with the show...
The day was overcast and muggy threatening rain any minute. Steve hated this kind of weather since it made everything depressing. Course this day would of been nicer if he didn't get in that little argument with his father and his girlfriend. Mark didn't want his son to go on this drug bust afraid that something bad might happen. And Steve's new girlfriend had to take off to New York for an acting job. Steve didn't want her to go. They just found each other and he was afraid she would end up living there and long distance romance never worked. Steve just shrugged off his father. He has been on countless drug busts where nothing has gone wrong. But Cassie, this was going to hurt for sometime. She wanted him to take her to the airport and he had to do this drug bust. Cassie was very upset that he couldn't take the time to take her. Steve tried to make her understand how important this raid was. And asked her to take a later flight. Cassie just couldn't do that. She tried to make him understand also that her career was just as important. So they both left each other with out a word. Driving up to the warehouse district. Cheryl, Steve's partner shook her head and started to check her gun. She didn't understand why Steve was doing this. He now has a girlfriend that he has been longing for and all Steve could do is think about is his job. When will this man ever take time and smell the flowers. "Steve, you don't really need to do this?" Cheryl said looking at her friend. Steve nodded. "Yes, I do." he took out his gun and checked it. "I've been on countless raids and has anything gone wrong on any of them." "I can think on countless times." Cheryl just shook her head. "I hope you know what your doing." "I do." Steve got out and smiled. "Let's go." Quickly Steve rushed to the front entrance where an officer was standing. The officer nodded signaling for all the other officers to move in. As soon as Steve was in he caught glimpse of two men with guns and shot at them. Within fifteen minutes all the suspects were gathered up and Steve was leading one of the last leaders out. When the suspect was in the hands of an officer he decided to check up on Cheryl. As he stepped onto the balcony he quickly spotted Cheryl handcuffing a suspect. The suspect definitely looked like he had taken a beating from her. "That a girl" Steve said smiling. Without warning Steve heard a click sound as a gun went off. Cheryl looked up at Steve and pushed the suspect back. As she did she heard a gun as Steve rushed at her. Everything seemed to happen in slow motion as Steve's body jerked. Cheryl watched in horror as Steve lost his balance and collided into the railing. All she saw next was her friend falling backwards down three stories. "Steve!" Cheryl ran to the railing and saw Steve laying on his back on a trailer. "Steve!" she saw an officer climbing the trailer. "How is he?" When the officer climbed to the top the officer's heart sank. Steve's eyes were open in a ghostly stare not even closing when it began rain. Blood pooled from his head quickly washed away by water. He checked for a pulse and laughed with glee when Steve had a weak one. "Get somebody here now!" The officer took off his jacket and held it above Steve's head. "Hang in there Steve help is on the way now." In a few minutes a paramedic made his way to Steve. "He's not breathing!" he checked for a pulse. "And he doesn't have a pulse!" he started to do CPR when he heard a crack. "I need paddles!" ----- Steve woke up with a jerk finding himself in a dark room. His whole body ached his head throbbing with every beat of his heart. Moaning he rubbed his face as his vision began to focus more. The room was really small and it seemed like there were animal skins hanging everywhere. He also noticed that there was a kitchen just a few feet from his bed. Where on earth was he? He tried to sit up but that just caused pain to rack his body. Laying his head back down he was about to close his eyes when he heard a door open. Looking that way he saw a young man carrying a bag of some kind. The man dropped the bag by the fireplace and turned around towards Steve. He smiled brilliantly as he quickly made his way towards him. "Bout time you woke up. Thought ya weren't ever goin to."
