Millbrook's Foster Home Steve and Cheryl sat in his car in complete silence. Cheryl looked over at her partner every once in a while wishing that he would just say something. She knew that he was mad at him for doing a background check on his girlfriend, but still this was ridiculous. "Steve, will you just talk to me?" Steve had been thinking about how he was going to tell Tess that her mother was dead when he heard his partners words, "sorry was thinking about Tess." Cheryl knew that this was going to be hard. She never got a chance to see the little girl, but her heart went out to her, "yeah." "Cheryl she just lost her sister and now I have to tell her that her mother is dead too. I can't see why this is happening to someone so young," Steve said as he still thought up the right words to say when they entered the Foster Home. "Hey, I will be with you all the way, Partner," Cheryl assured him. "Thanks...I guess we should go on in and tell her." "Yeah, we should," Cheryl agreed as they both got out of the car. They went inside and met with Anne Rowe they followed her up to the room that Tess was using. Both Steve and Cheryl looked in to see the little girl on the bed her head on the pillow as she looked up at the ceiling. Steve let his partner enter the room first and he followed her to the bed that Tess was lying on, "hey," Steve said to break the silence. Tess moved her little face so that she could see Steve, "you came to see me...did anyone find my mommy yet?" She asked with pleading eyes that were breaking both Steve's and Cheryl's hearts. Steve shook his head, "yeah...we found her and that is what we are here to talk to you about." The little girl looked at the woman that she hadn't met before, "who are you?" Cheryl smiled, "I'm Steve's partner...Cheryl," she explained. "Oh...can you please tell me when my mom is coming to pick me up. I don't want to stay here any more." Cheryl looked at her partner and sighed. This was going to be harder than she thought it would be. "Tess, when we found your mother...she was..." he found the next words that he had to say, the hardest thing that he had ever had to say in his life, "I'm sorry but she was...dead." Tess stared at Steve with a blank face... "No...you take that back. My momma is coming back to pick me up," she then turned her whole body to look in the other direction. She didn't ever want to see Steve again. Steve's eyes glossed over with unshed tears as he looked down at Tess. Cheryl looked from the little girl to Steve and placed a hand on her partner's shoulder as she went closer to the bed and sat down, "Tess." "No...I want you both to go away," Tess shouted. "Honey look, I know that this isn't easy for you to hear, but we are here to help you." Cheryl knew that her words weren't going to help the little girl feel better, but she had to try something." "That isn't true...no one wants to help me," she cried, "I don't want you here please go away..." Anne stepped into the room, "I think that it is best if you two give me some time with her." Cheryl stood up and she and Steve headed for the door. Steve turned to look at Anne, "if you need anything you call me." "I will," Anne assured him. Outside in Steve's Car Steve started the car as soon as he got behind the wheel and waited for his partner to get in her seatbelt before he took off. He had to put some distance between him and the case for just a little while, "you want a late lunch?" Cheryl looked out the window as they headed towards the beach house, "yeah, sounds good. I see that we are headed toward your place." Steve just shook his head, "I just need a few minutes away from everything about this case, and, well I figured that half an hour to an hour for lunch at home would be better than nothing." "Hey, I never complain when someone wants to cook for me," she tried to tease to lighten the mood a little. "Who said I was cooking?" he asked. Cheryl knew that Steve was having a hard time with what had just happened and wanted to get him to talk to her, "want to tell me about it?" "About what?" "What's bothering you...come on I am here if you want to talk," she offered. "Talk...alright, if you want to talk we'll talk," he said angrily. Cheryl noted how harshly he had spoken and just looked at him waiting for him to go on. "You went along with my father and had a background check on Mandy? Why is that you felt that you had to do that?" He asked as he calmed down a little knowing that it really wasn't her fault, his father could be really persuading. "I wanted to tell you about that...but I though it was best if your father explained it," she told him. "I know that my father can be good at getting people to help him out with things, but Mandy is harmless." Cheryl shook her head. She knew that what she had to say wasn't going to help matters, "Steve, I agree with your father." Steve glanced over to where his partner sat just before he pulled the car to the side of the road. As he put the vehicle into park he turned so