"Hey, Dad. Yeah I know. I just picked up Amanda. We're on our way. You and Jesse go ahead and get a table. We'll be there in a few minutes." "Okay, Steve. See you then." Steve hung up the phone and looked at Amanda who was sitting in the passenger seat, "Sorry I was late picking you up. Had some last minute paper work to finish." "That's fine. So are they going to save us a table?" "Yeah," Steve replied as he stopped for a red light. From out of nowhere, the sound of a shattering glass disrupted Steve and Amanda's conversation. Steve turned around, "What the hell!" and was met with a gun in his face." "Don't do anything sudden. You and your lady friend just need to get out of the car." Steve slowly opened his door, "Go ahead, Amanda, just get out." A second masked man stood on the driver's side as the two exited the car-he pointed his gun towards Steve and Amanda. "Empty your pockets and that purse." Steve and Amanda did so and placed the items in the bag that the gunman was holding. "Look, that's all. There's no more." The man looked at Steve's wallet, "A cop huh? Hey, Mitch this one's a cop." To Steve, "And you're just going to let us take the car?" "I didn't want anyone to get hurt." "Isn't that noble?" He walked over to where Steve and Amanda were standing and pointed the gun at Amanda's head. Steve's instincts took over, "Now, don't do anything stupid. You don't need any more problems." The gunman moved the gun from Amanda's head and hit Steve on the head. The blow was enough to knock Steve to the ground. Amanda quickly knelt down beside him while speaking to the attacker, "Why don't you just take the car and leave us alone? Steve are you okay?" Before he could answer, the gunman raised the gun with intentions of hitting Amanda. With a rush of adrenaline, Steve pushed Amanda out of the way and the butt of the gun struck Steve on his face. As a result, Steve was now lying on the ground, completely vulnerable to the kicks that were about to come. The first kick came to his side, the second to his back. "Hey Riley. Never mind that. Let's go before someone sees us." And with that comment, Riley gave Steve a final hard kick in his side. As the car drove off, Amanda struggled to her feet, "Steve are you all right?" "Yeah, I think so." Steve grimaced as he struggled to sit up. She looked at him, "No you're not. Here take this for your nose." She handed him a scarf, "Your nose is bleeding. Can you sit up?" Steve groaned as he struggled to sit up and Amanda helped him to prop against a nearby tree. His voice etched with pain, "Are you okay?" "Other that a little shaky, I'm fine. Worried about you at the moment though." Amanda reached into her pocket, "Hey I've got my cell phone. I thought it was in my purse." She dialed 911 and was soon talking to an operator, "Yes, we've been car jacked. We're at the corner of Clinton and Avery." "Is there anyone injured?" "Yes, minor injuries, but we will probably need an ambulance." After the call, Amanda knelt beside Steve, "How are you doing?" He kept his head propped against the tree, "It's still bleeding." "How about anything else? You seem to be breathing kind of hard." He cut his eyes towards her, and she pressed further, "Honestly, Steve." Reluctantly, Steve told her, "My side and back are hurting." Amanda patted his shoulder, "You're going to be fine." She paused a moment, "You know I never called Mark. He's going to be worried." She dialed his number, "Hey Mark, it's me. Yeah, I know. Listen, we've been car jacked. Yeah, we're both okay. Steve got a little banged up, and we're waiting on the cops and ambulance. Just meet us at the hospital." Just as Amanda finished her conversation, two police cars pulled up to the scene and the sounds of the ambulance were not far away. Two of the officers approached Amanda, "I'm Officer Drake Miller, and this is Officer Chad Mullins, "Are you injured ma'am?" Amanda shook her head, "No, but he is," she replied pointing to Steve. The three made their way over to Steve. Miller knelt down beside him, "The ambulance is pulling up now." Steve struggled to speak, "They got my badge when they took the car." "You're a cop?" "Yeah. Lieutenant Steve Sloan. They took my badge and her purse." Steve was struggling. The paramedics pulled up and unloaded as the officer stood up, "You get taken care of first and we'll get your statement later." Amanda stood close as the paramedics began to examine Steve. One looked to Amanda, "Did you see what happened?" "Yes, I did." She began to explain how Steve had gotten hurt, "He got hit in the head with the gun two times, and kicked in the back and stomach three times." The paramedic turned his attention back to Steve. He replaced the scarf Steve was using with a piece of gauze. Steve flinched when the medic pushed too hard on his nose, "Sorry, Lieutenant. Let me take a look at that nose. All right go ahead and hold this in place. Are you feeling dizzy?" "Yeah, some." "Think you could stand long enough to sit on the stretcher if we help you?" "Yeah, probably." "Okay, on my count. 