Summary: Lynda Mitchell's funeral turns out deadly. Hearing the shots from his room, Steve was quick to run upstairs to find out what the problem was. As he went to his fathers side he noticed that Mark was knelling on the ground and looked down to see Lynda's body, "what happened?" "She's dead son," Mark explained. "She came to the door and wanted to talk to us and the next thing I knew there were shots being fired and she fell to the ground." Steve headed over to the phone in the living room and started to call the station and for the coroner's office to send someone over. He looked over to his father and wondered about Jesse...what were they going to tell him about what happened here tonight if they didn't truly understand it themselves. After everyone was called he remembered that he and Mark were supposed to be over at Jesse's for a bachelor party. He decided to drive over to talk to his friend face to face after his partner and other officers got to the beach house so he could be certain that his father would be safe. Later, Jesse's Apartment Jesse sat in his apartment looking at his watch wondering where Mark and Steve where at. Jesse smiled as he remembered when he had told Steve in no uncertain terms that he wasn't going to have a crazy bachelor party, that he just wanted to spend the time with his friends watching a old moving and talking. Steve hadn't been to happy with that idea, but knew that if Jesse wanted simple then simple was what he was going to get. There was a knock at the door and Jesse headed over to it and opening it saying at the same time, "what took you guys so long...the movie is about to start..." He stopped dead in this tracks when he saw his best friend standing before him with a grim look on his face, "what's going on?" Steve looked up at the young doctor and sighed, "Can I come in?" "Sure," Jesse moved to the side to let his friend enter and then closed the door and turned to Steve, "what's wrong?" "I think that we should have a seat first," Steve started. "Why don't you just go ahead and tell me what's going on...what is it?" Steve looked at his friend and took in a deep breath, "Jess, I don't know how to tell you, but..." before Steve could go any further the phone started to ring and Jesse headed over to answer it, "Jesse Travis." "Oh Jesse, thank God you're there," Mandy said franticly on the other end of the line. "Mandy, what's wrong?" "I just got to the beach house and when I saw Amanda standing over Lynda's body...I just had to call you," she said crying uncontrollably. All the color drained from Jesse's face as he sat down on the couch, "what?" "Oh I thought you knew, they said that Steve was going to tell you...I'm so sorry to break this to you like..." she said as she started to sob more. Jesse let the phone drop from his hands as Steve rushed to his side, "Jess?" "It can't be true...we're supposed to be getting married tomorrow and now she's..." Jesse looked up at his friend with pleading eyes, "tell me it's not true." Steve picked up the phone and put it on the receiver not caring who was on the other end he had to be here for his friend, "I wish that I could." "No, no, no, it's not true. She's not dead she is going to marry me tomorrow," Jesse said sternly as he stood up and headed to his bedroom, "I need for you to leave." Steve went to Jesse stopping the young man by placing a hand on his shoulder, "Jess please." "I said... I need to be alone," Jesse shouted moving away from his friend and heading into his bedroom and slamming the door, then locking it. Steve stared at the door and wondered what he should do. He was worried about Jesse and had to do something, anything to help his friend who was in so much pain. Pulling out his cell phone he dialed his father for a little help. Little Later Mark knocked on the door of Jesse's apartment and was surprised that the door opened just a second after his first knock. He looked at his son who looked very worried, "Thank God you're here dad." "How is he?" Mark asked with a shaky voice. "He is still in his room, I tried to get him to open his door, but he keeps asking me to leave." Mark squeezed his son shoulder to give him a little strength as he headed toward the young doctor's bedroom door "let me try." "Thanks Dad." Mark nodded as he knocked on Jesse's door, "Jess, it's Mark, can I come in?" "Please will you leave me alone?" Jesse asked through sobs. "Not this time Jess, I need you to open the door. We are very worried about you," Mark said with a soothing voice. After a few moments of silence the door finally opened and Jesse walked back over to his bed and sat down. Mark looked over to his son before he entered the room, "can you give us a few minutes?" Steve nodded and watched his father go into the bedroom and then headed over to the couch. In Jesse's bedroom, Mark took a seat next to Jesse and placed a hand on his shoulder, "want to talk about it?" Jesse looked up with red eyes and just shook his head, "she's dead." "I know, but you have to let us help you with everything. You know that we will be here if you need us, no matter what," Mark assured him. "Why did this have to happen? Why can't I just find a little happiness? I mean look at how things turned out with Susan," he pointed out as even more tears slid down his face. "You loved Lynda a lot and it's going to take a long time to get use to her not being with you. I promise that Steve, Amanda and I will be here to help you so please come to use and don't shut us out." "Why