Fortress V - Training Room
The scenery
certainly takes advantage of the sheer size of the training room, being at
least two hundred meters square. There is heavy cloud cover, and a light
snowfall, the ground covered with at least two inches of it. A light wind
sometimes whistles through the scenery, as well.
In the very
center of the field is a massive facility, a good thirty by fifty meters. The
walls are made of stone, reinforced with metal in some places, and everything
is cold and icy. The perimeter is a heavy defensive wall, rising about five
meters, rimmed with battlements, many of them. The corners of the facility each
have a tall guard tower, with similar fortifications, as well as a gun turret
on each. Gates in the wall are on the short sides, more or less in the center,
with forcefield portculli on either one.
In the
courtyard, there are several structures - a barracks in one corner, a vehicle
garage in a second, a firing range as well. None of them get above the
defensive wall, though, except for the one in the very center - the command
center. It rises to level with the defensive wall, four walkways to and from
the wall and the lower command center's roof. The upper command center is a
second structure on top of that one, with a heavy gun turret on top of that.
The area for
perhaps 10 meters around the facility is flat, but past that, the landscape
gets extremely hilly, and there are plenty of trees for cover. In one corner of
the 'map', there is a small collection of statues - marking this as Hailstorm
Eagle's simulation. She even seems to be updating these.
As for
objectives, there is only one prepackaged objective - there is a half-meter
sphere with the RF logo on it in the upper command center. If enabled, this
item needs to be taken from its cradle in the command center to a corner of the
map, which all offenders start in. Other than that, though... have a blast.

Hailstorm Eagle [Uniform] [RF] Random Simulation Generator
Out <O> leads to Fortress V - Main Deck.
Hailstorm is
up on the facility wall, engaging in a few solo sword drills with a gleaming
ice sword. something at her hip is new... a short cylinder of some sort.
The doorway to the real world (although Storm Owl would tell
you that, given that this room exists completely and although the solid
holographics are mere representations of other things, everything here is
entirely 'real') slides open, momentarily ruining the illusion of the metal and
stone fortress set within the frigid terrain. Through the doorway one can
briefly see the warm, comforting hallways of the Fortress V before Major Storm
Owl steps through and the door slides shut, eliminating the lone source of
warmth. Storm Owl gazes at the huge fortress, and although he cannot see
Hailstorm up on the defensive wall, he can hear the clatter and swooshes of a
sword being whipped about.
Swipe, swipe.
Hailstorm isn't attempting to block at all with the sword. All of her movements
are attacks - stabs, swipes, slashes, the like. Eventually, though, she swipes
downward a bit too hard and *SHATTER* the sword breaks, as it tends to do on
contact. Shaking her head a bit, she stands up and looks over to the opening
door. "Major Owl!" she salutes him.
Storm Owl peers upwards at the fortress wall and returns the
salute, sans thunderclap. The tactician takes another brief moment to further
gaze at the spanning fortress. His 'breath', from coolant systems and the like,
can be seen in the cold air. Storm Owl assumes that the ice sword is merely for
training purposes only and not for true combat, as a weapon which is destroyed
so easily has little use. "Sgt. Eagle." He replies. "Have I
interrupted anything?"
The eagle
does fully intend on using that weapon in combat - sure, it might be easily
destroyed, but she can always just make another. Hailstorm holds her salute,
replying, "Negative. I was running through some of the maneuvers
Flashlight's been teaching me."
Storm Owl inclines his head. "Excellent." He
intones as he releases his salute. "As it would seem Sgt. Harrier is
unwilling to take my advice, I suppose training you into a better soldier will
have to do," he concedes. He doesn't elaborate on what this advice in his
Christmas present to Plasma was, if Hailstorm doesn't already know. Storm Owl's
wings - shorter than other combat avians, but studier - flex outwards, and he
begins rising upwards to the battlement where Hailstorm is. "Has there
been any improvement?" he asks.
The eagle
releases her own salute as well, tilting her head at the comment about his
advice to Plasma. "Improvement in...?" she trails off, choosing to
let him finish the statement, and standing to meet him.
"Dexterity, swordsmanship, tactical knowledge, martial
prowess, combat ability, self-esteem," By now Storm Owl has landed near
the storm breaker, folding his wings back, "Mental conditioning,
confidence, professionalism, defensive strategy, battle-readiness." And
here he pauses briefly in order to conclude, "In short, your ability to
perform your function to Repliforce."
The eagle
gives a short 'hmm' to those. "Physical ability, probably a bit lax, but
mental, I... believe I've improved." She seems confident about it, at
least. "I've been doing more coordinating others in patrols, as per my
current assignment, than I've been doing patrols myself...." she pauses,
"Then again, an evaluation wouldn't hurt."