1 2 3." And with the help of the two EMTs Steve managed to stand. He swayed, but the paramedics helped him to keep his balance, "You okay?" "Yeah, just a little woozy." "Good. Now just sit down on the stretcher." Steve did so and for a moment he sat on the edge of the stretcher. "All right, I'm going to swing your legs up, and all you need to do is lie back." Once he was settled on the stretcher, Amanda walked to the head of the gurney and looked at Steve's nose-it was already starting to bruise, as was his left eye. As she examined Steve's face, the paramedic lifted Steve's shirt to expose his abdomen. "Tell me where you're hurting." Steve opened his eyes and looked to the EMT, "My head, back and side." The paramedic gently explored Steve's abdomen. Steve flinched when the paramedic hit tender spots. "All right, sorry about that. Okay, we're going to put in an IV line and then get you transported to the hospital." After getting the IV hooked up, the EMTs lifted Steve into the ambulance. Once inside, Amanda leaned over to Steve, "Steve." He opened his eyes and looked to Amanda, "What?" "When I talked to Mark awhile ago, he said that he and Jesse would meet us at the hospital." After several minutes, the ambulance reached the hospital. The EMTs pushed Steve into the ER, "We've got a car jacking victim. He's complaining of head, abdominal, and lower back pain. BP is 100/50, pulse is 80. He's on 10 liters of oxygen. Abdominal tenderness and bruising, facial tenderness and bruising, and a 3-4 inch gash above the eyebrow. IV line started in the field." The ER doctor directed the stretcher to a trauma room. "On my count, we move him." Once Steve was settled on the gurney, the doctor began his exam, "Steve, can you hear me?" Steve slightly nodded. "Good, you just relax, and we'll take care of you." Dr. Maples shined a light in Steve's eyes, "Let's get a head CT," and then he gently manipulated Steve's face, "and also a facial series." He moved his way down to Steve's abdomen and received a slight gasp from the patient, "There's some guarding tenderness. Let's get an abdominal CT and a chest x-ray. Get the lab work going-I want a trauma panel, CBC, and an urine dip." When Dr. Maples finished his exam, he walked over to Amanda, who had been waiting by the trauma room door, "Amanda." "Charles, how is he?" "Probable broken nose and broken ribs. We'll know for sure when we get the x-rays back. Is Mark here yet?" "No, but he should be here any minute. Is Steve awake?" "Yeah, he is. Wait, here's Mark." Amanda stepped outside the room just as Mark and Jesse approached the room. "Amanda, is he okay?" "Mark, he's going to be fine. Probably a few minor breaks. Charles worked him up, and we're waiting on the X-rays to come back." Mark leaned against the wall while Jesse looked to Amanda, "Are you okay? Were you hurt?" "No, Jesse, I wasn't hurt. I'm fine. He's awake if you want to go in." "Yeah I do." Mark was the first to enter, and Amanda and Jesse followed behind. Mark approached the bed, "Steve." Groggily, Steve opened his eyes, "Dad." "I'm right here. Just take it easy." Steve nodded slightly, his eyes too heavy to keep open. After several minutes, Dr. Maples returned to the room, "His films are back." All four doctors walked tot he x-ray board. Dr. Maples first put the abdominal scan and chest x-ray on the board, "A few broken ribs, but no bleeding. And that left kidney looks bruised." Jesse studied the x-ray, "Any blood in the urine?" "No the dip was negative." "What about his head CT?" Mark was concerned. "Well, slight concussion, but look here. That nose is definitely broken, but it's a non-displaced fracture-he won't have to have surgery. All in all, he's pretty lucky. Nothing too serious, but he will definitely be sore for a while. We'll get that head lac sutured and move him to a room." Dr. Maples returned to Steve and prepared to stitch the cut on Steve's head. The sting of the