he said with a thick southern accent. "Texas" the man took a rag and placed it on Steve's forehead. "Found ya while gatherin wood. How you feelin?" "Like I've been hit by a truck." he sighed as the cold rag on his forehead soothed his pounding head. The man looked at him weird. "What is a truck?" "I don't know." Steve lifted his arm and noticed that he was not wearing his clothes. He was wearing clothes just like the man nineteenth century style. Man, he must of hit his head harder then he thought. "What's the year?" "Eighteen Sixty Six." he sighed. "You sure ya aright?" Steve closed his eyes. "Really, I don't know." The man patted Steve's shoulder. "Sorry, I didn't introduce myself. Name is Hayes Cooper." Quickly Steve opened his eyes and studied the young man. This can't be Hayes Cooper there is no way. The man had short, brown hair and a slight beard. He was also incredibly skinny. Steve had always thought that he was muscular. He swallowed his surprise. "My name is Steve Sloan." "Steve, nice to meet you." Cooper got a glass and handed it to him. "Here drink this you seem like you need it." "Thanks." Steve took a sip noticing that it was tea. "This is good." Cooper smiled. "Home grown." he patted Steve's leg. "You go to sleep." ----- The waiting room was really crowded as Cheryl slowly paced the room. She couldn't believe what had happened to Steve. She looked at Mark who was being comforted by Amanda. Jesse still hasn't told them anything about Steve which usually meant that it wasn't good. Slowly Jesse strolled in looking for Mark. Mark looks over at Jesse as he comes in and sits down wearily. "Steve is incredibly lucky to be alive right now." Amanda gave Mark a hug as Mark turned to ask Jesse a question. "But he's going to be okay, right?" Jesse didn't know how to tell Mark. But he knew he had to tell him the truth "It will be a miracle if he makes it through two days." he sighed heavily. "He has a severe head injury which is causing his brain to swell and right now there is nothing we can do without causing him anymore problems." Cheryl slowly stood up. "Other then that though he's all right, right?" "Afraid not." Jesse rubbed his neck. "His rib cage is
crushed and because of that both his lungs have been punctured. Right now we have inserted
two chest tubes to help drain his chest cavity of air and blood." he laced his hands.
"Also he has two cracked vertebrae's and most of his internal organs are
bruised." he sighed. "It will be a miracle if he makes it through tonight." Mark wiped his face. "When can we see him?" "In about an hour or so. Right now we are putting him on life support." he got up. Jesse started out but then turned back to Mark. "I'll get you when it's time to see him." ----- A rooster crowed waking Steve up from a dreadful sleep. Rubbing his face he took a deep breath and smelled something really good cooking. He glanced over to the kitchen and noticed Cooper sitting by the fireplace wildling wood. Who would ever thought that this young man will later on turn into one of the best Texas Rangers. "What are you cooking?" Cooper turned around smiling. "Oh, it's rabbit." he
stirred the pot. "Had to kill two to make this soup. How do ya like ya rabbit?" "Ya act like ya haven't had rabbit before." Cooper laughed. "Well, ya goin to have it the way I'm cookin it all right?" "Yeah, okay." Steve slowly sat up his head swimming. "I don't know if I'm up to eating yet." he swallowed hard. "I think I'm going to be sick." Quickly Cooper got up and grabbed a bucket just when Steve got sick. "Here." "Thanks." Steve wiped his face. "I hope that wasn't your water bucket." "Nope." Cooper went to a door and took the bucket outside. "Not no more it ain't." he went to the kettle. "I think the soup is done." But as soon as Steve took one sip of the soup he had to lay back down. "I think it's ya head." Cooper took the cup and started to eat the soup. "Ya had a pretty bad bump when I brought ya here." "It's called a concussion." Steve spurted out. "Sorry, didn't mean to snap." Cooper looked at him strangely. "Concussa-what?" he shook his head. "Get to sleep ya really need it more then I thought ya did." ----- As Mark walked into the hospital room. His voice caught in his throat. His son, his best friend, had tubes and wires coming out of him from everywhere trying to keep him alive. Tape covered his eyes to help keep them closed and moist. What was really disturbing was the tube coming out of Steve's throat. "Jesse, why is there a tube in his throat?" Jesse stepped up to Steve and checked the tube. "This is just a temporary thing. Also we couldn't get him to unclench his teeth without breaking his jaw." he sighed. "He's in a deep coma. So any movement that he does will just be muscle contractions or reflexes." Mark nodded. "Thanks Jesse." Mark took hold of his son's hand. "Hey, tough guy it's me your old Dad." He started to massage his son's hand. "You hang in there all right?" Amanda went to the other side of the bed noticing that Steve's breathing was very labored. Glancing down at her friend's side she saw a tube coming out between his ribs. Following the tube she quickly turned away when she saw a bag of blood. "Is there anyway you could hide that?" Amanda said
