Steve had once again joined his partner and several other officers at Jesse's apartment building. They were half way down the hall when they noticed that the door was partially open.

Cheryl looked over at Steve, "what do you think?" She asked as she aimed toward the door as Steve pushed it open.

Seeing that the living room was empty they entered and started to search when Steve heard a click. He stopped in his tracks, "Cheryl over here," he called in a hoarse whisper.

Cheryl watched as Steve pointed to his shoe. Seeing the bomb device that he was standing on she quietly said, "Steve, I don't think that you should move."

"I don't plan to. Get the Bomb Squad over here," he stated as she continued to stare at him.

"Oh, come on Steve, they will be here in no time so just don't go anywhere till they get here," she teased.

"Funny, real funny," Steve then looked back down at the device and back to his partner, "now I know how Ron felt."

A few minutes later Cheryl came back to Steve's side handing him a pair of gloves, "I thought that I would bring you something to do. It looks like our friend left you a little something."

After putting the latex gloves on he took the letter from the plastic bag opening it to read.

Steve,

It's almost time for you to die. You might get out of this one but next time you will not be so lucky. Oh yes and I hope that Dr. Travis is alright I have a few more surprises left for him.

Bettino

Steve slipped the letter back into the bag that Cheryl was holding open for him, "I need a guard put on Jesse's door. Now!"

"I'm on it," she said pulling her cell phone out seeing the Bomb Squad coming into the apartment.

Steve watched as two men came to his side, "hi there detective."

"Let's save the small talk for when I don't have a bomb under my foot," Steve snapped wanting to get out of there and to the hospital to make sure that everything was alright.

"Let's get to work then Max," one of the officers said looking to his partner.

After what seemed like forever Steve was finally able to move his foot off the device. "Thanks," he told the men from the bomb squad.

"Hey, no problem," the two officers said in unison.

"Ok there is an officer heading over to Travis' hospital room," Cheryl informed him coming over to his side.

"Good I want to get there myself something doesn't feel right about this," Steve told her.

****

Bettino walked over to Amanda who just looked away from his glare. "Oh don't worry, it's almost time for you to see your friends again before you all die."

"Leave them alone," she snapped at him.

He slapped her across the face, "I'll have no lip from you."

Amanda just looked up at him contempt showing in her eyes.

"I know that I left Travis so that he could be found but soon he will die where he is." He smiled as he saw the fear in her eyes.

"Why are you doing this?" Amanda asked.

"Revenge my dear, revenge is the only reason," he slapped her again, "I told you not to talk."

****

Mark watched as Jesse slept. He looked like a child lying there so small and scared. He was worried about his young friend, but he couldn't get past the guilt that he was here at the hospital while Amanda was still out there somewhere.

Jesse opened his eyes and looked over to the chair that Mark was sitting in. "You still here?" he asked.

"Yes and I'm not going anywhere," he assured Jesse. "How are you feeling?"

"Sore," he said as the unbearable pain rushed though him.

"I'll get you something for the pain," Mark headed out of the room finding Alicia Mitchell a nurse stationed on that floor telling her what was needed.

Walking back into the room he headed over to Jesse's side, "you're medication will be here in no time."

"Thanks Mark," Jesse said a grim look coming across his face.

"Hey, what is it?" Mark asked Jesse worriedly.

"Oh it's nothing," Jesse said turning his head so Mark couldn't see that he was about in tears.

"I think that I know you better than that," he replied sitting next to Jesse on the bed, "come on out with it."

"Has Steve come back yet?" Jesse asked.

Mark shook his head, "no."

"Oh," was all that Jesse could say when the door opened and as Alicia Mitchell came in carrying a syringe.

"Here is what you needed Dr. Sloan," she said handing it to Mark.

"Thank you I will take it from here," Mark said knowing that Jesse was still needing to talk to him about what was bothering him.

"Yes sir," with that Alicia left the room.

Mark headed back to Jesse's side, "Ok let's see what we can do about your soreness." Mark put Jesse's medication through his IV and then disposed of the syringe into the proper bin.