antiseptic caused Steve to flinch. His heavy eyes opened. "Sorry Lieutenant. I'm just going to stitch up this gash on your head, and then get you to a room so that you can get some rest." Steve nodded, his thoughts beginning to become clearer, "Is my dad around?" "Yes, he's over there with Amanda and Jesse." Upon hearing his son ask for him, Mark made his way to Steve's side. Jesse and Amanda followed. "What is it, son?" Dr. Maples turned Steve's head at an angle so he could reach the laceration easier, "Don't move your head." "Okay." He then focused his eyes towards Mark, "Any word on the car?" Mark looked to Amanda. Amanda looked down at Steve-his face already darkly bruised. Her heart ached because the hit that had caused that bruising was originally meant for her. "No, Steve. So far there hasn't been any sign of the car or the men. But the Captain said that they are looking." "Hmm." A pause. "Amanda are you okay?" "Oh, yeah Steve. I'm fine." Dr. Maples finished the last stitch, "and you will be fine too. All finished with the sutures. All in all, nothing serious. Few minor breaks and a lot of bruising. You'll be sore for a while, but you're going to be fine. And as soon as we get a room for you, we'll send you upstairs." Mark spoke for Steve, "Thanks, Charles." "Sure, and if you need anything, just ring the nurse." A little while later, a nurse entered the room, "We've got a room for you, and as soon as the doctor finishes with your chart, we'll get you moved." And true to her word, A few minutes later, Steve was being moved. As the nurse was pushing the stretcher out of the door, she spoke to Mark, "There was a Captain Newman asking to come in. I told him it wasn't a good time, and then he ask to see one of you." Amanda laid her hand on Mark's arm, "I'll go. I might be able to help." Jesse walked beside her, "I'll go with you." Steve looked to Amanda, "I want to talk to him." Mark interjected, "You will, but first you need to get settled." Amanda moved her hand to Steve's shoulder, "I'll bring him up in a few minutes." "Thanks Amanda." She smiled at him as the nurse continued to push him towards the elevator. Amanda went the opposite direction. She approached the captain, "Captain Newman, hi." "Dr. Bentley. How is Lieutenant Sloan?" "He's going to be fine. Broken nose, ribs, and bruising, but he'll be fine. They're moving him right now, but once he gets settled, he should be ready to talk to you." "That's fine, but I actually need to talk to you too." "Sure, we can go in here," Amanda motioned to an empty exam room. Once they were seated Captain Newman began, "How many were there?" "Two. And both wore masks." "Any distinguishable features about them?" "They were tall, slightly taller than Steve. Both wore jeans, and one a red shirt and the other a blue shirt." "Did either of them say anything?" "Yes, but I don't remember exactly." "That's fine. Didā¦" Amanda interrupted the captain, "Wait. They talked to each other. They each said the other's name." "Do you remember the names?" "I know for sure one was Mitch. And the second one was Robert. No, Richard. No Riley. It was Riley. Mitch and Riley." "You're sure?" "Yes, definitely." "Good. And if you remember anything else, you call me." "I will." Amanda looked to her watch, "You know I'm sure Steve is settled by now. You can probably go ahead on up." "Okay, thank you." -------------- Steve was grateful his move was completed. The noisy emergency room was a terrible place to have a headache, and the ride on the stretcher up to his room was too bumpy for his injured body to enjoy. His new bed, although far from comfortable, was a step above the ER stretcher he had lain on for so long. Even the slightest move hurt, and the slightest movement of his head made him dizzy. The nurse finally finished all of the admission questions and had, for the time being, left him alone. Mark stood at the foot of the bed and patted Steve's foot, "You okay?" Steve opened his eyes and focused them on his father. He was grateful he was lying down, the room was spinning too much even if he was lying down. "Yeah, I'm fine. Captain Newman coming up?" "You sure you're up to talking right now?" "Yeah. The sooner they start looking for these guys, the better." Steve answered. He didn't risk nodding his head-the movement would have probably only intensified his already pounding head. "Amanda was going to talk to him, and then bring him up here." And in a matter of minutes, the door opened and the captain