didn't you like her Mark?" Jesse asked as his eyes locked with his older friend. Mark wished that there were something that he could say to make Jesse feel better about everything and his last questioned broke his heart. "Oh Jess, I wish that I could tell you something new. I can tell you that I wish that none of this had to of happened." "She was really special Mark, I know that she was the one," Jesse explained between his sobs. "I'm glad that you found that in her. I know that I had that kind of love once with Steve's mother and well, it is hard when a person like that leaves your life, but know that she loved you too." "She really did, we would have been happy together." "I know that you would have, what do you say that we get you too bed you are going to need your rest for tomorrow." "No, I have to see her," Jesse pleaded. "I know that you want to, but I think that maybe we should..." "No," Jesse shouted, "I have to see her and if you don't take me to her I will go there myself." "Ok, but after that I think that we need to come back here," Mark suggested. "Mark...I don't want to be alone tonight. Can I go back to the beach house with you and Steve?" Jesse asked looking more like a kid than an adult. "I think that maybe we should come back here...She was...the beach house it not a good idea. How about I stay here on the couch tonight?" "I can't ask you to do that..." "I want to, besides I think that I could use a nice rest on your comfy couch it will remind me of when I was first a doctor...sorta like you and the couch in the doctor's lounge." "Thanks Mark." Two Days Later, The Funeral Amanda stood next to Jesse as he looked into the casket of his beloved Lynda. He closed his eyes thinking about the times that the two of them spent on the beach just talking and getting to really know each other. Wrapping her arms around her friend Amanda gave a weak smile to him, "let's take our seat." "I can't do this..." Jesse whispered looking once more in the casket. "I'll be with you the whole time," she assured him as they turned to take their seats. Taking a deep breath as he sat down Jesse watched as Mark, Steve, Mandy and Alex came in to take a seat on the same row as Jesse. The next person to walk into the church surprised the young doctor. He watched as the man went to take the seat right behind his and turned to greet him with grateful eyes, "thanks you for coming." "I'm so sorry that this happened to you son," Dane Travis said placing a comforting hand on Jesse's shoulder. "Oh Dad..." Jesse said as there was several explosions that rocked the room. Same Time, Prison, Sweeny's Cell Carter Sweeny laid in the cot in his cell, when the cell door opened and Mike Winston a prison guard came in and stood over him. Carter opened one eye and looked up and smiles, "Is it done?" "Yes, I just got the call, it went as planed." "Good, now we let things play out. There'll be no one to know that I had anything to do with this," Carter smugly grinned and closed his eyes again as the guard left the cell. Funeral Lying on the ground where she was knocked Cheryl shook her head as she tried to clear the cobwebs that that threatened to plunge her into unconsciousness. She tried to focus as she looked over at the funeral home before her, "oh no." She pulled out her cell phone and started dialing for help. Inside the Funeral Home Amanda opened her eyes and turned her head to look to her side where Jesse had sat a moment before. She looked at her friend who was unconscious and slowly raised her hand to check for a pulse. She was relieved to find that there was one no matter how weak. "Jess, can you hear me?" She asked as she tried to focus on him. She them noticed Alex sitting beside Jesse was starting to stir. Slowly she tried to stand up and was relieved to find that she could. She reached over and put and hand on Alex's shoulder, "hey." Alex opened his eyes and looked at her, "wh...what happened?" "I'm not sure, but..." she stopped as she scanned the room. Beside her on the right Steve, Mark and Mandy were lying on the floor. She knew just by looking at Mandy that she was dead. There was piece of debris that was stuck into the middle of her chest. Amanda knelt down and checked both Mark and Steve for a pulse and found one. "Amanda?" Alex said with a panic field voice. The pathologist looked over at her friend and noted how pale he looked, "Alex?" "I..." he started to say as his head went to the side and he passed out. Amanda checked for a pulse and then turned her attention to the others that were in the room with her. Outside Cheryl was looking around desperately to find a way inside the building. She knew that she had to do something to help her partner and friends to get out of the building. She heard the emergency vehicles heading to the Funeral Home, but she kept looking for a way to get in and was rewarded when she found a window that would allow her to get in. After she was in Cheryl looked around the room to find that it was the room next to where the service was to be held. She then glanced over to the door and found a large pile of debris and sighed but went to the pile and started to move the debris one piece at a time. She soon had the door open pleased to see that the door heading into the Service Hall was open and she rushed over to it to find only one person up and moving, "Amanda?" She called out as she went to her friend. Looking up from where she was leaning over Dane Travis, Amanda was relieved to see someone who was not