "Don’t worry" Mark comforted the administrator "security will be increased day and night on site". Although this was said to inspire comfort, it inspired little in Mark. Mark left the meeting knowing that any good killer could get past the heaviest security, especially if his greatest fear was true, that the killer was a member of staff. But what was the chances of the killer striking again, the killer would probably try and establish a low profile and attempt to cover his tracks so he wouldn’t be discovered, Mark just hoped that killer didn’t have another agenda.

CHAPTER FIVE: SETTING UP CAMP

Mark, Amanda and Jesse, despite the current events decided to stay in the university accommodation, using it as a base for the investigation, in a case where the lives of teenagers were at stake they felt they couldn’t simply leave them out in the cold. They were shown to the student accommodation as the day drew to a close and were introduced to the housemaster Mr. Bixby, he had an imposing presence, Mark guessed that he was about 6 feet 2. He also had a deep authoritarian voice and spoke in a strange accent, they couldn’t quite place it, it wasn’t English, not German, perhaps he was from a small state Mark thought. Mr. Bixby was well built and had a thinning beard; he must have been in his early 50’s. Amanda thought he was quite attractive at first, but the accent was a turn off. Mr. Bixby said that he would try and make them as comfortable as possible. The accommodation was quite bland, with dull grey walls; the entire place lacked any home like qualities. It reminded Mark of his Old University days, although the standards had dropped a bit since then.

Amanda had to leave Mark and Jesse later that after noon and then rejoined them late that evening, as she had to finish her autopsy report on Mr. Simms, she returned with the report in hand. She headed for Marks room to tell him her findings, just as he was getting ready for bed Amanda knocked on Mark’s door, he invited her in. She relayed her findings: "his neck was broken from behind during what looks like a very violent struggle, there are cuts and bruises all over his body, and a lot of blood, all of which is his own. No fingerprints were found or DNA, the killer must have been very careful or very lucky not to leave anything behind". Mark interrupted and asked about the piece of stone found at the scene next to the body. " I was just getting to that" Amanda continued "it wasn’t used in the fight itself, probably dislodged during the struggle, probably from a nearby wall, given the age of the building wall pieces could easily be dislodged by someone banging up against it. However that’s not important, what I did find, was a brown strand of fabric on the victims body, which could belong to the killer as Simms wasn’t wearing any brown clothing" Amanda said triumphantly.

"It certainly gives us some thing to go on, what’s Jesse up to? Mark inquired. "He’s been working on the whereabouts of the staff and students, but he just went out on his hot date with Lacy" Amanda said. "Well I suppose he needs the rest, he’s been working a lot of double shifts lately" Mark added. "You saw Lacy right Mark? With someone as good looking as that, I think the last thing Jesse is going to do is rest!" With a grin Amanda left and Mark continued to get ready for bed amused at Amanda’s comment. Half way through the night Mark awoke, not being able to sleep due to the case playing over and over in his mind, as they often did. Half his passion for solving murders was usually so he could get a goodnights sleep, as he was someone who couldn’t easily let things go. He got up and was about to go to the toilet when he realised there was no toilet paper, Mark left his room to go in search for some. After a couple of minutes scrambling around in the dark of the ground floor of the boarding house he was finally successful. He quickly headed back towards his room.

Just when he was about to go up the stairs he was greeted by Mr. Bixby. "Ah Doctor Sloan, settling in all right are we," he asked. Mark stopped his advance and answered Bixby. "Yes fine thank you, just going off to bed now" Mark replied. "Then I won’t keep you a second longer Dr. Sloan, good night" and with that he headed for his study and Mark for his room. But just then Mark looked at Mr. Bixby as he left, to find that he was limping away into his room. "Hurt your leg Mr. Bixby?" Mark called out. "Yes I knocked it a couple of days ago when I took a few students hill walking during a field trip" Mr. Bixby replied. "Anything I can help you with" Mark asked. Bixby showed him the injury, which Mark examined for a few seconds, the leg was quite bruised. "Well its not too bad, I suggest you put some ice on it, try and keep off the leg for a few days and it should be fine" Mark advised.