entered the room. Mark turned to the man, "Captain." "Dr. Sloan. Good to see you. Mind if we have a few minutes?" "Not at all. Steve, I'll be back later." Once alone, Captain Newman leaned on the tray table, "How are you Steve?" "Gotta tell you. I've been better." Newman smiled a knowing smile. He knew Steve was uncomfortable. "I'll make this short. We'll get the main details now, and the other after you've had a chance to get some rest." Steve agreed, grateful that the Captain understood. "all right, what can you tell me?" "I was driving. We got to a red light, and just before it turned green, a guy broke the passenger side backseat window, and held a gun at me and Amanda, and told us to get out. We did, and a second guy demanded my wallet and Amanda's purse. He found out I was a cop, said a few things and hit me with the gun. Amanda said something, and he tried to hit her. He got me instead, and then took advantage and kicked at me a few times. They left. Amanda called 911, and that's the sum of it." "Good. What about the guys? Any information on them?" "Yeah, their first names. Mitch and Riley I think. At least that's what they called each other. They were both wearing masks. Both were wearing blue jeans, but different color shirts." Steve thought a minute, "I can't remember what colors though. Blue and red maybe." "That's what Dr. Bentley told me earlier." Steve seemed relieved that he remembered correctly. "Both male I assume?" "Yeah, definitely." "Any idea on ages?" "Well, not exactly sure, but they seemed to be about 30 or so. Well-built and they knew what they were doing. Didn't seem nervous at all." Steve yawned, his fatigue becoming harder to mask. Newman noticed, "That's good Steve. We've already got officers on the case. You don't worry about it right now. Get some rest." "I will. Keep me informed." "Will do." Steve's eyes involuntarily closed as Newman left. Soon after, Mark came to check on Steve. "Steveā¦" Mark's voiced trailed off when he saw that Steve was asleep. "I'm not asleep. My eyes are just tired." "Well, that's a very good sign that you need to let them stay closed and you get some much needed sleep." Steve's speech began to become slurred, "Is Amanda really okay?" "Yes, she's fine. And you can talk to her yourself tomorrow. Right now you take care of yourself and sleep." "Okay, Dad." Steve finally relaxed and he was asleep in seconds, the effects of the day finally taking its toll. ---------------- Amanda entered Steve's room the next morning. He was still asleep. She studied his face for a moment. The dark bruising around his nose and under his eyes had become a dark purple. Steve shifted and slightly moaned. He moved his hand to his side, and opened his eyes. Unaware that anyone was in the room, he opened his eyes and stared at the ceiling. He reached over to turn on the TV, and an involuntary gasp escaped Steve. Amanda smiled, "Sore?" Surprised, Steve looked over and smiled back at her, "Yeah, some." Amanda sat on the edge of the bed, "Sleep okay?" Steve shrugged, "Good enough." "How are you feeling this morning?" "I'm all right. What about you? Didn't get too much of a chance to talk to you yesterday." "I'm fine. It's still kind of unnerving, but I'm fine." "Have you heard anything on the case?" "I haven't heard." "This is so irritating being in this bed, when I should be out there hunting down these men." Amanda stood next to the bed, "I know it's frustrating, but you need to rest right now. In a few days, you'll be better and then you can get out there." "I hate lying around like this when I know I could be doing something to help." "The officers seem to be doing everything that needs to be done." Steve laid his head back against the pillow, "I know, but you know me." "Yeah I know. But tell me the truth, do you really feel like getting up out of that bed right now?" Steve sighed, "Not really." "Well, then, I suggest that you rest now and wait a few days." "I think my dad is rubbing off on you," Steve smiled. A while passed and a knock on the door interrupted Steve and Amanda's conversation. "Come in." Captain Newman entered, "Morning, Detective, Dr. Bentley." Steve raised the head of the bed, "Any news on the car?" "Nothing new on your car, but we have uncovered some other cases that are more than likely related to this case." "Really?" "Yeah. Turns out there have been 3 other car jackings with a similar MO. Each has taken place on an abandoned road, each car has been occupied by a man and a