Notes: I had so much fun writing this! I really hope you
all enjoy it. I always wished we had just a few extra
moments at the end of Existence, so this is my attempt at
continuing the scene just a bit further, and allowing them
to share an intimate moment together. I'd like to think
this really did happen. Also, thank you to my wonderful
beta, Carol! Not only for helping to make my work
presentable, but for being the incredible friend that she
is.

His Every Happiness
By DM

His heartbeat echoed deeply in his chest, blurring the hum
of the helicopter. He glanced at his watch for the
hundredth time and gazed anxiously at the trail of lights
below.

"Down there. Get me down there," his voice cracked.

The pilot nodded.

Glancing out the window at the clear night sky, Mulder
prayed. Even though the words were unfamiliar, he continued
to pray, hoping Scully's faith would be enough for the both
of them. For all three of them, he corrected himself.

He jumped and hit the ground running, even before the
helicopter touched the dirt below. The cars that were
parked only moments before now rushed past him, leaving. He
panicked and quickened his step, frantically calling out to
her.

Dust swirled wildly around him as he pounded on the windows
of the passing cars, demanding to know where she was. No
one stopped to answer.

From a short distance he heard his name. Monica. He was at
her side seconds later.

"How is she?"

"She's inside." He moved around her and was almost through
the door when she caught hold of his sleeve. "She needs to
get to the hospital."

Without another word he continued through the door. The
sight in front of him was enough to take his breath away.
There she sat, baby in arms, head against a dirty wall.
"Scully."

In a split second he was beside her, fingers running down
her cheek then through moist, matted hair. Catching his
breath as he searched her face, voice cracking, "are you
okay? Monica said you need to get to a hospital."

"I'm fine, Mulder," she whispered. He looked in her eyes,
disapproving her choice of words. She clarified, "really,
Mulder. I'm fine. But she's right, I've lost a lot of
blood."

"I'm gonna get you out of here, Scully." He bent down close
and brought his lips to her damp forehead, kissing her, as
he had so many times before. Pulling away, he spent a brief
moment letting his eyes roam over the bundle she held
tightly in her arms. Scully's baby. The miracle that was
never supposed to be.

He got to his feet and moved quickly to the doorway where
Monica still stood. "Agent Reyes?" She turned, weary eyes
connecting with his. "I need your help."

She smiled as she noticed the sweat beginning to bead on
his brow. She placed a gentle hand on his arm. "She'll be
all right, Mulder." Her words of comfort sprung a new-found
confidence deep inside him. She held her hand on his arm
for a moment longer, squeezing him softly, then walked past
him and into the room. He followed closely behind her.

Monica leaned down to carefully scoop the baby up in her
arms, whispering softly to him. Scully instinctively pulled
the child closer, but Mulder's soft words of assurance gave
her strength to trust the woman who'd just assisted in the
delivery of her baby.

Mulder gently eased Scully's tired body into his arms and
felt the dampness beneath her. The wetness, which he could
only assume was blood, made him flinch. "Are you all right?
Am I hurting you?"

"I'm okay, Mulder," she rested her head against his chest.
"Let' s just get out of here."

The trek to the waiting helicopter was a blur. The baby's
desperate cries and Scully's quiet wincing were all Mulder
could recall later.

Their arrival at the hospital was an even bigger blur than
the flight getting there. Scully pleaded that Mulder stay
with the baby as she was taken in for stitches and tests.
He was torn, but gave in to her request as he felt confident
knowing Monica would stay with her until he could be there
himself.

Hours that felt like centuries passed and it wasn't until
the twilight of dawn crept into her hospital window that he
was reunited with the mother of his child. Baby in arms, he
made his way to her fragile form, lying on the bed with her
back to him. Noting Mulder's arrival, Monica rose from her
chair and quietly excused herself.

"Hey there," he said softly.

No Answer.

Walking around the bed, he noticed her eyes closed as she
moved imperceptibly in a restless sleep. He hated to wake
her, but he knew she wouldn't know true peace until she saw
her baby boy.

"Scully," he said softly as he gently laid his free hand
over hers. "There's someone here to see you." She stirred
and slowly opened her eyes, smiling at the sight she beheld
before her.

Slowly pulling herself into a sitting position, she looked
up at him as he gently placed the child in her arms.

"Hey there little guy." She took a moment just to gaze into
the incredible blue of her son's eyes, then looked
into his father's own larger, but similar ones. "He's
perfect," she breathed.

"A little bald, but the nurses say that's normal." He
smiled back down at her. "How are you feeling?"

She let the faintest of smiles lift the corners of her
lips, then answered, "a little sore, but that's normal too.
They had to stitch up some tearing."

"You lost a lot of blood."

"Yeah," she admitted, "a bit more than normal, but I'm fine
now."

"You need to rest."

"I will. In a few minutes."

Agent Reyes stepped back from the doorway, not wanting to
intrude any further. Mother, Father and child, together and
safe. She turned to walk down the hall, knowing a couple of
men who would be relieved at the news.

-A few days later-

Scully broke the kiss first. William's soft fussing
subsided as soon as they did so. "I think we're smothering
him," she laughed. The sound filled Mulder's heart with
something he hadn't felt quite that strongly before.
Happiness, he thought, and most definitely love.

"How 'bout we put him down and continue where we left off."

"Good things come to those who wait, Mulder." Her smile was
infectious. "Besides, he needs to eat."

Mulder looked down at William, tenderness softening his
features. "Sorry, Fella, that's your mom's department.
She's got all the necessary hardware."

Another small chuckle from Scully, and William was lifted
out of his arms. She made her way back over to the bed and
sat with her feet up, back against the headboard. Mulder
stood where he was, unsure if he should give her privacy
and wait out in the living room. No matter how much he'd
love to stay and be a part of it, he knew it had to be her
decision.

"I can make us some tea," he began.

She looked up at him, eyes telling him that she understood
exactly what he was doing. Giving her space if she wanted
it. "Come here, Mulder."

Her smile intensified the feeling he had only a moment
earlier. He slipped off his jacket and took a seat next to
her, his back up against the headboard, slipping and arm
around her shoulders.

With one hand she unbuttoned her pajama top as Will
hungrily awaited his meal. The baby attached himself with a
fierceness that made Mulder wince. "Doesn't that hurt?"

"At first, yeah. But once you get used to it, it's kinda
nice. Relaxing."

"Looks like a real pro."

"Yeah, the nurse told me some babies have a hard time. But,
for this little guy, it came naturally." She sighed, and
leaned down to kiss his tiny forehead.

Looking around him, at Scully, at the miracle they somehow
managed to create, he couldn't help but marvel at where his
path had taken him. For years he had questioned why the
woman beside him hadn't thrown in the towel and left. She
had every right to do so, had lost so much that he found it
hard to comprehend how or why she even wanted to stay with
him. It wasn't until this moment in time, snuggled closely
together with their child in her arms that he realized why.
Just as he had found his every happiness, his every joy in
her, she had found the same in him.

"Thank you, Scully." Tears choked the back of his throat.

"For what, Mulder?"

"For this. For you. For William." He turned his lips to her
forehead and left a lingering kiss on her brow, letting a
few stray tears travel down his face. "I love you, Scully.
I don't think you know how much."

She raised her free palm to his cheek and gently turned his
face until his eyes met hers. Her own tears mimicked his,
as she inched her fingers behind his neck bringing him
closer and claiming his mouth with her own. With lips still
touching she whispered, "as much as I love you."

End.
