The 15th day after Easter Sunday, which corresponds to the 10th day after Ascension. Symboically related to the Jewish festival of Shavuot - it commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the followers of Jesus. Described in the Acts of the Apostles Pentacost is also called "Whitsunday" meaning wit or wisdom. According to the bible the experience was shared by all in the large crowd causing confusion and inspiring fear. "When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language..Then how is it that each of us hears them in our own language...Amazed & perplexed , they asked one another, "what does this mean?" .. Then the Apostle Peter, standing with the 11 apostles, spoke to the crowd. He explained that these strange events had been predicted by the prophet Joel, and that Jesus' coming had been prophesied by David. Peter explained that these events confirmed David's prophesied exalation of Jesus. Peter then exhorted his listeners to turn to Christ. About 3000 responded to Peter's sermon. |
