"I'm not sure about this, Alex." Mark said as he skated along side of his young friend. "What's there to be unsure about?" Alex asked hoping that Mark would participate. "Everyone is doing it and it is for breast cancer research. You know that particular charity is dear to your heart." Mark skated about his office as he thought it over. "What did you say this was again?" "OK, it is Changing Places day. It is sponsored by a charity that is working on breast cancer research. For the whole day, you and someone else change jobs. You do that person's job and he does yours, it is that simple." "Alright, but the person I want to change places with is you." Mark finally said after thinking about what Alex had just said. "Me... Doctor Sloan?" Alex asked somewhat dumbfounded, "why would you want to change places with me?" "Because I think that it would be fun being a medical student again," Mark said with a smile. "So you go out and get some sponsors and so will I and in three days time, we'll be each other. How does that sound?" "Sounds like fun, Doctor Sloan, but what if I make a mistake doing your job? What if I do something wrong?" He mind was now racing with a little panic. "Not a problem," Mark assured his young friend. "I will get a hold of Doctor Davis to spend the day and keep an eye on you. Any thing you prescribe, he will have to agree to. You'll learn a lot from him. He's a great guy. " Mark skated into Norman in the hallway, "Come with me," Norman said nervously. "What's wrong, Norman?" Mark asked. "First of all, take off those skates--this is a serious hospital," he said as he and Mark headed toward the nurses' station. "I don't know what you're doing I mean I heard all about this changing places fiasco. We don't pay you to lark about, even though you spend a lot of the time you are supposed to be doing hospital business outdoing police business, we are not paying you to change places with Alex." Norman looked at Mark seriously. Mark had to fight the urge to laugh he knew that Norman like to pinch every penny in half. "It will be fine, Doctor Davis will be in charge of him and he can't do anything wrong." Mark watched as Norman started to relax a little, "Consider it a day off for me. Just let Alex go through what I usually do, and then you don't have to pay either of us." Norman then took a deep breath, "Alright I can tell that I can't talk you out of it." "I'm afraid not, Norman." "Alright I will overlook it... this time," he stated as he started to walk off. "How much did you say you were contributing, Norman?" Mark asked stopping him. "How much have the others given?" Norman reluctantly asked. "It depends on how much they can afford. I think you could afford at least twenty dollars." "Twenty? Are you... well... ok but only this once?" Mark left secure that he wouldn't have any problems with Norman that day and he was making a considerable amount of money in sponsorship for the charity. He and Alex would be able to help the research along quite a bit. He had seen the poster for this appearing here and there. **** Three Days Later Mark and Alex met in the hospital corridor. "Now, Alex, lab coat and serious expression. You are a responsible head of department and should be stodgy, very stodgy." Mark put on a serious expression and Alex laughed. "I have a class in the morning and surgery in the afternoon. Then at 5, I have to wait on tables at Barbecue Bob's. I promised Jesse, I would work until 9. At 9, I have a party at Diana's place and at 12, another party at Lawrence's place." Alex said as he watched Marks expression turn to one of astonishment. "So what do I have to do?" Alex asked. "Go see Doctor Davis and he will keep you right track. Good luck and enjoy the day and see what I do for a change. "Mark said heading down to the ER. **** Alex walked into Doctor Davis's office. "Ah, you must be Alex. Mark has told me a lot about you." "You must be Doctor Davis." Alex asked shyly. He looked the doctor over he was short, about 40ish with reddish brown hair and his blue eyes and a charming voice. Alex had heard that Doctor Davis had a reputation as being a flirt with his patients, but never going too far he was just enjoying himself. The two of them went on their rounds and they saw a lot of Mark's patients. When they got to the room of Mrs. Rosa Evans it was clear to both of them that the lady was very ill and struggling to breathe. "Doctor Davis?" She asked gasping to breath. "Brian, to a beautiful woman like you," he said in a sly manner. "I don't want to be drugged after all you only go through this once in your life." "If you are lucky." "Will you please sit with me through this? I know I am dying. I am scared, I don't want to die alone." "Of course, I can't reassure you there is nothing to fear, but we can stay with you." he assured her as he and Alex sat down in the darkened room. They waited as her breathing got slower and slower. Eventually all the machines began to sound the alarm. The nurses came in and turned them off. Doctor Davis sat there for a few minutes longer. Then he got up and kissed her hand. He laid it down gently beside her and smoothed her forehead. He closed her eyes. Then he went over to