pointing to the bag at the foot of the bed. "I know we are all professionals here,
But the sight of Steve's blood. Well it just's not good." "What's with his breathing?" Cheryl said trying to fight back how she was feeling. "His chest is full of fluids and air right now compressing his lungs. Also his chest cavity was shattered during the fall. It's amazing we're able to help him breathe in this kind of condition. Most people don't even make it to this stage with a crushed rib cage." "Steve, isn't like normal people." Mark patted his son's hand. "He's going to proof all of you wrong." ----- Another day has passed since Steve woke up this day though he was able to sit up and walk around without being sick. So, he helped Cooper with the house chores while Cooper showed him how to live in the nineteenth century. Course Steve couldn't remember where he lived last. He had a feeling though that he didn't live like this before. He just wished he could remember something about his life. Cooper sat down at a table and counted some coins. "So, how do ya feel about goin into town with me." he put the coins in a leather bag. "It will be a four day trip." "Four days?" Steve nodded. "Yeah, sure. You live that far out?" "Not actually." he showed Steve his badge. "I took time off cause of my leg but I'm better. Hope ya can ride a horse." "I can ride." Steve pointed at Cooper's leg. "What happened to your leg?" "Ran into some injuns awhile back." he made a circle on his thigh. "Got shot with an arrow. Hurt like mad too." he leaned back in the chair. "It was deep and I couldn't walk on it without it hurtin so I took time to heal." Steve was surprised this wasn't the Cooper he was reading about the night before. He always wondered what it would be like to be a Texas Ranger. Cooper was one of his hero's. Read everything he could find on him. He almost smiled when he realized he's seeing the human side of the legend. He knew though in ten years from now he will be one of the toughest Rangers to live. "So, when do we leave." Cooper took out a watch. "Tomorrow mornin at 2. Want to start when it's cooler so the horses don't get over heated." Steve smiled. "Good idea. Well, let's get ready." ----- The machines did their usual noise as Mark sat at Steve's bedside holding his hand. He was getting weaker causing his skin to get really pale and gray. Jesse is amazed that he has made it through the night but didn't expect him to last the week. Mark knew that his son was a fighter and wouldn't give up so easy. Suddenly Steve's arm twitched violently causing him to nearly fall backwards. Mark remembered what Jesse had told him and also all the schooling he had himself. But it's like he is forgetting everything he learned, when it comes to his son and how hurt he is. Mark knowing that this might happen because of the brain injury but he never expected it. After a few seconds his arm relaxed. "Boy, Steve that made me nervous." He looked at his son. "No wonder Jesse didn't put the IV's in your hand you will just pull them out." "I know this is all because of the brain injury." Mark fights crying "No matter what you are when you wake up, Son. I will be by you all the way." A nurse walked in and smiled. "How is Mr. Sloan doing today Sir?" Mark shrugged. "Doing better." He looked at the nurse. "His arm went into a spasm. The nurse sighed then took the tape off of Steve's eyes. When she did Mark quickly had to look away. His son's eyes just stared out their blue color seemed to have no life in them. "I wish he would respond" He asked glancing at Steve whose eyes were taped up again. "I know you want him to Dr. Sloan." then she presided to check all his tubes and bags. "He's doing good though. He might make it through another night." He smiled. "See he's a fighter." He looked at Steve. "He's going to come out of this with no problems. There will be no sign of brain damage." "Dr. Sloan, those spasms are usually indications that there is