unconscious, "Cheryl is there a way to get these people out of here?" "I came through a window, but I heard the Emergence workers as I came in, so it won't be long before they're in." She looked around the room to see about a dozen people in the room, have you checked everyone?" "Yes, everyone seems to be fairing alright, except for two that were killed in the explosion. We are just going to have to wait and see what happens, we were lucky that everyone was close to the center of the room. The explosives seemed to me stashed around the walls." "What do you want me to so?" Cheryl asked as she knelt next to a young lady that was starting to stir. Amanda went to her side and knelt beside her friend. Opening her eyes, Stacy Hillocks looked up at the two women, "what happened?" "There was an explosion," Amanda explained, "how are you feeling?" "Like a ton of bricks hit me...my right arm hurts," she said as she tried to move it, but instead only cried out in pain. "Easy, you have a broken arm. I want you to just lay still and they'll be someone in soon to help us," Cheryl said in a soothing voice. "Thanks," the lady smiled. "You're welcome." "Amanda?" A voice from behind them said in a weak voice. Amanda turned to see Mark trying to sit up, "Easy, you have a large bump on the head." "I figured I had a mild concussion, was anyone else hurt. I just checked on Steve he seems to be alright, but..." "Mandy is dead," Amanda finished the sentence for Mark. "Yes," he shook his head and wished that he hadn't. His head was spinning and he felt nauseous. "Mark, are you alright?" Amanda asked as she went to his side. "Yeah I'm fine I guess that I should know better than to shake my head like that... after all I have had to tell my son more times that once now to do that," Mark said with sad with a heavy heart. Mark looked at her smelling the air, "smoke." Cheryl came to their side, "you're right. Must be a fire somewhere, we have to get these people out of there some way." "What do you think that we should do, Mark is in no shape to help and I'm not sure if we can get them out by ourselves." Amanda looked around to see the right wall smoking, "I guess that we have to try." "There is always the way that I came in. We can take one person at a time," she explained as she went to the nearest person, "come on Amanda lets get Steve out of here first." Mark watched as Cheryl went to one side of Steve and Amanda on the other side. They hoisted Steve up so they could drag to the entrance escape. "Be careful." "We will," Amanda promised as they started toward the door. As they neared the end of the room they hear a man voice, "over here. We almost have this doorway cleared." Cheryl looked at where two men were trying to clear a beam that blocked the exit, "are we ever glad to see you," she smiled as she and Amanda carefully lowered Steve to the floor. Maybe we can help you." "That would be great," one of them men looked over to her as Amanda noticed that his left arm was bleeding heavily. There are some Emergency workers working on the other side, but they can't get in unless we move this beam out of the way." "Then let's move it fast there is a fire back there," she told them. "We smelled the smoke and have been trying to move this faster, but I'm afraid that I can't do much with this arm." The four worked fast and with the extra help were able to push the beam to the side enough to open the door and the EMT's and firemen were heading into the building. Captain Robert Wiseman looked at both Amanda and Cheryl as two firemen carried Steve out, "you two get out of here and we'll get the rest out." Cheryl shook her head, "no, I'm going to help you get these people out of here," she told him in no certain terms. "I think that it would be wiser if you get checked out and we have plenty of people to get these people out, so I am not asking you I am telling you to back off." Amanda put her hand on her shoulder, "let's let them do their job," she said as she watched a dozen firefighters enter the building, "looks like they have this covered. "Amanda, we have to help Mark and the others." "They're getting everyone out," They heard someone say from out side and Captain Newman came to where the two women stood, "get out and that is an order." "Yes Sir," Cheryl spoke in an angry voice as she exited the building with Amanda at her side. Newman stopped the detective as she went past him, "I know that this isn't easy for you to walk away from, but it is covered by others." "I know Sir," with that she left. Cheryl pulled Amanda to the side when she got out, "Amanda we have to get back in there." "You heard Newman; you go back in there..." "I know what will happen if the captain catches me, but I have to go back. Steve will never forgive me if anything happens to his father," she explained to Amanda as she saw the gurney that Steve was lying on and noticed that he was waking up. Both Cheryl and Amanda went over to where Steve was trying to sit up on the gurney, "Steve, what do you think that you are doing?" Amanda asked. "I need to get up and find my father and Mandy..." He stopped when Amanda pushed him back down, "you and Cheryl sure make great partners...you sound enough alike." "I take that as a compliment," Cheryl said then turned her attention to Steve, "your father looked like he was alright a light concussion he guessed, but..." "But what?" Steve asked. "Mandy didn't make it..." Amanda said putting her hand on his shoulder watching as he looked at her in shock.
