Summary: Bettino escapes from prison after being sent there by Steve and the gang. Another chapter of Vanishing Act.

Mark entered Community General, humming the tune to the song that was playing on the radio. He headed to his office and checked his messages then sat at his desk looking at all the memories that filled the room. He picked up a picture that sat on his desk looking at the little boy wishing that Steve were still that young. Then a quick smile came to his face as he remembered the day it was taken.

Steve was ten years old and had just his first game of baseball for the season. He hit a homerun and was the hero of the game. He would never forget the words that his son told him after the game, "hey, Dad, did you see? We won and it was because of you showing me all you know about baseball."

"Steve, you were the one that hit the homerun not me," he assured his son as he gave him a hug.

"I know, Dad, but you were there for me," his blue eyes stared at his father. He was truly happy now he was the reason their team won.

Mark was brought back to the present by the sound of his phone ringing. He looked at it then reached down to pick up the receiver, "Doctor Mark Sloan."

"Doctor Sloan, this is William Pierson and I'm sorry to tell you this, but your son was just shot."

"WHAT!" Mark cried out as the words started to sink in. "Where is he? Is he alright?"

"I can't answer all your questions. I know that he wasn't looking so great a few minutes ago," The officer told him.

"Is he being taken to Community General?" Mark asked as he stood up from his desk.

"They called an ambulance but I'm not sure where they are taking him," the officer informed him.

"Where are you and I will meet you there," he said bluntly.

"134 Wilmore Road."

"I can be there in..." he looked at his watch, "...ten minutes. He hung up the phone as he rushed to the door and headed out of the hospital and into the parking structure. He reached his car and was unlocking the door when someone hit him hard with something knocking him to the ground unconscious.

****

Jesse Travis laid in his bed sleeping peacefully when he head the sound of his phone ringing. He opened his eyes as he looked over at the clock and waited a moment before the time came into focus. He then reached over for the phone, "Hello."

"Doctor Travis, this is Nurse Ramos, Doctor Bentley said to call you to let you know that you need to get to Community General quick."

Sitting up in his bed he asked, "What's the matter?"

"Its Doctor Sloan he was brought in a few minutes ago...Doctor Travis it doesn't look good," she told him through the tears.

"Emma, I'll be there in a few minutes," he told her as he got out of bed. Soon he was getting dressed and heading to the door in a hurry. As he got to his car he was stopped when he heard his name called out.

"Travis, long time no see..."

Jesse could fill the fear and panic fill within him as he turned to see Antonio Bettino standing behind him pointing a gun at him, "I thought..."

"What? Did you think that prison could hold me?" Bettino asked laughing that same evil laugh that Jesse had learned to hate. "Come on Travis, look on the bright side there is nothing wrong with Sloan."

"What do you want?" Jesse asked trying not to let his fear show in his voice.

"You in your car and driving," Bettino ordered.

Jesse looked at the gun that Bettino held on him and unlocked his door. He turned to face Bettino but was met with a blow to the headed that sent him to the ground unconscious.

"I think it is best if I drive," Bettino said as he picked Jesse up bringing him around to the passenger seat of the car.

****

Mark started to stir as he looked around he found that he was not alone in the room, "Jesse?"

He staggered to his friend's side to find him face down and unconscious. He turned Jesse over and checked for a pulse and was relieve when he found one, "come on Jess, wake up."

Getting no response he sat next to Jesse hoping, that he would wake up soon.

Soon the door to the room that they were in was unlocked and a man entered, "Antonio Bettino!."

"That's right Doctor Sloan, I'm out of prison and am here to kill you, Doctor Travis and...let's not forget your son."

Pointing his gun at Mark he ordered, "get over here. It's time for you to get a new room."

"I'm not leaving without Jesse," Mark looked straight into Bettino's eyes.

Cocking his gun he headed over to where the young doctor lay putting the barrel to Jesse's temple, "you will or he's a dead man."