serious damage. And you should know this Dr. Sloan. If he comes out of this perfectly
healthy it will be a miracle of God." Amanda comes in and sees Mark very tired looking. She went to Steve's bed. "How is he doing?" "No improvement." he sighed. "Amanda I don't know what to do." "What do you mean?" Mark turned to her with tears in his eyes. "Jesse came in here earlier this morning and told me that Steve's brain was still swelling." he wiped his face. "He gave me the option to...." his voice started to crack as he began to cry. "Amanda, I can't do it." She gave Mark a strong hug. "He's going to pull through." She glanced at Steve. "He always does." Mark looked up at Amanda. "But Steve has never been hurt like this before." Mark looks back at Steve "But I can't stand not having him...." Amanda goes around to the side of the bed that he's sitting on. Goes up behind Mark and gently puts her arms around his neck. They both just stared at Steve and then at the same time said to him "You can do this. You can make it through." ----- The sun beat down hard as Steve and Cooper rode on the desolate
prairie. Steve was amazed at Cooper's ability to ride a horse. This man could ride even
when he's fast asleep on the saddle. "You aright?" he asked looking around. Steve nodded. "Yeah, what is it?" "Outlaws." Cooper peeked above the grass and took one shot. "And one is no more." he took aim and shot again. "That's two." he took one more shot. "And that's three." he turned to Steve and smiled. "Let's check them out." As Cooper joked Steve is amazed at how relaxed he was. Whatever happened to Cooper to have him to use this humor? "You hungry Steve?" "Uh, yeah. What you thinking about?" Cooper smiled. "Rabbit what else." he patted his horse's back. "Let's ride." "What about these men?" Cooper shrugged. "Men will be here don't worry. Let's go." ----- As Jesse walked into the hospital room he was grateful that he didn't see Mark in the room. He had suggested that Mark take some time away from the hospital and that he would call him if any news came up. Unfortunately the only news was that Steve's condition was quickly going down hill. Going to his friend's bedside he took Steve's hand. "Hey, buddy." he sighed. "Mark is at Amanda's taking a shower and eating dinner. They've called the airport in New York. to get Cassie to turn around and come back. So it's just me tonight." Steve's leg twitched then his whole body started to thrash around.
Jesse stepped back as he watched Steve fight the restraints. It hurt him so bad to watch
his friend go through this. Jesse took off the tape from his friend's eyes. He noticed that his friend's pupils were huge definitely not a good sign. Jesse paged for more help. As Amanda was about to enter. She saw Jesse and a nurse looking after Steve. She decided to go straight to the lounge where she found Mark. "Mark? What are you doing back here?" Looking very weary, "Amanda, I'm sorry but I couldn't stay away." She sat down beside Cheryl, who hasn't left the hospital since Steve was brought in. "I heard the alert." Cheryl leaned forward then buried her head in her hands. "What is going on?" She looked at Amanda. "I have never heard of people acting this way in a coma." "He has a severe head injury Cheryl." Amanda stared at the wall. "If he makes it he most likely won't be the same Steve we know." Cheryl huffed. "I know." She leaned back in the chair and tilted her head to the ceiling. "God, if your there please save our friend." ----- The cold night air whipped at Steve as he tried to sit comfortable
by the fire. It was his last night before he got to town and he was so grateful. He didn't
know if he could last another night with rocks digging his back. Looking at Cooper he
noticed that he was wide awake sifting the fire. "Can't really get to sleep." Steve laid back and looked at the stars. "This is beautiful. Do you ever get tired looking at this?" "It's a sky." Cooper laughed. "You sometimes act like a city boy ya know that?" "Really?" Steve realized what Cooper was saying and shrugged. "I don't know what you mean I love it here." Cooper shook his head. "Steve, ya one confusin guy." he pointed a stick at Steve. "I like that though." Steve shook his head. "You do?" he laughed. "You know I might stay in town once we get there." "Oh really? Why's that?" "I don't know." Steve sat up on his elbows. "I might stay there till your next visit to see if I like the city life or not." "Are ya sure about that? My next trip could be months." "I'm sure." he laid back down and smiled. "I'm enjoying it here." ----- After all had calmed down. Amanda and Mark went to Steve's room. Jesse looked at