that he could face her, "why is that?" "She shook her head, "it's just a feeling that I had every since the first time I met her." "Well if it's a feeling...I know that you have had time to read the report so...come on what did it say?" He asked knowing all too well what it said from his phone call the night before. "It said nothing..." she said looked at him sadly. "Nothing and you still agree with my father? Why on earth couldn't you come to me with this?" He asked sadly. "You're right I should have...but it's too late to turn back time now," she retorted. "You're right it is...but I am grateful that you and my dad were looking out for me. Next time however...I want you to come to me with it instead of going behind my back," he told her as he put the car in gear and started back down the road. "I will," she assured him. Same Time at the Beach House Mark and Jesse sat on the deck looking out at the ocean, "thanks for inviting me over Mark." "No problem. You know Amanda is coming over after work. The boys are at a friend's house tonight and I invited her over for dinner. Would you care to join us?" Mark asked. "Hey sure," he said his face lighting up. "So I can see that you are feeling better," Mark said looking at his friend. He had been worried about him earlier that morning, but it seemed that he was seeing things more clearly. "Yeah...I just hope that Steve is able to find Tess's mother," he said in a low whisper. "I'm sure that he will." A few minutes later Steve and Cheryl entered the house and went straight for the kitchen. Steve opened the refrigerator and got out the things to make him and his partner a sandwich. Cheryl went to the cabinet that she knew contained the plates and got two out. She then went to her partner's side and helped him open everything up, "so where do we go after this?" Steve looked up at his partner, "We are going to find Tess's grandparent's and tell them what has happened." "Sounds like a plan," she smiled at him. Mark and Jess came in from the deck after hearing someone in the kitchen to meet up with Cheryl and Steve. "Did you find her mother?" Jesse asked. Steve shook his head, "yeah, but I'm afraid that she was dead." Jesse's face went pale, "oh no." Before Steve could say anything more his cell phone started to ring. He pulled it out and placed it to his ear, "Sloan...yeah. Thanks for letting me know. Bring him in, we are on our way." Looking over to his partner he told her, "someone fitting George Kirkland description has just been picked up, but his ID says that he is Paul Mackenzie." "Let's go then, and find out just who they have in custody," she said following Steve out the door. Police Station Steve and Cheryl headed over to Officer Michael Willstead as Steve asked, "Where is he?" Michael looked up from his desk to Steve, "he's in holding."" The three of them headed back to holding and Steve looked at he man in the cell with his back turned to them. "Kirkland?" Steve asked as he watched the man turn to face them. He saw that the man could be George's twin if it wasn't for about fifty pounds and the fact that he had blue eyes instead of brown. The man got to his feet and headed over to the cell door and sighed, "How many times do I have to tell you, I'm not Kirkland." Steve looked over at Willstead and nodded, "it's not him." Cheryl looked at Willstead and back to Steve, "so where too now?" "We have to find out where Tess's grandparents are," he told her as they both left the holding area to go to their desks. After looking Mary and Joe Richardson up on the computer Cheryl printed out the address and headed over to Steve's desk, "I've got their address let's see if we can find them." Steve got up and headed with her out the door. Steve looked at his watch as Cheryl drove to the Richardson's home, "I hope that we can find them so Tess can have some family." Richardson's Neighbor's House After spending ten minutes at the Richardson's home and getting no answer at the door Steve and Cheryl decided to talk to their neighbor's. Cheryl knocked on the home of Allen Robert's and waited for them to answer it, while Steve stood to the side talking to the Chief on his cell phone. She watched as her partner put the phone away and came to stand beside her, "Newman said that he had just checked in with the man at Kirkland's apartment building he still hasn't showed up." Cheryl was about to say something just before the front door opened and an elderly man stared at them, "may I help you?" Both Steve and Cheryl showed him their badges as Cheryl asked, "LAPD, can we ask you a few questions about your neighbors?" He nodded as he opened the door wider for them to enter his home, "what kind of questions?" "Can you tell me where they are?" Steve asked. Allen just looked at Steve for a moment before he started talking, "well, they're not at home." "No sir, do you know where they are?" Steve asked again. "They went fishing yesterday. They sometime can be gone for three days," Allen told them as he