Mark just looked at the man that held him and Jesse captive not saying a word simply nodding.

"Don't worry, you won't be to far away from your dear friend," Bettino bellowed angrily.

"How did you get out?" Mark asked.

Bettino just laughed, "Alright if you must know." Bettino snapped out as he started telling the story.

Two Days Earlier

An Officer roughly pushed Antonio Bettino toward the prison bus, "well, smart guy I wish that I could say that I am sorry to see you go, but to be honest it's about time."

"You make be feel so special Officer Peterson," Bettino smugly stated.

As he started on the bus Peterson cuffed Bettino to his seat, "now all I have to do is deliver you."

"I'm glad you can come along for the ride Peterson." He then looked over to another prisoner and smiled.

They were halfway to their destination when the tire blew out on the bus, "Oh great," the driver shouted in frustration.

"What's going on?" Peterson asked looked out side of the bus to see that they were surrounded by woodlands. "You go check it out I will stay here and watch the prisoners."

"Alright," The driver got off the bus looked at the front passenger side tire, ""ill have it fixed in no..."

The sound of guns being fired at the bus filled the air. Peterson watched in horror as the driver was shot several time.

"Alright Guard, open up the door," a man shouted as he and a dozen other men came out of the woods.

Peterson looked around to see if there were anything that he could do, but found that it was no good he was trapped.

The door was soon forced open and three men came aboard, "I thought I told you to open up!" the man cried out as he filled Peterson's body with lead.

"What took you so long?" Bettino teased.

"Antonio my dear cousin, it's been a long time," the man said as he picked up the keys from Peterson's body and uncuffed all the prisoners.

"I've missed you Rich," Bettino gave the man a hearty handshake, "well, let's get out of here."

"I agree cousin," Rich said as several vans pulled up beside the bus.

Present Time

Mark listened to Bettino brag about escaping from the prison van. Mark closed his eyes asking himself why they hadn't been informed.

"Let's get you to your new room, shall we," He then motioned for Mark to open the door.

****

Steve and Cheryl pulled in front of an apartment building to see that there are already several patrol cars there.

"What do we have?" Steve asked as he showed an officer as he came to the man's side.

"Two bodies, looks to be mother and daughter," the officer explained as they headed up to the murder scene.

Entering the apartment both Steve and Cheryl headed to the body noticing that Amanda was already examining the body. "What can you tell us Amanda?"

"They were both shot execution style," Amanda explained as she stood next to her friend. "She was a nurse in the ER at Community General," she said sadly.

Steve knelt down by the body and uncovered the woman head, "Emma Ramos."

Amanda knelt beside Steve, "her daughter, Laura, was found in her room shot the same manner."

Steve noticed that she was holding the receiver of her phone in her right hand, "she was using the phone when she was killed?"

"That's what it looks like," Cheryl said looking at her partner, "let's see who the last person she called was."

Pulling a set of gloves out of his pocket, Steve pressed redial.

After a moment an answering machine started playing, "You have reached the number of Jesse Travis. Sorry I'm not home at the moment..."

Steve hung up the phone and looked at Amanda, "she called Jesse."

****

Jesse started to stir and was abruptly brought back to reality by someone kicking him in the stomach.

"Remember how much we had here last time?" Bettino asked kicking Jesse once again.

"Why... am...I... here?" Jesse asked as he tried to catch his breath.

"Oh come on Doctor Travis, I believe that you know the answer to that one," his captor pointed out.

"Am I the only one here?" was Jesse's next question.

"You know that I don't like having just one hostage...I mean what fun is that?" Bettino teased.

"Who...Who else is here?"

"Your dear old friend, Mark Sloan," with that he kicked Jesse once again.

"Where... is he? Why... isn't he... in here?" Jesse fired off questions hoping that Mark was alright.

"Don't you remember...he was brought into Community General?"

Jesse's eyes got wide remembering Ramos talking to him on the phone, "Emma, where is she?"

"Dead along with her annoying daughter," Bettino pointed out.