his friend and had to fight back his own tears. Since Steve's fall five days ago he has only gone downhill. His chest cavity started to bleed again last night and tests show that a rib punctured a vital artery. Jesse told them it was probably caused by Steve thrashing around. And now Steve was bleeding internally with no way the doctors could stop it. Then there was Steve's head injury and brain damage. It seemed that Steve's brain began to swell so bad that the doctors are opting to take him off of the life support. The shunt behind Steve's ear is to help release air and liquids building up inside his head. Even with that little help Steve's life laid in Mark's hands. "Jesse, I need to be alone with Steve." "Okay." He gave him one last sad look before leaving the room. When he was alone Mark sat by Steve's bed and took hold of his cold hand. He hated to see his son like this but he couldn't take him off of the life support. He didn't want that guilt feeling of having killed his only son. He smiled. "Steve, all of your friends have been here day and night. Cassie is on her way back from New York. Don't you want to be awake when she gets here?. I know you like to make people worry about you." Mark chuckles. "But come on son. Lets not get off on the wrong foot with Cassie so soon." Just as Mark finished Cassie walks in the room. She stops and puts her hand over her mouth and gasp. Not believing her eyes. "Oh my..." She slowly goes over to Mark and lays a hand on his shoulder. Mark looks back and smiles up at her. "I just finished telling him you were on your way back" Cassie smiles. "Thanks Mark. Can I talk to him now?" Mark moves from the side of the bed so Cassie can get closer to him. She starts to speak and realizes she is cracking with emotion. Clearing her throat she begins to tell Steve that he needs to come back to her. As she was speaking to Steve he moaned and his arm twitched then he relaxed. Cassie wished that Steve would wake up but that was just a dream. She knew deep down that he may never wake up again. ----- The town bustled with activity as Steve and Cooper rode into town. Steve tried to hide his smile as he looked around at the simple times. He would love to stay here and see if he could actually live here. Cooper rode his horse to a saloon and got off. "Drink is on
me." Inside the saloon many people turned to Cooper and Steve staring at them. Cooper
just ignored them and sat down at a table. A waitress came up. "What will it be
boys?" Steve sighed. "The only thing I remember is a lady," a badge flashed before him. "I think I was a law officer." Cooper smirked. "Where at? Texas." Steve nodded his head. "You know every night you ask me about my life but I never really knew." He closed his eyes and saw a pretty woman. "And now it's starting to come back to me." "Here's ya beers." the waitress put two filthy glasses in front of them. Steve smiled. "Thanks." when she left he leaned in closer to Cooper. "I remember something about a truck." "What is a truck?" Cooper took a sip of his beer. "Never heard of it before. Do ya mean trunk?" "Hmm...I don't know." he sighed. "And I remember something about war and bombing." he shook his head. "Cooper things are coming back to me that makes no sense. Memories that seem out of place where I'm at." Cooper sighed. "Well, ya not makin any sense to me." realization hit him. "I've read this in a book about time travelin." He scooted away from Steve. "Ya time traveler ain't ya." He started to laugh. "No wonder ya English is so good." Steve smiled. "Yeah but this life is so perfect right now." He looked around. "I don't know if I ever want to get back to my old life." Without warning a tug came at his chest causing Steve to gasp. "What's happening?" Cooper looked at him. ----- Jesse quickly rushed to Steve's room when he heard Code Blue. Getting there he saw a team of doctors pulling a crash cart and doing CPR. Cassie was standing outside being comforted by Amanda. "What's going on?" Cassie cries to Amanda. Amanda shook her head. "He's flat lined." A tear ran down her cheek. "He's not going to make it. Is he Amanda?" ----- "What did you do?" Cooper asked looking down at Steve who was breathing real heavy. "What happened?" "My life flashed before me." he sat up. "Oh, god Cooper what did I do." Cooper shook his head. "I don't know but ya gotta get back." He smiled. "It's not to late ya can still go back." "Ya think so." Steve couldn't believe what he just said.
"I have a southern accent. Cooper what's happenin?" Steve nods. "Ya too." ----- Suddenly Steve's body was jerked violently through a bright light.