"Mark," Jesse gasped as he found it hard to breath.

"Jess," Mark was quickly to Jesse's side.

"Can't breathe...." With that he closed his eyes and stopped struggling.

Mark looked at the IV and pulled it out of his friends arm picking up the call button calling for a nurse at the same time.

"May I help you?" Came over the intercom.

"Yes, get some help in here Code Blue!" Mark shouted.

Mark quickly started CPR, "come on, Jess, you can't do this."

With in seconds a team of doctors and nurses rushed into the room with a crash cart.

Down the hall Steve and Cheryl were heading to Jesse's room when they heard the commotion, "What's going on?" Cheryl asked.

"I don't know but it's not good," was all he said as he headed to his friend's room to confirm what he had already feared.

A few minutes later, Mark came out into the hall just after the team left and found his son and Cheryl.

"Dad?" Steve questioned both worry and fear showing on his face.

"Come in here," Mark pointed to Jesse's room.

"Entering the room Steve looked over at his friend, "is he alright?"

"Yes, he was lucky this time, but," he trailed off thinking of how close this really was.

A smile came to Steve's face, "maybe he should die?"

Mark and Cheryl looked at him in disbelief, "what?" they both asked at the same time.

"I mean that maybe we should fake his death to get Bettino off his back," Steve said in his defence.

"That's a great idea," Mark agreed.

A few minutes later Steve exited the room acting completely grief stricken about his friend's 'death'. Cheryl had her arms around him to comfort him as they left the room leaving Mark to stay with Jesse till he was moved to a safer place.

Later At The Beach House

A little over an hour had passed and Jesse started to wake. Mark was by his side with in seconds seeing the alarm on his friends face, "hey Jesse."

"Wh...What happened?" Jesse asked his voice coming out as a low whisper.

"It seems that Bettino wanted you out of the way so we had to make sure you died," Mark informed him.

"What?" Jesse asked completely confused.

Jesse looked around seeing that he was no longer in the hospital but at Mark's beach house, "what happened?"

"We had to fake your death and get you out if the hospital. I set up every thing that you need here."

"Did Steve find... Amanda?" Jesse asked wearily.

Mark just shook his head no.

****

Steve and Cheryl stood out side of the interrogation room, "ready?" Cheryl asked.

"Yeah," he said before opening the door heading in to face Alicia Mitchell sitting in the room nervously.

"Mrs. Mitchell what happened this afternoon at Community General?" Cheryl asked.

"Look, I been trying to figure it out myself I swear I don't know how I got the wrong medicine for Jesse...I mean Dr. Travis," she then started to cry heavily. "I can't believe because of me he...he's dead."

Steve couldn't figure out if she really didn't know what happened or she was just a good actress. "We have the vial that you took his medication from in the lab but we already know that the content of the vial wasn't a pain killer like my father asked you to get."

"Then it all my fault," Mitchell stated.

Cheryl looked at her partner and shook her head. "Did you see anyone at the medicine cabinet before you opened it up or did you leave the vial anywhere?"

"Look, Dr. Sloan came to me asking me to get Travis's meds. No one had a chance to find out. I went straight to get it for him," Mitchell confessed with sad eyes knowing that her medical career was over.

****

"Good news Bentley, your friend Travis is dead and now it is time for Steve to die," Bettino said entering the room where Amanda was being held in.

Amanda just stared at Bettino praying that he was wrong.

"Don't worry my dear, you will be the last of Mark's loved ones to die," he assured her.

Everything that had happened over the past few days came into her mind. She knew that this man was capable of anything and she had to find a way out of this prison she was in and get to Steve to warn him, but she didn't know how.

****

Steve Sloan sat at his desk caught up in his own thoughts when he heard his partner calling him, "Steve are you coming?"

"Where?" Steve asked not hearing anything that Cheryl had said.

"Steve did you hear anything that I just said?" Cheryl asked frustrated with her partner.

"Sorry I guess I was..." he trailed off as he started thinking about Bettino and what he was trying to do.