As Mark left Bixby it suddenly dawned on him, he flashed his mind back creating a recreation of murder, a technique which he found invaluable. He saw the struggle inch by inch, second per second, the attacker delivering another blow, causing Simms to crash against the wall, dislodging a section, landing on the murderer, who’s face had been blank for so many days, but no longer, the man he saw now was Mr. Bixby. That was no walking injury, Mark headed up to his room with a look of triumph on his face. He stopped off at Amanda’s room to tell her the good news. " Amanda, I’ve got a lead, I think I know who committed the murder" Mark beamed with pride as he made the revelation. Amanda who was barley awake could only mumble "that’s great Mark, tell me in the morning, when you’ve caught him, good night" and with that Amanda showed Mark to the door and then collapsed on her bed. Mark returned to his room a bit disappointed that his break through went unpraised. But it had been a long day for all of them, and he couldn’t blame Amanda. He returned to his room, remembered he had to go to the toilet and then retired for the night, sleeping like a log knowing that everything was beginning to come together.

CHAPTER 6: LOOSE THREADS

The next morning Jesse woke up with the sunlight on his face shinning through the open curtains, he looked over to find Lacy lying next to him. Jesse had to pinch himself to see if he was dreaming, it all seemed like a dream, everything was perfect, just like in a dream. Just like last night when he and Lacy had gone to a romantic restaurant, where they ate and talked to the late hours of the night. After which they went back to her flat where they made love all night long. He couldn’t believe that he was with this beautiful, prefect women. Jesse was the first thing she saw when she woke up, he just stared at her, with a look of contentment, and she just stared back. They then held each other for a while before falling back to sleep in each other’s arms.

Meanwhile Mark, Amanda and Steve were assembled in the university I.T. centre studying the CTV footage in an attempt to find some clue to the killers identify. It turned about there was a lot of footage from the murder day as the campus had over 100 cameras operating at any one time. However what was unbelievable was that the area where the murder took place was not covered by the cameras. "You mean to tell me that there’s no footage from the scene of the crime?" Steve exclaimed. The I.T. technician looked at Steve like a little schoolboy who was about to be told off. "There is a camera there but we don’t have the funding to have film in each one, about a third of the cameras are empty around the campus, but we change them around every month". The technician replied. "The positions of the ‘live’ camera are kept on file" he added. "Well it at least proves that this was done by an insider, how else could he know which cameras were working" Mark deduced. However Steve pointed out the possibility that he could have simply got lucky. "Let’s scan the footage of the other cameras for any sign of abnormal behaviour, near the murder scene or on the campus at the time of the murder" Amanda suggested. "That could take weeks, looking at everyone who went by in every detail, by then the killer could of disposed of the any evidence or even worse, committed another murder" Steve added. Mark gestured the technician to leave the room so the gang could begin examining the footage. "I think I can narrow it down a bit for us, I noticed yesterday that Mr. Bixby the dormitory master was limping. I examined his injury, which suggested to me that a heavy object fell on him, it would explain the presence of the piece of stone from the wall at the scene of the crime, I think he killed Simms". Everyone looked at Mark with a look of uncertainty. "I know it’s a little week but that’s all we’ve got. Let’s find Bixby on the tapes and lets see what we can see" added Mark.

They scanned through the tapes for what seemed like hours until Bixby appeared on the screen, he was walking from class to class popping in and out of various buildings. An hour later Bixby reappears, but still nothing occurs out of the ordinary, and then Mark spots something. "There it is, pause the footage and zoom in on that section" Mark pointed to the screen. Everyone looked puzzled as Bixby was only walking around the buildings in the shot. "Look at what he’s wearing" Mark continued. He was wearing a brown suit and jacket. "Amanda you said you found a brown piece of fabric on Simms, there’s where it came from" Mark pointed to Bixby’s jacket, it looked like it was of the same texture and shade as the brown fabric found on the body. They continued to scan the footage for any more information. They found that before the murder took place Bixby was wearing his brown jacket but after the murder the jacket was inexplicably gone and he was only wearing his shirt and tie. "It’s got to be him," Steve said triumphantly. However they still needed concrete evidence, they needed the brown jacket and of course the biggest piece of the puzzle, the motive behind this terrible crime. Just then Jesse came running through the door, "sorry I’m late" he exclaimed, "did I miss anything? He asked. "You could say that" replied Steve".