headed over to his chair, "you two want to have a seat?" The partner's followed and sat down across from him, "do you know where they could be fishing at?" Allen shook his head, "yeah, they stay with a friend... Bill Peterson and they fish at his cabin. I've never been there so I can't tell you where it is though." After talking to Allen for a few more minutes they thanked him and said their goodbyes. Steve's Car Cheryl had her cell phone out calling in Peterson's name to find out his address. After writing it down in her notepad she put her phone away. "We have located Peterson's cabin on the Klamath River. The Chief is getting the local police to tell the Richardson's." Steve nodded as he looked at how dark it was and then gazed at the clock on the dashboard to see what time it was, "We had better call it a day. I want to be up early in the morning working on this case. "Sounds good, can you drop me off at the station so that I can pick up my car?" she asked. "Sure, I want to pick up my truck anyway," he told her never taking his eyes off the road. Next Morning Community General Mark entered the doctor's lounge and saw Jesse with his head down on the table, "morning, Jess." Slowly the young doctor lifted his head and looked at Mark, "hi Mark." Looking at the coffee pot Mark noticed that there was no coffee in it, "I'm making some coffee want some?" Nodding as he laid his head back down Jesse mumbled, "That would be great." Chuckling Mark shook his head, "I can see that you need to wake up this morning. What time did you start?" Jesse lifted his head up enough to look at his watch, "at six." "Was it that busy for you to be this tired after just working..." Mark looking at his watch, "an hour?" "Not busy, boring," Jesse retorted. "I see, then I better make you several pots of coffee to start your day and make them slow," Mark teased. "Funny Mark." Jesse then pulled his head up and stood to walk over to where his friend stood, "Mark can I get you to do something with me?" Mark saw the serious look on his friend's eyes and then placed a hand on Jesse's shoulder, "sure, what is it?" "I want to go see Tess, but really would like it if you would go with me?" "I would love to go with you...besides I would love to meet her myself," Mark assured his friend. "We will go after our shifts this afternoon." Smiling gratefully Jesse said, "Thanks." Police Station Steve and Cheryl sat at their desks when Captain Newman came toward them with a man and woman, "Steve...Cheryl this is Mary and Joe Richardson, Tess's grandparents. They just got here and I would like for you to take them to their granddaughter." The partners stood up and headed over to the Richardson's, "we are very sorry for your loss," Cheryl said reaching out a hand which Mary took and squeezed. "Thank you two so much for looking after Tess for us...I know that you have been working hard to find George..." Mary said as tears filled her eyes. Steve reached to his desk grabbing some tissues and handed it to her, "let's get you to your granddaughter. I know that she will be pleased to see you." Joe shook his head, "thank you. We really want to see her as soon as we can. I have missed my family so much and now that she is all that we have left we want to make sure that she is safe and where she belongs." Millbrook's Foster Home Anne sat in the backyard swing with Tess and the chair slowly went back and forth. Tess tensed as she heard a voice from beside them. "Excuse me I want to see my daughter," George said harshly as he pointed his gun at Anne. Looking up at the man Anne's eyes widened with fear, "you can't be here." Cocking the gun George smiled evilly, "this says differently." Tess swallowed hard as she looked at her father, "no," she said in a low whisper. Coming over to his daughter's side, George yanked her to her feet, "its time for you to come with me girl." Anna went to stand, but stopped when George put his gun to her face, "don't even try to stop me or you're dead, you hear me?" Shaking her head Anne backed away slowly, "please, don't take her from here." "She's my daughter and she belongs with me," he then looked sternly at Tess, "right?" The little girl fearfully shook her head, "ye...yes, Daddy." Anne watched them leave and headed straight for the phone to call for help. Few Minutes Later, Steve's Car Cheryl's phone started to ring and she quickly answered it, "Banks...when did this happen? We are on our way...thanks for giving us a call." Steve glanced over to his partner, "what is it?" "George, just went to the foster home and took Tess," she said sadly. "Oh God No," Mary cried out from the back seat. Cheryl turned to face her and Joe saying the only think that came to mind, "sorry." Steve cut the siren on and headed for the foster home. Millbrook's Foster Home She went straight to where the two partners stood, "I'm sorry...I couldn't stop him...he had a gun and...and..." she trailed off. Cheryl looked at Anne and brought her to the side, "come on...I'll take