"Look, we don't have time for this, there was another body just found a few minutes ago," she informed him as she headed to his desk, "let's go."

Steve looked at Cheryl as he stood to follow her, "let's go," he said heading out the door.

Walking into the home of the new victim Steve and Cheryl look in disbelief to find that they body belonged to Alicia Mitchell, "she was killed the same as the other?" Steve asked heading over to Brad Pipkins.

"Yeah, but his time there is a message to you," he said looking at Steve.

"What kind of message?" Steve asked looking down at the body once again.

"Here," Pipkins' handed Steve a letter that was in a plastic bag.

Steve pulled a pair of gloves out of his jacket pocket slid them on and then he got the letter out and opened it to read.

Steve,

It is time for you to die now that Travis is out of the way.

Bettino

Steve looked over at his partner then back at the letter, "this has to end."

"It will," Cheryl assured him.

****

Amanda had managed to get the door to the room that she was being held in open and carefully she peaked out. After seeing that no one was to be found she headed down the hall. After what seemed like forever she was out of the old abandoned house. She stopped when she was far enough away from the house that she felt a little safe then turned to look at it glad to be out of their and way from Bettino.

Across the street Bettino watched at Amanda headed away from her prison and toward a place that she thought would be safe. "Enjoy freedom while you have it," Bettino cynically sneered with an evil laugh.

****

"Jess, I'm stepping out for a few minutes to go to the store," Mark told his young friend a worried look on his face .

"Ok," was all Jesse said he didn't even look up he was too caught to in his thoughts.

"See you in a few minutes," with that Mark headed out the door.

A few minutes later Jesse heard something in the down the hall, "Mark is that you?"

The door to his room opened and he was stunned to see Amanda standing there and she was equally as surprised to see him.

"Jesse."

"Amanda," they both called each others name in unison.

"I thought... I mean he said that he killed you," Jesse said his voice coming out in a low whisper.

"I'm fine, except for a few cuts and bruises. How are you," Amanda came to Jesse's bedside looking at her friend.

"Sore," he said trying to sit up.

"Hey, you need to lay back and rest," Amanda ordered.

"You need to call Steve."

"I..." she was interrupted by the door opening.

"Well, you are a hard one to kill, Travis." Bettino said as he entered the room gun in had as he slamming the door behind him.

Jesse looked up at Bettino, "how did..."

"What, how did I find you? Oh, I just followed Bentley here."

Amanda's thoughts were going haywire as she muttered out loud, "I should have known that it was too easy getting out of there."

"Yes, you should have, but well now I have the two of you again, just like old times right, Travis?" Bettino said heading to the bed side of the young doctor.

"What do you want?" Jesse asked angrily.

"Oh just to kill you two and the two Sloan's. That is going to have to wait till they get back home. I want Mark Sloan to see me kill you two and that son of his before I put a bullet in his head." Bettino said in an eerily cold voice.

"You're not going to get away with this," Jesse shouted at the man.

Bettino reached over with his free hand putting his hand around Jesse's throat and started to squeeze, "oh, but I will."

"Let him..." Amanda started to say as she heard the door open.

"Hey Jess, I think that I left..." Mark said as he entered the room. Seeing Bettino's hands on Jesse he charged towards him shouting, "Bettino you want me let them go.

Bettino loosened his grip and with one powerful swing knocked Mark to the floor telling him, "Mark Sloan it good that you could join us."

Jesse was trying to catch his breath as Amanda came to his side, "Jess."

"I'm...fine..." he managed to get out between breaths.

Mark turned his attention to Bettino, "what do you want?"

"You dead what else?" then he turned his attention to Amanda and Jesse, "but, you will see your friends die first."

"Your fight is with me let them go," Mark pleaded as he looked at both his friends.

"They won't be going anywhere," Bettino assured Mark.

"Why do you want to hurt them? I'm the one that sent your brother to prison."

"Yes, that is true but I lost my brother because of you, and you will loose your friends because you sent an innocent man to prison," Bettino then pointed at the phone ordering, "pick it up."

Mark looked at the phone asking, "Why should I?"