Storm Owl inclines his head, "It rarely does." He
replies coldly, noting Hailstorm's apparent renewed confidence and sense of
self-worth. Storm Owl is, of course, the sort of person that keeps a close
watch on his fellow Repliforcers for their various errors and flaws. It would
not surprise many, I'm sure, to know that the ever-logical mech has a personal
database of every trooper he's spent any amount of time with, detailing out
information about them. The Christmas presents were but a small, summed up
snippet of it. "Very well, Sergeant. I accept your requirement for a
training partner." Without warning, the war bird lifts off of the ground,
sturdy wings once again extended. Storm Owl is hovering about four stories up
from the battlement, peering down at Hailstorm. There's a very subtle hum as
his twin wing mounted wind generators begin to warm up, and the very air feels
like it is tightening and tensing, anxious for what it will be soon called upon
to do.
The eagle
ponders something momentarily... she would like to say it, but.. nah. Might as
well stay on his good side. At his leap and lift, she follows suit, coming to a
hover at his altitude and assuming a defensive posture. She doesn't seem to
have any particular defensive systems armed - no hum of a wind generator, or
anything like that.
The eagle
even leaves her rifle holstered for the moment - but she has other ranged
weapons. Lifting a hand, she begins to dim as she points at Storm, her
handtalon glowing before the talontip explodes in a bright beam.
Hailstorm Eagle strikes you with a solid hit from her Talon
Beam attack for 18 units of damage.
You take extra damage due to your Energy weakness.
Storm Owl watches as the talon is extended. One of his study
wings sweeps around protectively as the shot is fired, providing an adequate
defence to the blast. The beam slashes into the armoured wing, creating a
rippling effect over his entire form. But even while Storm Owl is on the
defensive, the war bird is already planning for his assault. With his wing
hiding his actions, Storm Owl draws out one of his forearm sized feather
blades. The cold golden-orange dagger glints briefly in the light as the Major
draws back his wing, revealing the weapon. In one fluid motion, Storm Owl
wordlessly slings the blade across towards the robot hovering in the air. The
dagger's speed is enhanced by a timely blast of wind, adding to the very
rapidly approaching threat.
You strike Hailstorm Eagle with a minor hit from your
Feather Missile attack.
Lowering her
handtalon and cutting off the beam, Hailstorm keeps her hover, putting her
hands together and preparing to move in to melee range. The feather missile
slices between her hands just as she pulls them apart, a small shattering of
ice as the premature weapon gets shattered, the missile continuing into her
midsection, causing her to stumble back in midair. Grunting at that and putting
a hand over her injury, a small blast of liquid nitrogen forms a makeshift
bandage - for now, anyhow. While she's busy with that, she beats her wings to
push herself backward - and possibly get the Owl stuck in a small windstorm.
Hailstorm Eagle misses you with her Wild Ride attack.
[Radio: (B) Main] Krieger Wolf transmits, "Hm...idle
curiousity, but what do you guys suppose Colonel meant by 'gathering
info'?"
[Radio: (B) Main] Archer transmits, "Reconnaissance,
intelligence, and data on who they are and how they function. At least, if I
were Colonel, that would be my definition of 'gather information'."
[Radio: (B) Main] Krieger Wolf transmits, "Oh, okay
then."
[Radio: (B) Main] Krieger Wolf transmits, "....wait.
Who the bloody hell are you and what are you doing on this channel?"
[Radio: (B) Main] Sgt. Hailstorm Eagle transmits, "That
you Archer?"
[Radio: (B) Main] Archer transmits, "I am Archer. Field
Commander of Crisis Response Team Alpha. Yes, this is me, Hail."
[Radio: (B) Main] Krieger Wolf transmits, "Hm, I didn't
recognize the voice at first. *whirrrrr....click.* Okay then."
Storm Owl finally moves from his position, using his speed
and mobility to his advantage. The war bird swoops upward, apparently having no
intention of falling into Hailstorm's melee range. Storm Owl is a ranged
fighter, and he knows where his strengths are. The Commander of the Fortress V
battlestation, coupling both his speed and his own control over the winds to
avoid the windstorm. As Hailstorm bandages herself up with her liquid nitrogen,
the tactician has swooped over the battlements, launching four explosive missiles
from his wing launchers on the fly. The missiles strike into various sections
of the wall and towers. How much damage is done remains depends on Hailstorm,
but the intent is to attack the weak parts and attempt to collapse parts of the
facility. Apparently Hailstorm is playing defence for this little scenario?
Regardless, Storm Owl swoops around towers, over walls, under bridges, past
turrets, through the courtyard, and around the barracks, firing off wind blasts
as he goes. His seemingly erratic pattern makes it difficult to follow after
him and take pot-shots... but surely Hailstorm is up to the task, no?
When the
eagle starts turning the winds to her advantage, she ends up momentarily losing
sight of Storm Owl... just to hear explosions below. What, is he going after
the facility? That's news to her, but she figures, might as well. Time to try
out another of her tactics.