woman, all at gunpoint." "Anybody ever been killed or injured." "Yes, in each case, at least one of the victims if not both were injured. However, none too serious. Descriptions of the men are the same." "But no idea who they are?" "No, but we did recover a video from one of the security cameras that was situated at a store near where you two were attacked." "Any clear view of either of the men?" "Not really. The images were blurry, but we are getting the computer guys and forensics to work on them to see if we can get something off the video. And we're running the names through all the databases we have to see if the names match with any other similar cases." "If I think of anything new, I will let you know." "Good. And I will keep you informed if we find anything new." ******************* A few days later, Steve rested on the couch. The news program on the TV was talking about the upcoming events of the weekend. And towards the end of the newscast, the reporter spoke of breaking news, 'There has just been a report of a car jacking in East Vine Street. A young couple was returning from a school dance when two men approached their car at gunpoint. The young man resisted the attackers and was injured when one of the assailants fired his gun. There is no word as to the condition of the man. We will keep you updated as details of this case are released.' Steve sat up on the edge of the couch. And within a few minutes of the news report, Steve's phone rang, "Sloan, here." "Lieutenant Sloan, this is Captain Newman. Have you heard about the recent attack?" "Yeah, I just saw it on the news. How bad is that guy hurt?" "It's not good. He was shot in the chest and lost a lot of blood. He's still in surgery." "Anything I can do?" "Actually there is. We got another video of them. This time it's somewhat clearer, and we want to see if you can see anything that may help." "I'm on my way." Steve hung up, and headed to the door. "On your way to where, Son?" "The precinct. There was another car jacking." "Here let me drive. I know I can't you out of going, and you surely don't need to be driving." ***************** The black car was situated across from the beach house. The two men inside listening to the radio. "Dude, this is getting way to public. You're getting too cocky for my taste. And now this guy that you shot. We're getting in too far over our heads." "Would you shut up. We are the last ones anybody would expect. We have a cover anyway-we've been working during each and every time the car jackings have happened." "But dude, we used out names during that attack to the cop. He's a good cop, and he will eventually get it together. Plus the last two hits have been in front of video cameras." "You think I'm not worried about that? I sure as hell wouldn't have gotten that car if I had known it was Sloan. And I didn't even recognize him until we opened up his wallet, and by then it was too late." "Why in the world did I agree to do this? Look, we've got to take care of Sloan." "I don't think he's going to be a problem right now." "What if he can ID us from the surveillance videos? You know they're going to call him in, and who knows what might happen. Do we really want to wait around and find out if he might be a problem?" "You're right. We do need to cover ourselves and take care of him now." Just then Mark's black car pulled onto the street. "Now I wonder where are they going? Were you serious about wanting to take care of him now?" "Sure, why?" He started the car, "Because now is as good as any time to get it done." He followed behind the car for a while. Soon they were on a street where few people were around. The driver situated his car on a road that ran perpendicular to the road Mark and Steve were traveling. "Get out," he told his partner. He then sat back a bit and waited for his light to turn red. He gunned the engine and was up to almost 45 mph when he had approached the intersection. He turned on the cruise control and jumped out of the car just before impact. He rolled for several seconds before coming to a stop on the sidewalk just as his speeding car crashed into car carrying Mark and Steve. The car's impact caused Mark and Steve's car to flip and hit a couple of parked cars that were parked on the road. Tires screeching, metal grinding, and glass breaking. And then silence-nothing but silence. "Now let's see how much help you can be." home | vs home | season one | season two | season three | join dmvs | e-mail us | guestbook |