Jesse closed his eyes for a moment but was forced to open them when he felt another kick this time in his back. "Wh...Why did you have to do that. Why did they have to die?"

"Oh don't worry you will see them both soon," he assured the young man with one more kick before he left the room.

Jess waited a moment before he even tried to sit up. Finally he worked up enough strength to move to the wall so that he could prop himself up, "this can't be happening again," he shouted.

"Is that you Jesse?" A voice came from the vent next to him,

"Mark," Jesse looked at the vent hoping that there was a way that he and his friend could talk.

"Yeah, it's me Jess, how are you feeling?" Mark asked his worry notable in his voice.

"Like I've been used for a punching bag," he tried to laugh, but sound even the small gesture caused him pain.

"Don't worry Jess, we'll get out of here," Marks assured him.

"I know, we always do...but Mark he killed Emma Ramos and her daughter after he got her to call me." He could feel his eyes tear up, "they would be alive if he didn't want her to call me."

"We don't know that... all that we do know is that he is crazy and we have to find a way out of this before he gets Steve to come after us."

****

Steve entered Amanda's path lab to find that she was working on a few reports, "have you heard form Jesse yet?"

Amanda looked up at her friend and shook her head no, "sorry, but that isn't the reason that I called you. Mark isn't here and his shift started four hours ago."

"Have you tried calling him?" Steve asked getting worried this was definitely not like his father.

"Yeah, several times but there were no answer at home or his cell phone."

Steve started to say something but didn't get the chance when his cell phone started to ring, "Sloan."

"Well, well, well, we speak again..."

"Antonio Bettino," Steve said coldly knowing that he was the reason for both the murders and the disappearance of his father and Jesse.

"You remember my voice," Bettino happily laughed into the phone.

"Where are they?"

Amanda listened to every word that was being said. She knew all to well what damage Bettino could do when he had a person as his hostage.

"Steve do you really think that I'm going to just tell you where they are?" He asked laughing more.

"What do you want?" Steve asked frustrated with Bettino's games.

"You to come to me...alone. If I see anything that even resembles a cop I will kill them both," he ordered coldly.

"Just name where?" Steve calmly asked.

"You know where, the same place that both Amanda and Jesse were being held last time," was the last thing Bettino said before he hung up the phone.

Steve put his phone away and looked up at Amanda who was staring at him, waiting for him to explain what was going on. She knew that it wasn't good, anything that had to do with Antonio Bettino was always bad news.

"He wants me to go to him," Steve finally said breaking the silence.

"Steve, you need backup, he's crazy he will kill you all if you do as he says," Amanda told him in no certain terms.

"I know what he is thinking so I'm going to have Cheryl go in from the back, just in case I need her help," he said heading out the door.

****

Steve and Cheryl sat in his car three blocks from Bettino's house, "you be careful and don't let him see you," Steve said protectively.

"I'm always careful aren't I?" Cheryl teased.

"Is the backup in place?" Steve asked looking around.

"Yeah they're all dressed in plain clothing and will be out of sight," she assured her partner.

"Ok, now is as good a time as any," Steve said starting his car.

Cheryl got out of the car and leaned back in once more, "you be careful too."

"I will," he said as she closed the door and he drove off.

****

Bettino sat in his car as he waited for Steve to arrive, "where are you, Sloan." His face lit up when he saw Steve pull in front of the house. "Let the games begin," he said starting his car and leaving.

Steve came to the porch of the house noticing that the door was ajar. As he came closer to it he found a note tape to it.

Sorry that I couldn't be here when you arrived, but you will find your father and friend up stairs. Oh and good luck.

Steve put the note into his shirt pocket as he entered the house. Soon he heard a small noise from behind the door. He looked to find that the door was rigged with some kind of trigger. He began to search the downstairs until he started to smell smoke. He looked at the stairs to find that the top floor of the house was on fire. He rushed up stairs to not liking the rate the fire was spreading.