"You are going to call your son NOW!" Bettino ordered.

"There is no way that I'm going to do that."

Walking over to Amanda and Jesse he pulled Amanda to him as he rested the gun against her head, "I said, call him."

"Alright," Mark headed to the phone, "just let her go."

"Call him first," Bettino barked out yet another order.

Mark looked at the phone as he started dialling Steve's cell phone.

"Sloan," Steve answered.

"Yes, may I speak to Steve Sloan please?"

"Dad, is everything alright?"

"No, I need to speak to my son when he gets in it's important," Mark said knowing that Steve needed to get there but also wanting his son to be safe when his did arrive.

"Is he there?"

"Yes, that's right I'm at home.

"Is everyone alright?"

"Yes, but I need for him to call me as soon as he gets in."

"I'm on my way," Steve said to his father as he looked at his partner.

"Thank you," Mark said hanging up.

"He wasn't there?" Bettino asked.

"No, he had to step out for a minute," Mark watched Bettino's face hoping that he believed him.

****

Cheryl headed to her partner's side, "what is it?"

"Bettino is at my place with my father and Jesse," Steve then got to his feet and headed to the door.

"What are we going to do?"

"Get them out," Steve informed her as he pulled out his cell phone calling for back up.

Steve was alone when he pulled in front of the beach house. He whispered aloud testing the wire that he was wearing one more time, "can you hear me?"

"Loud and clear," Cheryl's voice came over the two way radio.

"Ok, it's show time," Steve said getting out of the car heading into his home to find his father and friend with his gun in hand.

As he stepped into the house it looked like no one was there. He walked into the kitchen finding that it was empty as well. He then knew that he had to go check in Jesse's room. When he got there it was empty except for a note that was lying on the bed.

Steve,

Come find us if you can. We are in the house but where?

Bettino

Steve looked in every room up stair then decided to head down to his apartment.

Opening the door to his room he found his father, Jesse and Amanda sitting on his bed and heard the sound of a gun cock from behind him.

"Don't make any sudden moves," Bettino said as he pushed Steve forward.

Steve's and his father's eyes met as Steve was pushed toward the bed next to his father and friends.

"It seems that I have everyone here now," Bettino said smugly.

"So now that you have us what do you have planned?" Steve inquired.

"Just to kill you three so that Doctor Sloan to watch," Bettino then pushed Steve on the bed.

Steve was quick to turn to face Bettino, "really?"

"Steve, do you think that you can play hero today?"

Steve just looked at Bettino not saying a word.

Pointing his gun at Steve's leg he fired a shot and was overjoyed when Steve cried out in pain, "Oh did that hurt?"

Mark was quick to get to Steve's side. "Bettino, why don't you just leave them alone?"

"What's the matter, Mark?" Bettino asked. "You are going to just love this," he said pointing his gun at Amanda.

"No," Mark pleaded.

Smiling Bettino started to pull the trigger when he was knocked to the ground by Cheryl bursting into the room with several officers. Pulling out her cuffs she placed them on Bettino's.

"So what took you so long?" Steve asked his partner as his father looked at his leg.

"You're welcome," she shot back.

****

Later At Community General

Steve hobbled along side his father as they entered Jesse's room where he and Amanda were having a friendly argument.

"It was not my fault," Jesse argued.

"Yes, it was definitely your fault," she shouted back teasingly.

"What wasn't his fault?" Steve cut in wondering what they were bickering about.

"Well, Jesse here, was supposed to take CJ and Dion bowling, and now he can't go." Amanda explained.

"How could I have foreseen this?" Jesse asked.

Amanda then looked at Mark, "well since these two can't go Mark would you like to join me?"

"I would love too, Amanda."

"Hey, why can't I go?" Steve asked.

"Cause we have to have someone cover my shift at Bob's," Jesse cut in, "and after all you are my partner."

"Don't remind me," Steve retorted.

Amanda and Mark looked at each other and headed out of the room stopping as the door closed, "you think they will ever stop arguing?" Amanda asked pointing at the door.

"Probably not, but I wouldn't have it any other way."
