Advent Wreath
Back to Advent
The Advent wreath is made from Evergreens. These branches as the name says are "ever green" ever alive. Symbolic of Jesus who died for us, but is alive never to die again. The branches also symbolize our soul's immortality. The red holly berrys on these wreaths remind us Jesus came into the world to die for our sins. Through the shedding of His blood He saved all of us.
Building a wreath: Take a evergreen wreath , and place 4 candles around the wreath one at each corner. 3 purple, 1 pink (other colors). If a center candle is used it should be white. Decorate to taste.
Symbolism:
The Shape: a circle, reminds us of God himself, no beginning and no end.
The colors of the candles:
Purple -
color of penitence, fasting, and royalty -also connects us to Lent symbolizing Jesus birth -through death.Pink: to lessen the feeling of penitence and turn more to the celebration of the season.
White:Lit on Christmas Eve or Day symbolizing the Birth of Jesus.
Materials needed:
A round circle, (pine or wood)  3 purple candles, 1 pink and a center candle (white) (see substitutions)
The color green in the wreath: speaks of the hope that we have in God, Hope of renewal, of eternal life.
Did you know that Advent wreaths were originally used in the home? They didn't begin to be used in churches until the 20th century.
The candles: represent the period the waiting for the Messiah - 4 centuries from Malachi - to the birth of Jesus