Opening his eyes he saw that he was in a hospital room surrounded by doctors. He looked
around to see stunned faces. "Steve, well it's about time buddy," as Jesse shone a
light in his eyes. "If you can see this blink." "Son, you're awake." Smiles. "I knew you could make it." He started to move around, "Steve don't move you're going to pull tubes out," Jesse told him. "Don't you worry everything is going to be okay." One Week Later Cassie goes into see Steve. She smiles down at him sleeping like a baby. Steve feels a presence around him and slowly opens his eyes. Cassie seeing that he is waking up. Steve says, "Hi" very confused. "Hello" Cassie knew something was wrong by the way Steve looked at her. "I'm sorry. I'll let you sleep more." As she turned to leave the room. She glanced back at Steve and he was fast asleep again. Steve sat on the bed looking at the wall amazed at what he had
heard. Jesse told him that he was lucky to be alive today. His friends filled him in on
what was going on and he couldn't believe it. He nearly died course the pounding headache
and his sore back and chest sort of told him. Looking out the window he could see his reflection in the glass. It was still hard to see him with a white bandage on his throat reminding him of a tube that was once there. He also saw the tube behind his ear that was going to get removed tomorrow. He wanted so badly to get up and walk around but all the tubes tied him to the bed. Jesse told him that he had cracked vertebra in his back which will mean he will have to have a brace on. "Hey, buddy." Jesse went to Steve's bed and handed his friend a notebook. "How's it going?" "Good." Steve's voice was sore. "Don't need book." Jesse shook his head. "Your throat is still really sore." "Fine." Steve laid his head down. He had to swallow. "Jesse...Will I have a scar?" "Yeah, but you're alive." Jesse smiled. "For a while
there we didn't know or not if you were going to make it." "No problem." he patted Steve's shoulder. "That tube is history come tomorrow. Bet your happy." "Yeah." He felt the tube. "Why didn't..." he took a drink of water. Why didn't they just cut my head open?" Jesse sighed. "You mainly just had liquid and air built up." Mark walked in just then smiling. "Son so glad you're up." He came over and laid a hand on his shoulder "How you doing today?" "All right." he took another drink of water. "How you doing?" He grinned as he asked his father this. Mark smiled back at him. "I'm doing really good. And so is Cassie." "Cassie?" "You don't remember Cassie?" Mark looks up at Jesse surprising. Steve looks at them both with a worried look. "Guys, whose Cassie?" Jesse comes closer to his side. "Don't worry buddy. There are going to be things that you aren't going to remember." Steve tried to shake his head but the tube stopped him. "I want to remember." he took a long drink of water. "Son don't worry. You will remember in due time. Right now you need to get your strength up and things will come back to you." "Jesse?" Turning towards him. "Steve, Your father is right. Don't worry about things you can't control right now. All this will come back to you in time. You are one very lucky man. You shouldn't even be alive right now. So a couple of things here and there that you can't remember isn't all that important." Steve knew that Jesse was right but the name Cassie seemed so familiar to him but then again it didn't. But he will concentrate on getting better and then hopefully all his memory will come back. Jesse looks over at Mark and gives him the 'I need to talk to you out in the hall look'. "Well, Steve visiting time is almost up. But we will be here tomorrow." "Okay, see ya then." "Jesse?" Mark is worried and sees Cassie standing next to Amanda. Jesse and Mark approach Cassie. Seeing tears in her eyes. "I know about his memory." "How did you find out?" Jesse responses back to her. "I went in to visit him the other day and he didn't know who I was. I didn't do anything or say anything to him. I just left." "Cassie, Steve will get his memory back. Please give him time." As Jesse puts his arm around her. "But I think it would be best that you don't see him right now and that none of us speaks about you. He is very confused right now and he doesn't need any more problems even if its just in the memory department." Cassie is crying harder now. Realizing that the man she loves doesn't even remember her. "Jesse, When do you think I will be able to see him?" Mark interrupts "Cassie we have no idea. If you really love Steve you will give him this time?" Amazed by what she just heard. "Mark you know I love Steve and yes I will give him this time. But please, please keep me informed on his progress and the first signs