FEASTS OF MARY
PRAYERS TO MARY
Assumption
August 15th - Definition: Our Blessed Mother assumes her place in heaven with her son.
Nothing is known about the date, or how Mary left the earth.
First: happy departure of Mary from the physical life.
Second: Assumption of her body into heaven. Two cities claim to be the place where it happened. Jerusalem & Ephesus. Her tomb is in Jerusalem.
Annunciation
Celebration of the announcment to Mary that she would be the Mother of Jesus, by the Angel Gabriel. (incarnation). This occured in the city of Nazareth.
LUKE 1: 26-38...
In the 6th month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man name Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary.  And coming to her, he said, "Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you." But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be, Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end"
But Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?"
And the angel said to her in reply, "the holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of  God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is  the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God."
Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her.
Immaculate Conception
Is the dogma that asserts the Mary, was perserved by God from the stain of original sin at the time of her own conception. That she was filled with grace by God, and lived a life completely free from sin.
Celebrated Dec.8th and established by Pope Sixtus IV in 1476. He just stopped short of defining the doctrine as dogma of the faith. Thus giving Catholics freedom to believe in this or not without heresy. In the 19th century the celebration was recognized as dogma, by Pope Pius IX .And consecrated by Pope Pius XII in 1942.  Supported by the words of the Angel Gabriel as :"full of grace" and why the church refers to Mary as the Blessed Virgin.
In the Old Testament, Genesis, appealed to the text of what God told the serpent "I will put emnity between you and the woman, between your seed and her seed." This is believed to mean that is fortold of a "woman" who would always be at enmity with the serpents-this is, a woman who would never be under the power of sin.
Our Lady of Guadalupe - Dec 12th
Appeared to ST Juan Diego as an Aztec Princess in 1531 near the present day Mexico City. Her message was one of love, compassion and hospitality. She continues to perform miracles, both at her shrine and wherever her name is invokes.
Patron Saint of the Americas.
Visitation - May 31st
Mary having heard that her cousin Elizabeth had conceived as well, left her home to spend 3 months with Elizabeth. When she arrived, Mary sang her song of praise, known as the Canticle of Mary of Magnificat (See prayers)
Solemnity of Mary
Mary Mother of God - Jan 1
was accorded to Mary during the Council of Ephesus in 413. It celebrates the fact that Jesus, although fully human in nature, was a divine person. Therefore, Mary was not just the mother of Jesus, but the Mother of God.