****

Outside the house Cheryl looked in horror as the top floor of the house was on fire. She rushed to the backdoor and opened it and quickly made her way inside cautiously. After making sure that all way clear downstairs she headed up the stairs that was already on fire along with some of the walls on the bottom floor of the house. She didn't care she had to find her partner.

"Steve," She called out when she found it hard to see three feet in front of her.

"Over here," he called out.

She made it to his side as he was kicking a door open. He entered the room calling out for his father or Jesse.

"Over here...Son," Mark said between coughs.

"Dad," Steve said as he looked around the room and finally found his father, "lets get you out of here."

"You need to find Jesse," Mark told him.

"I will, you go with Cheryl," he said looking at his partner, "get him out of here and call for an ambulance and the fire department.

"I'm on it," she said helping Mark out of the room.

Steve didn't let anytime pass he went to the next door kicking it open, "Jesse, are you in here?"

Hearing coughing he entered the room to find that on the floor only half aware of what was going on, "Jess, can you hear me?"

"Steve?" Jesse said in a low whisper, his eyes never opening.

"Yeah it's me, Buddy, we need to get out of here," he told his friend but noticed that his words were falling on deaf ears because Jesse had already passed out.

Steve picked up his young friend and carried him out of the room. As they neared the stairs he noticed that they were unstable and completely on fire. He looked at his friend and then headed for them anyway, "let's go for it."

He started down the steps to find that they were a little more stable than he thought and prayed that they would hold out till he and Jesse got off them.

Finally they were at the bottom and he headed for the door. As they were safely out and were met by his partner, Steve turned to the house and just looked at it as he heard the sirens in the distance, "that was too close."

Mark was soon at his side, "lay him down Son, so that I can check on him."

Steve turned to his father and did as he was asked and watched as his father looked after Jesse.

"He took in a lot of smoke and it looks like Bettino used his stomach and back as a kicking board," he father said, pointing to some bruised areas.

"But is he going to be all right?"

"He should be, Son," Marks looked up to see the ambulance pull up and two EMTs headed toward them.

Steve placed his hand on his father's shoulder, "how are you, Dad?"

"I'm fine," he assured his son.

****

Later At Community General

Steve walked in next to his father as they followed Jesse's gurney into the ER. "Dad, I'm going to go find Amanda and tell her what's going on."

"Alright, Son," Mark watched as Steve headed for the elevator.

Same Time Path Lab

Amanda sat at her desk looking at the file that she had put together on Emma Ramos and didn't notice as the door open.

"It's good to see you again, Bentley." A voice said coming from behind her.

Amanda stopped reading and swallowed hard as she turned to find Bettino standing behind her pointing a gun at her.

"What do you want?" She asked trying not to let her fear show when she spoke.

"Well, just to have everyone that had something to do with me going to prison to die, what else?" Cocking the gun he ordered, "Get over here!"

"No," she said firmly.

"What did you say," he shouted.

"I said no, if you are going to kill me do it, but I'm not going to help you in anyway," she told him the fear evident in her voice.

"Make no mistake about it, Bentley, I am going to kill you," putting his gun to her head, "on your knees, Now!"

"No," she said again.

Pulling her up by her hair then kicking her feet from out from under her he laughed as she fell to he knees, "see I have my way to make you do what I say."

Amanda closed her eyes. She could see CJ and Dion in her mind as a single tear ran down her face.

Bending down so that he was next to her ear Bettino whispered, "Are you ready to die?"

Amanda started saying a silent prayer hoping that he children would be all right without her.

"On the count of three, Bentley," he whispered before he stood back up straight. "One...Two..."

"Hold it right there," Steve said as he entered the path lab with his gun aimed at Bettino's head.

Bettino turned pulled Amanda up by her hair again and held the gun to her temple as he turned around, "Leave, Sloan."

"I can't do that and you know it. Now put the gun down," Steve shouted.

Amanda looked at her friend not even wanting to breathe wrong knowing that Bettino was planning to kill her.

