| My first formal music training came in the Conway Middle School band, at which point I began playing the euphonium. After a year I began taking private lessons from Mr. Jack Emig. It continued on at Winter Park High School, at which point I learned tuba as well. I played a year of tuba, after which it became my instrument for marching band only and I went back to euphonium for concert band playing. I also began teaching myself bass guitar my first year of high school as well. All told, I made all-state once and all-county 4 times. I took AP Music Theory and IB music, and passed both tests. Currently I attend the University of Florida, and I play euphonium in the symphonic band and I marched sousaphone in the fall. I first began writing music for the music theory class and also wrote some for the IB music class. I continue to do so on my own, mainly just to see for myself if I can do it, but also because it's fun for me. My aim is to put together some things that other people can enjoy playing. My focus is generally tuba/euphonium music because that's my roots, and some of my best memories in high school were playing in tuba quartets. Since the instruemnts themselves have much shorter histories than say, trumpets or strings, the volume of music written for them is smaller than for other emsembles, so my main goal is trying to fill in some holes, as it were, as well as create some works of my own. I don't exclusively write for that setting though, because, frankly, I'd get bored if I limited myself to one thing and one thing only. And because "No man is an island..." My Main Music Teachers (in order of appearance): Mr. Fred Kagi, Mr. Keith Nichols, Mr. John LaCognata, Mr. Ryan Thomas, Mr. Todd Doan, Mr. Joel Moody, Mr. Justin Davis, and Mr. Matthew Sexton. Honorable mentions to Mr. Timothy Anderson and Mr. Jay Jacobs for being great guest/grad assistant conductors of the symphonic band here at UF. My Biggest Influences Bands: Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Stavesacre, Five Iron Frenzy, the Normals, Robert Walter's 20th Congress. Composers: J.S. Bach, Percy Grainger, Robert W. Smith, Bela Fleck, Victor Wooten, Edgar Meyer. |