the window and opened it. "What did you do that for?" Alex asked. "So her soul could go to heaven," he said as he looked at her once more before covering her head with a sheet. They visited a lot more patients and Doctor Davis pointed out what to look for, how to spot different problems that might crop up, what to prescribe, and other things that Alex found a tremendous help. **** Mark went to his second class. They all sat down. Mark lay down his head and fell asleep. "Hey, Doctor Sloan, class is starting." one of the students said. "I figured since I was trying to be Alex for the day, I might as well act like him." "Everyone, if we have a pop quiz, you know whose shoulder's you should read over." Another student joined in. "I'll hide my paper if there is a pop quiz." Doctor Wesley came in (maybe Alex could take this class). "Speaking of which, I think this would be a splendid time to see how much you all know." "Don't forget, Dr Sloan, there is a party for Dianne at 10 tonight." "I thought Alex was working at Barbecue Bob's until 9." Mark said. "He is, and then we have a party at Dianne's. Since she is a close friend of Alex's, he would normally dance the night away," the student said grinning from ear to ear. "Where does he get all his energy from?" Mark asked getting tired just thinking about it. **** After lunch Alex had to do his rounds with the senior doctors who were delighted that Mark had changed places with Alex. They knew that this was something that only Mark would pull off. Alex went back to Doctor Sloan's office and was met by his secretary, "What does Doctor Sloan normally do in the afternoon?" "He spends his time avoiding this." She placed a huge pile of papers on the desk in front of Alex. "Don't worry, sweetie, all of them need Doctor Sloan's personal attention. Just relax for a few minutes or go and see Doctor Davis again." "He got called out on an emergency. Let's see what he has among his books." He was beginning to get bored when Steve poked his head around the corner. "Have you seen my father?" "No, but he is in the ER I think," Alex replied. "Today is the changing places thing right?" Steve asked. "That's right. Is there anything that I can help you with? Besides, I'm bored to death," Alex confessed. Steve looked at the young doctor and smiled, "you wanted to be my dad for the day? Well, I have a homicide case; I would normally ask him about. Why don't you tag along and see what you think?" "Me?" sputtered Alex. "It doesn't look like you have anything better to do and I can't see a doctor being squeamish." "OK." Alex said. "What am I suppose to do Steve?" Alex asked somewhat puzzled that Steve wanted him to help with the case. "The same as my father, help when you can but try to stay out of trouble," Steve pointed out, "but try to do that better than my father." Alex was now excited, "where do we start?" Steve watched as Alex's eyes just glimmered with excitement, "like I said, the murder scene." As they rode in Steve's car, Steve outlined the case. "The victim is Mrs. Kathy Muller. She has a daughter called Melissa Ann. Kathy's father went to Kathy's home to pick up Melissa to take her to playgroup and found her still asleep in her bed. When he went into her mother's room to find out why his daughter was not ready he found her murdered." Alex face went pale, "she was killed with her daughter in the house?" "Yes," Steve sadly said. "Why on earth would someone do such a thing?" Alex asked. Pulling into the driveway of the Muller's home, Alex swallowed hard as he looked over at this friend. "Are you ready?" Steve asked as he got out of the car heading toward the house. "Hey, wait up," Alex said getting out of the car and followed Steve in the house as he met with Amanda. "What do we have, Amanda?" "Two gun shot wounds to the chest area," Amanda informed him. "And the little girl never woke up with two shots being fired?" Alex asked stunned. "They must have used a silencer Alex," Steve told the young man wishing that his father had come with him. "I knew that," he said wanting to kick himself for missing that. "Sure you did," Amanda chimed in. **** At Community General ER Jesse Travis walked cheerfully to Mark's side, "hey, Mark." Mark turned to face his young friends totally exhausted, "Jesse, what brings you here on your day off?" "I came by to see if you wanted to go for a late lunch?" Jesse then noticed how tired Mark really was, "are you alright?" "Yeah fine and lunch sounds great. I almost forgot what its like to be a med student," he said sighing. "Not me I remember it like it was yesterday," Jesse said remembering his time as a med student. "In your case it was yesterday," Mark retorted. "Hey, I am glad that I'm not a student any more and you only have to work a few more hours' right?" Jesse cheerfulness was starting to bug Mark, "Jess, are you always this cheerful?" Jesse thought for a moment, "well, yeah." Mark couldn't help but to laugh, "what was that about lunch?" "Not at the hospital though I'm not like your son, the man who can eat anything," he then paused for a moment before adding, "I'm buying." "I think that we should be going then," He walked over to sign out then joined Jesse