your statement in private so that you won't have to be around too many people." "Thanks," Anne said truly grateful. She didn't know how much more her nerves could take. Later, Amanda's Path Lab Steve walked into see Amanda seated at her desk reading over a file, "hey." Amanda jumped not knowing that anyone was in the room with her, "Steve Sloan...you scared me half to death." Steve smiled sympathetically, "sorry. Do you have Rachel Kirkland's file ready?" Picking up a file folder she handed it to Steve, "no surprise, she was beaten to death." Steve read through it and then looked up at Amanda, "cause of death a blow to her right temple?" Shaking her head Amanda went to explain, "Whatever she was hit with was blunt." Looking back down, he closed the folder, "thanks, Amanda." "No problem." Jesse's Car After hearing about Tess, Jesse told Mark that he was just going to head home and go to bed. He hadn't got much sleep the night before and just needed to rest. He was half way home when his cell phone started to ring. Pulling it from his pocket he brought it to his ear, "hello." A harsh voice started to speak, "Travis...you will pay for what you did to my little girl and butting in where you aren't wanted." Jesse knew it was George Kirkland as he listened to the man speak, "how did you get this number?" He asked but before he could get the words out the line went dead. Jesse was quick to call Steve telling him what had
just happened and wasn't surprised when Steve told him that he was on his way to his
apartment." Few Minutes Later, Jesse's Apartment Jesse unlocked and opened his door and entered his apartment with out even looking up from the mail that he carried. As he closed the door he could hear the sound of a gun cocking from behind him and he froze where he stood. "Travis," George shouted, "it's about time that you got here." Jesse turned slowly to be face to face with George. He let his eyes gaze to the couch where Tess sat scared, "what do you want?" "You are dead for killing my little girl," the man spat out. "Look, I had nothing to do with that," Jesse told George as he let his eyes look at the gun in his face. "You were the one that stuck you nose into my business. It is your fault that she is dead," he shouted. Tess looked at Jesse and shook her head, "no Daddy...please don't hurt him...please." Jesse's heart sank hearing the little girls plead, "if you are going to kill me please let her leave. She already had to face the fact that her sister and mother are dead. Please let her leave." "Shut up," Kirkland warned. Jesse knew that he had to buy time until Steve got there, "you know that she doesn't need to witness this." George let his face wander to his daughter then looked back at Jesse, "alright. She can go back to our apartment." Jesse closed his eyes thankful that George had a little decency left. George looked at his daughter, "get out of here and you had better go to our apartment...you hear me?" Shaking her head yes, the little girl ran to the door as he father forced Jesse away from it. As the door closed behind her Tess took off running down the hall only to run into Steve. Steve knelt down to her, "Tess, what's wrong?" She started to cry, "Daddy is going to kill him...Please can you help?" she pleaded. Steve looked at he little girl, "go out of the building. My partner is in the car that is parked right at the door. I want you to tell her that we need backup and tell her what you just told me. Tess shook her head and took off running once more. In Jesse's Apartment George pushed Jesse to the floor and he pointed his gun at he doctor and smiled, "I'll see you on the other side, Doc." At that moment the door was knocked opened and Steve shouted, "Put the gun away, Kirkland." Laughing out loud George smirked, "go ahead shoot me but I am going to make sure Travis dies for killing my little girl." He started to pull the trigger, but Steve was faster and Kirkland fell to the floor. Jesse closed his eyes for a moment and then looked up at Steve who was checking George's pulse and shook his head indicating that he was dead. That Night at the Beach House Jesse walked out onto the deck where Tess stood singing a song as she looked up at the Heavens. He listened to the words and his heart broke. Through the wind and the rain She then said after she stopped singing, "I'm going to be alright with Grandma and Grandpa...I love you Momma...Marybeth..." Jesse spoke up so that Tess knew that he was there, "hey." The little girl turned to face him, "hey." "Mind if I join you?" he asked coming to her side. She shook her head and then looking back up at he stars, "you think that momma and Marybeth went to heaven?" "Yeah, I do," Jesse said hugging her. From the house Mary watched and turned to Mark, "do you think that your son and Doctor Travis would mind coming to see Tess?" "I would love to see someone trying to stop then," Mark said looked out at Jesse and Tess. The End Note: The song Concrete Angel is by Martina McBride,
