Summary: Steve and Jesse learn the truth about Lynda and Mandy.

[email protected]

Steve looked out at the beach from the deck of the beach house. It had been a week since the Mandy had been buried and he couldn't believe how much could change in a week. One day he was with the woman that he loved so much and the next thing he knew he was at her funeral.

Then it was time for him to go to her apartment and pack her things to send to her family that was if he could find them. He thought that he knew everything about her, but he knew that he really didn't know her at all.

Taking a deep breath he turned to look at the beach house. He was glad that his father wasn't at home just then. He needed time to think. He smiled when he heard a voice from behind him, "Hey Steve."

"Hi Jess, what are you up to today?"

"Just went for a walk on the beach. When I neared your house I noticed that you were standing on the deck and thought that I would come by to see how you are doing?" Jesse said as he leaned against the railing of the deck.

"I'm alright. I was just thinking."

"That was why I was walking on the beach. There is just something about the sound of the waves crashing on the shore that seems to make me feel a lot better." Jesse ran his fingers through his hair and went over to the table and sat down.

"I know what you mean." Steve walked over and took a seat across from the young doctor and then looked at his watch to see that it was time for dinner. "What do you say that we go out for dinner? Bob's will be opened back up tomorrow. We can go there... anything would be better than sitting all afternoon."

Jesse shook his head, "well, to be honest I'm not very hungry. What do you say that we go somewhere that you can get something to eat and I can get a good cup of coffee."

"Sounds good to me," Steve agreed as both men got to their feet and headed into the house.

Three Days Earlier, Mandy's Apartment

Steve, Mark and Jesse enter the apartment and looked around. Both Mark and Jesse had persuaded Steve to let them help so that he wouldn't be alone to face packing Mandy's things.

"So where do we start?" Jesse asked.

Steve looked at the empty box that the young doctor held, "I guess that you can start packing up her books."

Jesse followed Steve's glance at the bookshelf against the far wall of the apartment.

"Sure," Jesse said heading over to the book case.

Mark watched as his son head into Mandy's bedroom with a box.

He wondered if he could find her family to send her things to. He had realized just the day before that he really didn't know that much about the woman that used to live in this apartment. Sitting on the bed Steve looked around the room and smiled when he saw a picture of the two of them that was taken at the beach house.

Opening the box that he had carried into the room he took out some tissue paper and wrapped up the picture, but not before taking another look at it.

He took his time as he open the nightstand to start packing up the contents. He found that she had stored all her photos in that drawer and smiled. There were so many memories that they had shared. At the bottom of all the pictures were a folded paper, as he opened it to look at his eyes grew large, "what on earth?"

In front of him was the blue print of the funeral home that Lynda Mitchell had been at and X's where each explosive had been placed. He couldn't believe his eyes and hoped that Mandy had nothing to do with it.

As the day went on his hopes where dashed as they started to find evidence that proved that explosives had in fact been made there and that there was still an unused explosive in the apartment.

His mind started to ask questions that his heart wasn't ready to know the answers to and for him; his memories were dashed and made just a distant past. 'What was real?' He asked himself as he took out his cell phone and called his partner. No drought that this was the hardest call that he had ever made in his life.

Why had he not listened to his father, he knew that his father was always right and yet he choose to not listen to the one person that he could trust with is life.

He shook his head, 'no that wasn't true," he had Jesse and Amanda too...oh and Jesse he had introduced Jesse to Lynda because of Mandy... 'What if this had something to do with that? What if he was the cause for his friend's grief?'

He didn't want any of this to be true. Why was this happening? Just a few short weeks before they had both been happy with the two women that he thought that was perfect for him and his friend, but now... he hated to think about it.

Soon there was a knock at the door and his partner was there with a few other officers and his beloved Mandy's home was a crime scene. He couldn't stand to bear it as he watched Cheryl working with the other officers to find what they could there.

It seemed like time had came to a standstill and he was there alone, he knew that his father and Jesse was there also with him, but he was too...oh he didn't know how he felt anymore.

Soon Cheryl was coming to him with a small notebook in a plastic evidence bag, "is this Mandy's handwriting?"

Steve looked though the plastic and shook his head it was.

"This has detailed notes to how she had Lynda had planed and succeeded to destroy Bob's. It also goes on to say how she has taken orders from and unnamed person to kill 'Lynda'," she explained.