CHAPTER 7: DIVERSION

That evening Amanda, Jesse and Mark returned to the boarding house in order to find evidence that Bixby was the murderer, to do that Mark planed to break into Bixby’s office and living quarters. "Ok remember Jesse, Amanda keep him occupied for as long as possible, I should be back in 10 minutes". With that they parted and Mark headed down to Bixby’s office, Bixby was upstairs helping students with there work. Mark picked the lock of his office and slowly entered and took out his torch keeping the lights off. The first place he went to was Bixby’s bedroom, which was accessible through his office. Mark couldn’t find his jacket anywhere so Mark went back to the office and began searching the desk. Meanwhile Jesse who was positioned at the top of the stairs saw Bixby coming his way. Jesse intercepted him and thanked him for letting them stay, giving Bixby a few false facts about how the investigation was going. Back in the office Mark had found some interesting folders, he turned on the desk light and examined them further, and he then took out a miniature camera and photographed them.

Jesse couldn’t hold Bixby any longer and Bixby continued down the stairs towards Amanda where he greeted her with smiles, they began to talk, Amanda talked quite loudly so Mark could here them. Mark quickly finished photographing the documents and then left by the office window carefully putting everything back into place. Mark then entered the building from the main door to see Amanda and Bixby parting with Bixby entering his office. After he went inside Mark and Amanda headed upstairs to their rooms, "That was close," exclaims Mark. "Too close, I’ve now got a date tomorrow" replied Amanda. They both walk up to their rooms attempting to contain their laughter. The team after a few minutes gathered into Mark’s room. "Well what did you find Mark" Jesse asked. "I couldn’t find the jacket but I did find some interesting documents which I photographed, I’ll get them developed in the morning and run them past Steve, hopefully this should shed some light on the situation". "I don’t think Steve’s going to be too happy when he finds out what we did tonight," added Amanda. "I know but there was no other way, but if we had been caught the investigation would have been jeopardised. But now hopefully with these documents we’ll kick start it". They all then retired to their rooms and went to bed, knowing that tomorrow would be a busy day.

CHAPTER 8: DISCOVERY #2 &3

The next morning Mark woke up to some terrible news via a phone call from Steve who was on the University Campus. "Dad you better come quick, we’ve found one of the students lying face up in the university swimming pool this morning, he’s been murdered" Steve exclaimed. Mark quickly dressed and alerted the others to meet him by the poo1. It was revealed that the student’s name was Paul Clark, a first year medical student; he was only 19 years old. "This has got to be related to the Simms murder" Jesse said, "but how, why would someone kill a kid". Mark considered the possibilities and came to the conclusion that he must have witnessed the murder of the chaplain and as a result Bixby killed him to protect himself, or Clark could have tried to black mail him, but either way it fit. But as usual they needed prove to arrest Bixby, not wild assumptions. Then Mark remembered the photographs he took of the documents and went over to Steve to layout his plan. Steve was on the phone to his police chief, giving him the last developments, Mark could also tell that Steve was receiving some bad news as well as relating some. He approached his son with concern; Steve then finished his call and walked towards his father. "Dad we’ve got a serious situation back in the city, you remember the bus bombing that looked like a possible terrorist attack a few months back? Well while we were out here it appears that they’ve struck again, three buses in the centre of the city just exploded simultaneously, the police believe there connected. I’ve been reassigned; I’m off the case. I got to head back immediately" explained Steve.