to leave. **** Later At Community General Alex met with Doctor Davis and started on their afternoon rounds seeing each patient that they had that morning. At the rounds were almost over both heard their names come over the loud speaker followed by a CODE BLUE. Alex and Doctor Davis rushed to the room that they had heard to find that the patient was in full cardiac arrest. The doctors and nurses worked feverishly to save the young woman and finally brought her around after a few minutes only to have her crash again, this time they were unable to bring her around. Davis looked at the nurse, "what happened?" "She was given the wrong meds," she shouted at him. "What do you mean given the wrong meds?" He asked aggravated that she had raised her voice at him. "I gave her what you," she pointed at Alex, "had written down and she quickly stopped breathing." Alex was shocked how did this happen? He checked everything with Davis. "Let me see that," Davis took the chart from the nurse and looked at it, "you're right." **** That afternoon Steve entered Amanda's path lab finding her busy doing paperwork, "you wanted to see me?" She turned with a smile on her face, "yes, it seems that Kathy Muller didn't die of the gun shot wounds." "Then what did she die of?" He asked somewhat puzzled. "She was poisoned and was shot two to three hours after she died," She informed Steve. "I found out that Mrs. Muller was a nurse here at Community General, she started just two days ago," it was Steve's turn to share the information that he had found. "She worked here?" Amanda was now stunned by the new developments. **** Norman Briggs met Mark as he was about to leave, "Mark, I need to see you for a moment." Mark noted the seriousness on Norman's face, "what is it, Norman, you look like you have seen a ghost." "It is worse than that, Mark. I knew that this was a bad idea, but once again I just gave in, not giving you a fight about it, and now just look what happened." Norman said with out taking a chance to breath. "Calm down, Norman, what happened?" Mark said in a soothing voice. "Doctor Martin prescribed the wrong medication to one of the patients that he saw this afternoon and they went into cardiac arrest! I knew this was a bad idea, but no, you just had to switch places with a med student!" "Wasn't Davis checking everything that Alex did?" Marked asked. "He said that Alex called out the right medication and wrote down the wrong one for the patient," Norman repeated what Davis had told him. "Let me look into it." Mark said. "Is Amanda doing the autopsy?" "Yes, I believe she is doing it right now. What are we going to do? I knew this was a bad idea, but you wouldn't listen. I knew it." Norman started to pace back and forth not wanting to believe that this was really happening. **** Mark headed down to see Amanda. "Have you finished the autopsy report's on Mrs. Muller and Mrs. Gregor?" "Yes, I have the results on Mrs. Gregor right here. She was given an overdose of digitalis. A smaller dose would keep her alive, but the larger dose that she was given caused complete heart stoppage. Look here is the original prescription in Alex's handwriting." "I thought Brian Davis was keeping an eye on Alex. How could this have happened?" Mark asked astonished at what he was looking at on the chart. "I don't know, but if we don't find out, there is a good chance the relatives will sue, the hospital, Alex, Brian and you. They could even name the three of you in a wrongful death suit. " She pointed out worried about her friends. "There has to be a reason for this. I have known Brian for years; he wouldn't make a mistake like this. What about Mrs. Muller?" He asked wearily. "There are scorch marks on the temple which show that the gun was placed right up against her temple. But why shoot someone when they were dead from poison?" "Why indeed?" Mark looked at the report that Amanda handed him. "You look tired, Mark, maybe you should go home and rest," she then watched as Mark just shook his head no. **** At the police station Steve looked up from his desk to see a tall muscular man walk over and stop. "Can I help you?" "Are you the detective in charge of the investigation into my wife's death?" The man asked with an angry tone. "If you are Martin Muller, then I am checking into the death of your ex wife." Steve leaned back in his chair and looked up at the man. He had wanted to question him and this seemed like a perfect opportunity. "I loved my wife," he pointed out. "Is that why she had a court order restraining you from visiting her?" Steve asked sitting back up in his seat. "She was only trying to squeeze more money out of me," he replied taking the chair across from Steve. "Are you married?" Steve shook his head no. "Well if you ever get married and divorced, you will find out they'll do anything to squeeze the last penny out of you." "Do you know of anyone who might have a grudge against her?" Steve watched Muller's face to see his reaction to the question. "Ask that new boyfriend of hers, the dope pusher. He probably had a dozen reasons to kill her. What about my little girl? I am her only relative now, I should get sole custody." He stood up and paced in