At that point Jesse came to her side, "what?"

"Sorry Jesse, but it looks like Mandy and Lynda was working together." Cheryl looked at her friends before her and her heart ached for them.

"Why?" Was all that Jesse could say.

Mark went to Steve's and Jesse's side, "I think we should get some fresh air and maybe go somewhere else."

"I have to get to the Hospital, I've got a shift coming up in a few hours," Jesse said as he headed for the door.

"Jess..." Mark tried to say, but it was of no good Jesse never stopped.

Steve put his hand on his father shoulder to stop him, "wait he needs a little time alone."

"I know," Mark turned to his son, "how are you doing?"

"How am I supposed to be doing? I just found out..." he shook his head and looked into his father's caring and loving eyes, "let's get out of here. I just can't stay here anymore."

Cheryl smiled at her partner not really sure what she should say, "Steve...I wish that this wasn't happening."

"I know, but I should have listened to you..." with that said he headed to the door with his father behind him. Mark stopped and turned back to Cheryl, "call us if you find anything.

"I will," she promised and watched Mark leave.

Present Time

Before Steve and Jesse could leave there was a knock at the door. Being closer to the door Jesse headed over and smiles when he saw Tess and Mary standing there.

"Hi ya, Jesse," Tess said going to him and giving him a hug. "Grandma called the hospital to talk to Mark and he said that Steve was going to be here alone all day so grandma made a picnic up. She made enough to feed a small army."

Jesse smiled, "did she now?"

Mary nodded, "well I'm sure that it is enough for all us what do you guys say to going out to the beach with me and that granddaughter of mine?"

"We'd love too," Steve smiled as he came to their side. "Thank you Mary, Tess."

"No need to thanks us, we think that world of you two boys you know that," Mary handed Steve the basket and Jesse the blanket, "well let's go for that picnic."

Day Before, Community General

Mark, Alex and Jesse sat in the doctor's lounge looking over several files, "I think that you are right for her," Alex spoke up looking at Jesse.

"Thanks, but how can I be sure about this. What if something happens to Mary am I ready for this?"

"Yes, you are beyond ready for this. Why are you thinking so hard on this before you answer Mary?" Mark asked as he watched his friend searching for answers.

"How can I be sure that I can raise Tess if..."

"Look Jess, Mary has a lot of faith in you and she wouldn't be asking you for this. I know that it is a big choice, but you are ready for this, I'm sure of that."

"Oh I know that, she is very kind to think about me for this. I'm going to tell her yes and it will be a pleasure to be around to help Tess and much as I can." He looked toward the door as Steve and Cheryl walked in.

Mark noted the frown on his son's face, "what is it?"

"Jess, we just searched Lynda's apartment and found a lot of proof against her, but there is something that I wanted for you to hear about first."

Jesse stood and headed over to Steve, "what?"

"Let's go for a walk." Steve suggested and the two friends headed out of the doctor's lounge.

Outside Hospital

Steve and Jesse headed over to a bench and took a seat, "just spill it Steve."

"Jess, she was having second thoughts. We sound a file that told everything in it. Our guess is it was like her own little diary. She was going to call off the wedding and tell you about everything. It was the last entry in the file."

Steve stood and looked down at his friend, "I know that she loved you. Even if it started out as a lie. Trust me I wish that I could find proof that Mandy cared for me like Lynda did for you."

Jesse just shook his head, "for what Steve?"

"To know that it wasn't all a lie," Steve knew that this was hard for both of them, but at least Jesse had this knowledge. What did he have, but the fact that Mandy wasn't the person he thought that she was?

"You know what; it all was a lie...so she had second thoughts. That has nothing to do with what she did. She lied to me through most of it."

"Yes most, but not all," Steve took a seat, "don't you see she most likely died because she wanted out. She wanted to be with you."

Tears ran freely down Jesse's face, "but why did she do this to begin with?"

"I don't know, but it will come out before long and we will find out who this partner of their was," Steve promised.

Jesse was always amazed at Steve, there he was with so much hurt and he was trying to make him see things clearly, "thanks."

"For what?"

"Just for being my friend," Jesse said as he got up and headed back into the hospital.