"You shoot her and you're a dead man," Steve stated as he cocked his gun.

"Either way, I'm dead might as well take one of you with me," Bettino said as he lent into Amanda face whispering, "It's time to die my dear."

Amanda closed her eyes once again then reopened them to look at Steve. He had a look in his eye, the look that said that he was sorry. Amanda took all the strength she had and forcefully pulled away from Bettino as Steve started firing at the man.

Everything went in slow motion for Amanda as she fell to the floor. She could hear the gun go off what seemed to be a hundred times but really there were only three shots fired. Moments later she felt a pair of hands on her shoulders, she tried to get away from who ever it was. She still had her eyes closed when she heard Steve's voice, "It's alright."

She opened her eyes to see Steve kneeling beside her, "Steve," she finally started sobbing in his arms.

"Shh...it's alright, Amanda...No one is going to hurt you," he soothed as he looked over at Bettino's body.

****

Later That Afternoon

Amanda entered her house to be met by Dion and CJ. She knelt down on the floor and waited for them to run into her arms. She couldn't stop the tears that fell from her eyes.

"What's the matter, Momma?" Dion asked as he pulled away from her.

"Nothing Honey, I'm just happy," she told him pulling him into another hug.

"Guess what I did today?" CJ said excitedly.

"What did you do honey?" Amanda asked.

"I met a new friend," he said with a huge smile coming to his face.

"That's nice," she said looking up at Mary Ellen the young lady that watched her boys after school.

"You want to meet him later?" CJ asked.

"Sure, Honey."

"He said that he had to go to see Uncle Jesse and Mark at the hospital," CJ blurted out.

"Who are you talking about?" Amanda asked starting to get a little worried.

"I was playing in my room alone a little while ago and a man came in the window talking to me," he told his mother.

"Do you know who it was?" She asked.

"Rich Bettino, he said his name was. He told me to tell you that he would be back," the little boy said.

"I've got to make a phone call, Mary Ellen, can you stay a few minutes more?"

"Sure," Mary Ellen said getting the boys out of the room giving Amanda some privacy.

Picking up the phone Amanda started to dial a number and brought the receiver to her ear waiting for her friend to answer.

"Sloan," Steve said answering the phone.

"Steve, listen...CJ just told me that a Rich Bettino was on his way to Community General."

Steve looked over at his father sitting in a chair next to a sleeping Jesse's bed half asleep, "Don't worry, I'll take care of it."

"Thanks, Steve," she said listening to her friend a few moments more before hanging up the phone.

Steve looked over at his father once again and then started dialing his partner.

"Hello," Cheryl said cheerfully.

"Hey, partner, I need for you to come to Community General," he then explained what Amanda had said to him about Rich Bettino.

"I'm on my way, I will be there in a few minutes," she assured him.

"Ok, see you then," Steve said hanging up the phone.

Half Hour Later Jesse's Room

The door opened to reveal that the room was in complete darkness. Rich Bettino entered with his gun in hand as he started toward the bed. He stopped when he felt something touch his back and soon the light were switched on to reveal that the bed was empty and Steve was right behind him his gun in his back, "put the gun down."

Cheryl came into the room and headed to where her partner stood, "look what we have here."

Rich dropped his gun and looked straight ahead, "this is not the end of this, trust me."

A Week Later BBQ Bobs

CJ and Dion sat next to their mother as Jesse brought them all soda, "so what are we going to do this afternoon?"

"Can we go to the beach?" Dion and CJ asked in unison.

"Sounds good to me," Jesse excitedly said looking at Amanda, "what do you say?"

"I say that we had better call Mark and see when he and Steve are going to be off work."

"Is now too soon," Steve said heading to the table with his father.

"We were going to head to the beach, would you mind if we all go to the beach house?" she asked.

"Not at all," Mark assured her, "besides we can have dinner there."

Everyone turns their attention to CJ as he starts singing, "We're going to the beach."