front of Steve's desk. "You will have to take that to court. With the restraining order against you, we can't let you have her," Steve pointed out sternly. "I'm her only surviving parent," he cried out putting both hands on the desk and leaning forward so his eyes were level with Steve's. "With a restraining order, ordering you to stay away from the child," Steve answered keeping his eyes on Muller's face, "like I said the courts will be over what happens." Steve watched closely for any sign of violence--the paperwork had said he had a nasty temper. "I lost my temper when I saw that she was dating a drug addict, look it won't happen again." Muller's face softened as tears came to his eyes, "please my daughter." "Sorry, I still can't let you have her. How do you know this boyfriend sells or takes drugs?" Steve watched as the once cold eyes were shedding more tears, personal experience? You have two convictions for using drugs, yourself." He watched the man further thinking that he was putting on a good act. "I've known so many I can spot one easily," he let out a sigh. "I am going to court today to ask for my daughter. If you had a heart, you wouldn't keep her from her own father," Muller pleaded. If I had a heart, Steve thought, I would keep her away from a man with a string of convictions for temper, and drug misuse. **** Mark questioned all the nurses that were on the floor when Mrs. Gregor collapsed. They all reported the same thing. Doctor Davis was a favorite with the nurses. He was a constant flirt, but not in a chauvinistic manner, all the nurses agreed. Alex had seemed nervous, but had settled down after being with Doctor Davis for a few hours. There wasn't a nurse there that had a bad word to say against either of them. Alex was writing prescriptions and Doctor Davis was checking them. Mark looked again at the prescription the handwriting was definitely Alex's but he thought the numbers on the pad looked just a little different. Then he realized. The 7 that changed the dosage into 710 grams instead of 10 grams had a stroke through it. That was a very European way of writing a 7. Alex would never do that. Alex wouldn't have known about the European way of writing it. **** That Night At The Beach House Steve put down several folders on the coffee table as Mark, Jesse and Amanda sat on the couch waiting to start to work. "What did you find out today about Kathy Murrells's boyfriend?" Mark asked. "Not much, it is like this guy disappeared," Steve said sitting across from his father and friends. "What's his name?" Jesse asked. "Hank Brinson and every lead we get on him it turns up as a dead end," At Steve looked at the folders and then at his father, "how's Alex doing?" "Not good at all he is worried." "Hey, Mark, aren't you suppose to be at Bob's working for Alex?" Jesse asked with a big grin. "I am going to leave in a few minutes. How on earth does he do this everyday?" Mark asked. Jesse couldn't help but laugh at Mark. "It's not funny," Amanda hit her young friend in the arm. "Hey, I never said it was funny, I was just thinking about my days as a med student that's all," he said in his defense. "Look, Dad, you don't have to go in, I happen to know the owner and he can give you the time off," Steve happily. "No, I said I would and I will, but I think that I may need a little help from falling asleep," Mark said with a yawn. "No problem, my partner will go with you," Steve offered. "I will?" Jesse looked at Steve a little dumbfounded. "Yes, you will!" Steve said sternly. "Yeah, Mark," Jesse said with a bright smile, "Let's get going." "Are you sure?" Mark asked. "Oh yeah, I love Bob's you know that," Jesse assured him as both men headed toward the door. **** Jesse and Mark were surprised to see Bob's busier than they had been in a long time. "What do you say that we call Steve in for a little help," Jesse teased as he came to pick up another order. Mark smiled as he thought about the idea, but knew that Steve was busy trying to figure out the case at hand. The name that his son said earlier kelp haunting him, "I am never going to get this," Mark stated as Jesse came back to the table. "What is there to get? All you have to do is take orders," Jesse teased. "I was talking about Hank Brinson," Marks said as he still tried to remember. "Brinson...Brinson, you know I feel like I should know that name too." Jesse said as a customer got his attention. "I'll be right back," Jesse said heading over to the table. Mark headed over to another table as Jesse left, thinking to himself, 'how does Alex do this every day?' Later that night Jesse came over to Mark excitedly, "I know where we have heard the name from." Mark was sitting at the counter half asleep, but the last words that Jesse got out woke him up instantly. "Where?" "Brian Davis talks about him all the time, that is his stepson," Jesse said. "That's it... I think that we need to call Steve to pay Davis a little visit." Jesse waited for Mark to call Steve then he asked, "Why don't you go home you look beat?" "Jesse, I told Alex that I'm going to do what he does for a day and well after work I've got a party to go to." Jesse looked at Mark for a moment before