| Book Club Discussions Chapter 8 What do you see that might be engaging to many different students? Ms. Songis first grade classroom on page 242 is set up to be engaging to many different students. It offers learning centers that encourage literacy a publishing center, a set of different types of writing tools, a reading center, a center to explore the letters and even a typewriting in an office center. All of the learning centers could appeal to different students although the focus is all on literacy; she did a wonderful job in organizing many different aspects of literacy. The Basal Reader Selection Groups on page 249-50 also appeal to many different students since choice is given in the matter of what they will read. The same appeal is found in literature circles described on page 250-251. By allowing students choice in what they will learn and read, the appeal level is much greater. Another aspect to meeting several needs is found on page 253 with cooperative learning groups. The research shows that student achievement is higher in these groups than in traditional groups. Also, students can have different roles in the group, appealing to a wide variety of students. What do you see that might meet more than one learning modality? Ms. Songis first grade classroom provides yet more examples of meeting different learning modalities. By incorporating the tape player in a listening center, she can meet the needs of auditory learners. The room is labeled with charts, message centers, word walls and more to meet the needs of visual learners. Of course all of those by being read aloud can also meet auditory learners. An electronic music keyboard appeals to the musically inclined students. The learning center stocked with cereal and magnetic letters can aid the learners who do best kinesthetically. In all, she has covered a huge range to meet different students who learn in different manners. Page 257 also discusses how before children are placed in guided reading groups, how important it is to expose them to different stories, poems and songs. By doing so, a teacher can reach out to different learning modes. For example, singing appeals to one learning model, whereas finger plays could appeal to another mode. |