of him remembering who I am. I better get a call from one of you." Mark goes over and gives Cassie a big hug "You better believe we will" They all just smiled at each other. Cassie leaves the hospital and goes back to New York. She was looking into a job there. And now it was even harder to do as she knows that Steve may never remember her. He never wanted her to leave LA. but her career as an actress was taking her to the big city. And this has been her dream come true. She slowly makes her way to Steve's room. Cracks the door open just enough that she can see the man she has fallen so deeply in love with. Thinking to herself that he is looking so much better then he did a couple of days ago. Whispering through the crack in the door. "I love you." Steve, hears something turns his head quickly towards the door. Without realizing the pain that it would cause. "Hello?" Cassie shuts the door and once again in a whisper says "I love you." Two days later Jesse was thinking about releasing Steve from the hospital on strict rules. He was amazed at how quickly Steve has pulled through and instantly declared Steve a walking, talking miracle. The only problem that Jesse sees is Steve's ribs, lungs, and back. There was no signs of lasting brain injury or internal injury. Steve sat in his room the first time in awhile by himself not attached to any machines besides the IV's. As he was laying in his bed he couldn't help but to remember the times he spent with Cooper. Was this all a trick his memory was playing on him? After all he has forgotten some things and remember others. The time he spent with Cooper was so real so vivid that it seemed like it really happened. Steve though couldn't help but to think that it didn't. He was after all in a deep coma with no sense of his surroundings. He closed his eyes but quickly opened them when he heard his door shut. Looking around he didn't see anything so shrugged it off and closed his eyes again. "Hey, how ya doin?" That voice sounded so much like Cooper was he dreaming again? Opening his eyes he nearly screamed when he saw the tall, lean, young man standing at his bed. "Thought I was dreaming." Cooper shook his head. "Ya ain't. I'm here." he looked
around. "Wow, this place is incredible." "What do ya mean?" Cooper shrugged. "I think I'm dreamin." Taking a slow deep breath Steve shook his head. "You sure are here. You smell like grass and wood." Cooper smelled his dirty shirt. "Knew I should've washed it this mornin." he shook his head. "Oh well." he smiled. "Just came here to check on ya. Glad to see ya doin much better." "Thanks for telling me to leave." Steve smiled. The door to Steve's room opened and Jesse stepped in. "Who are you talking to?" he scanned the room. "There isn't anybody here." Steve shook his head. "You wouldn't believe me even if I told you." Jesse smiled. "Try me. I've heard plenty of your stories before." "Okay, I was talking to Hayes Cooper." Jesse couldn't hold in a laugh. Knowing that Steve was reading the book on Hayes Cooper the night before the raid. Steve couldn't stop telling everyone how he always wanted to be a Texas Ranger just like Cooper. "That's really good Steve. You know that guy has been dead now for a hundred years." "See told you." "I'm not saying...." He stopped in mid-sentence when he spotted a man in the corner looking at them with a smirk. The man was dressed up in eighteenth century clothing that has seen better days. "Who are you?" he asked his voice cracking. The man laughed. "Hayes Cooper is the name." He threw something at Jesse who caught it with one hand. "Steve, that's for you. To remind ya of the times we had." he tipped his hat. "Nice to meet ya sir." With that he disappeared into the wall. Jesse shakily turned to Steve his eyes wide. "What just happened?" Steve smiled. "You just met Hayes Cooper." he reached for the wooden figures that Jesse was holding. "Well, all-be-dang that man is talented." He studied the small attached figures and saw that it was Cooper and him riding. There was a badge on the lapel of the one that was him. Jesse looks at Steve. "Is that your badge?" With a little huff. "Yeah it is but it's all tarnish." the badge was as tarnish as tarnished old Cooper. "You got to be kidding. Steve we have been looking all over for your badge." "Why didn't anybody tell me?" "Cause we thought it got misplaced by accident." He shook his head. "Man, this is freaky." He took the badge and smelled it. "This badge is old Steve." "It can't be that old." He took the badge back. Mark walked in and glanced at Jesse. "You look like you've seen a ghost." Jesse just gave a light chuckle and half smile. "You can say that I have." "Hey, Steve you found your badge." He grinned. "Yeah,