speaking, "Mark, you're going to a party? You look like you are going to fall down at any time and you're going to a party?" Mark smiled at the young doctor, "how would you like to come with me?" "If you promise that I can drive," Jesse said jokingly. "Deal, besides I'm going to need you to keep me awake. How can he do this everyday?" Mark questioned. "I haven't a clue, but it seems to be working for him," Jesse joked. **** It was late when Jesse dropped Mark off at the beach house after the big party and he was beat, "how did I let him talk me into this?" After thinking about that question he knew that it was his great idea in the first place, but at the same time knew that he would never make this mistake again. **** Next Day Community General Mark decided to question the nurses again. "Isn't Nurse Rebecca Dominick from England? She the nurse who was on an exchange plan" Mark asked Amanda. "Yes, she used to live here as a child and went
back to England. When the change to work here opened up, she jumped at it. Mark decided to start with nurse Dominick and went over to her house. He rang the doorbell and eventually she opened up. "What is it I can do for you Doctor Sloan?" she asked reluctantly letting him inside. "I have been looking over Mrs. Gregor's notes. Did you know her?" He asked nurse Dominick. "How could I have, I was in England and was transferred over here one year ago." "According to some of the other nurses, you lived here years before you transferred to England." "So, what if I did?" She sat down on the sofa and glared at him. He may have seniority, being a doctor but she didn't like being questioned. "I think you may have known her before when you lived here. I can look it up, you know" "Alright, alright, so I knew her. I don't go around giving overdoses to everyone I knew." "Why did you hate her enough to kill her?" Mark asked. "I didn't say I did?" "Alex didn't write that 7 in front of that prescription. I know Doctor Davis didn't either. You were the only one who could have written it like that. What happened?" "She knew why I left for England. I had been a favorite of the boys and one of them had gotten me pregnant and dumped me. I couldn't handle that so I moved to England where I could start afresh. I put the baby up for adoption." "She was adopted by the Muller's wasn't she?" Mark guessed. "Yes, I hated Mrs. Gregor for knowing who I was and I hated the Muller's for taking my child. I couldn't watch her grow, I couldn't watch her take her first steps, and I was robbed of everything that a mother loves about a child. I couldn't even tell her I loved her. "I'm sorry. But that is not the whole story is it?" Mark asked point blank. "What do you mean?" "Hank Brinson is Melissa Ann's father isn't he?" Mark asked watching her every move. Dominick looked at him some what dumbfounded, "yeah, but he doesn't know." "Did you kill Kathy Murrell?" Mark asked knowing what the answer would be. She shook her head sadly, "no." "Hank did, didn't he?" "Yeah, but I swear that he didn't know that Melissa Ann was there." Rebecca was almost in tears at this point. "Is it possible that he knew that Melissa Ann was his daughter and not told you?" Mark asked. "I guess that he could have, but why not tell me?" She asked as she looked at Mark trying to figure out what he was saying. What about Brian Davis? Did he know that he was her grandfather?" "I have no idea, and he wouldn't be her grandfather. He is Hank's step dad." She snapped. "So, he looked as if he wasn't doing his job?" Mark questioned. "I..." her words were interrupted by someone clearing their throat. Mark turned to see both Brian Davis and Hank Brinson entering the room. Brinson was carrying a gun as he came, "so you figured it out, Doctor Sloan?" "No, we figured it out," Steve said as he pointed his gun into Brinson's back. Four other officers come in and take Davis, Brinson and Dominick into custody. **** Next Day BBQ Bobs Mark, Steve, and Amanda sat at a table as Jesse and Alex came out carrying a tray of ribs, "dinner is served." Alex sat down across from Mark, "I can't thank you enough for your help." "I couldn't let my best intern get his license taken away," Mark joked. "Hey!" Jesse called out. Mark looked over at his friend, "one of the two best." "That's better," Jesse said as he took a seat next to Steve. "How did you know?" Alex asked. Mark looked at Jesse, "well after Jesse reminded me that Brinson was Davis's stepson, Steve did a little checking and it turns out that Davis put a great sum of money into Dominick's checking account." Steve was the next to speak up, "Dominick is singing like a canary. She has already told us everything including why everyone was killed so that she could get her daughter back. She planned to marry Brinson so that Melissa Ann could have a real family as she called it." "That is some way for a child to be raised with a family of killers," Alex said in disbelief. Jesse looked at the platter of ribs in front of him, "well, if you guys don't mind I am starving. Let's eat." Amanda just laughed, "food, is that all you
think about?' The End home | vs home | season one | season two | season three | join dmvs | e-mail us | guestbook |