Present Day

The picnic was over Mary and Jesse watched as Steve and Tess played at the waters edge, "If you still want me to look after Tess if..."

Mary stopped and looked at the young doctor, "you mean that you will let me put you in my will as legal guardian if I should pass on?"

"If you still want me," Jesse smiled as he looked out at the young girl."

"Oh course I do," she laughed, "this is great thank you."

"It's me that should thank you."

Next Day Bob's

Bob's had been reopened for two hours when the three partner's got a chance to take a little break. They looked around to see how packed the place was and were just amazed, "wow can you believe this?" Mark asked.

"Well sure I do I mean this place is the best BBQ place in all of LA," Jesse said proudly.

Steve looked around, "not an empty seat for two hour, this has to be a record."

"For sure," Amanda piped up from behind the three men, "you three have been busy. I wish that I wasn't called out as the reopening was taking place."

"No problem, what was the big emergency?" Mark questioned.

"Well, there was a body found on the beach. Not far from your beach house. It was the body of Robin Miler." She explained.

"Miler, she was Lynda's boss," Jesse looked up and everyone could see the shock in his eyes. What happened?"

"She was shot three times at close range. She was dead after the first bullet hit her," Amanda told her friends as she took a seat at the bar.

Steve pulled out his cell phone and started dialing his partner, "I'm going to see if I can find anything out."

He got up and headed over to the end of the counter so that he could talk to his partner.

Jesse watched him move then looked at Amanda again, "so what can you tell us?"

"What I just did, there is a detective Roberts over the case," she explained.

"William Roberts?" Mark questioned.

"Yeah, I think that was his name." She noted the distant look on the Mark's face, "why?"

"He was an officer year's back before Steve made detective. He worked a case with Steve. It was one of the last cases that Steve worked before he was sent to were he is now with the LAPD as a detective."

He turned his attention to Steve who was still on the phone and wondered why Steve never mentioned Roberts was now working with him.

Steve hung up the phone and headed to his friends and father's side, "the case is going to be worked by Roberts and Cheryl and I'm now helping out on it," he looked at his father noting that his father's gaze never left him, "I should have told you about him being with homicide now."

"Yes you should have," Mark just couldn't believe that Roberts was still an officer.

Eleven Year's Earlier

Steve Sloan watched as William Roberts got into their squad car grinning from ear to ear, "you look mighty happy?"

"I had to see my uncle that's all," Robert's told him bluntly.

"This uncle must be one of a kind to make you smile like that," Steve chuckled.

"Oh he is trust me."

"So are you ready to go back to headquarters?" Steve asked.

"Yeah, but first I have to go by the bank. My uncle wants me to deposit some money for him," he pulled out a thick envelope and placed it on the seat next to him.

"Alright," Steve started the car, "where to?"

"Winsted Bank and Trust."

Steve turned the car around and headed for the for the bank. He glanced out the window and saw a young blond hair girl sitting on a bench by the corner of Roberts uncle's house and frowned she looked to be around 16 and was crying. He wondered what was wrong with her.

Present Time

Steve had remembered that girl for the first time in years and wondered why he couldn't remember her face and that his best friend was to have married her a few weeks back, that girl was 'Lynda Mitchell' or was pretending to be.

The phone rung behind the bar and Mark reached over to answer it, "BBQ Bob's."

"Is there a Mark Sloan there?" a man's voice asked.

"This is he," Mark answered cautiously.

"I'm Peter Watson, Carter Sweeny's attorney and he has asked for you to come visit him. Can that be arranged," he asked.

Mark was almost speechless as he heard the man's question, "why does he want to see me?"

"He has come across some information that he thinks that you should hear. I am not sure what that information is, but he seems to really want to meet with you soon."

"Tell him that I'll come to meet with him tomorrow," Mark told Watson not believing what he was agreeing to.

"Thank you Doctor Sloan, he will be very pleased to know that you will be coming to see him."

"I am sure that he is, just let him know that I will come, but I am bringing my son with me. I have no intention of meeting him alone." With that Mark hung up the phone.

Steve was by his father's side with a questioning look, "what was that about?"

"Seems that Carter Sweeny want me to come see him."

Both his friends and his son looked shocked, "what and you agreed?" Steve questioned.

"I plan to find out just what he wants," Mark told his son. "I have a feeling that it is nothing but trouble for all of us."