Out comes the
rifle as she descends in a spiral, trying to match his vectors as the
explosives rock the towers, knocking the defensive structures offline and
unusual but not affecting the walls all that much. Putting the rifle to her
shoulder, she aims carefully, holding the crosshairs over him and trying to get
the firng capacitor charged....
Storm Owl appears to be keeping his optics forward, keeping
watch on where he's going as he zig-zags through the fortress's defence towers.
The crosshair over him becomes obstructed every second or so for just a brief
moment as he ducks underneath a bridge, or weaves behind a wall. His payload of
missiles launched, Storm Owl is relying on less impressive wind blasts to deal
damage to the facility. But while his attention seems to be entirely focused on
this task, his sensors are tracking Ms. Eagle and her rifle-wielding methods. The
war bird times this well, and abruptly circles around one of the higher towers,
vanishing from sight. But where one would expect him to appear on the other
side of the tower, there is nothing. Several seconds pass without him coming
out from behind the tower. And then, without warning, the top section of the
battlement is suddenly blown apart from a devastating cyclone, spewing the
debris towards Hailstorm. Storm Owl is now visible from where he shot the
tower.
You miss Hailstorm Eagle with your Cyclone Storm attack.
When Storm
Owl disappears, Hailstorm knows to expect him on the far side, but to be ready
to appear on the near side. When he disappears for a long time, she keeps her
sights on that tower, just as the *ping* of a charged capacitor sounds and
shows in her scope. Now he just needs to pop up...
The tower
exploding, she doesn't anticipate, but she'd had the foresight to remain on the
move and let the dumbfire debris strike nothing but air. And now that he's
visible, she aims, and she fires, a massive energy blast lancing downward
toward the Fortress Commander.
Hailstorm Eagle misses you with her Plasma Sniper attack.
If Storm Owl is impressed by the Hailstorm's foresight, he
does not reveal it. Instead, he is already moving. The crosshair is on him for
only the briefest of seconds, and when the blast is fired, Storm Owl has risen
above, streaking high into the air at an awe-inspiring velocity. The debris
that Hailstorm missed rains down on the fortress, likely doing nothing other
than chipping at the stone and armour. The war bird is already planning his
next assault on Hailstorm. The Fortress V Commander ascends into the heavy
clouds hanging overhead like a blanket, once again vanishing from sight. The
thick clouds are better for more than just providing a light snowfall. They
make excellent cover. From here, Storm Owl begins working the atmosphere to his
advantage, and there's a slight rumbling as if a thunderstorm were brewing.
Another roll of thunder is heard, this time much closer. And finally, a
deafening and disorienting thunderclap sounds off, hopefully near our very own
Ms. Eagle.
You strike Hailstorm Eagle with a glancing hit from your
Thunderous Salute attack.
Hailstorm Eagle is temporarily disoriented by Storm Owl's Thunderous
Salute attack.
The bolt
strikes... stone. Hailstorm chirps an only half-heartedly muffled curse as she
keeps the rifle trained on him, trying to get another shot off - nowhere near
as powerful, but at least something to keep the pressure on him. When he zooms
all the way into the clouds, she sighs, and starts to descend, trying to stay
between him and her makeshift charge.
The massive
thunderclap goes off nearly on top of her, her armor spiderwebbing as she
temporarily loses her senses.
Immediately following the thunderous assault, Storm Owl has
begun the descent from his cover, hurtling downwards towards both Hailstorm's
responsibility and Hailstorm herself. The aerial tactician swoops in close to
the femme, slashing at her with his well-armoured wings as he descends past her
at an alarming speed. Regardless of Hailstorm's condition after the assault,
the war bird has once again begun a strafing run on the fortress, preparing to
fire off additional wind blasts. Of course, the facility is huge, and it'd
likely take Storm Owl ages to do any serious damage to the majority of it. All
the while, the war bird's sensors are keeping an eye on Sgt. Hailstorm, as
Storm Owl is certain that there will be retribution coming his way rather
quickly.
You strike Hailstorm Eagle with a minor hit from your
Glancing Strike attack.
There is a
reason one does not engage Hailstorm in melee.
As she gets
cut on the way down, she loses light-seal to the gash, the rest of her stored
light getting shunted into an involuntary blast rivaling that of the sniper
rifle. She, however, cries out in pain as she continues to fall, eventually
getting her balance back and trying to recalibrate for the sudden loss of most
of her fuel supply.
Hailstorm Eagle strikes you with a solid hit from her Wide
Beam attack for 18 units of damage.
You take extra damage due to your Energy weakness.
Storm Owl's sensors watch Hailstorm as she abruptly and
unexpectedly launches a blast in his rough direction. This was not something he
had considered. Although it's not as accurate as the sniper rifle, the beam
seems to encompass a large enough area that there is precious little for Storm
Owl to go. The war bird's evasive maneuvers are halted as the beam slashes into
his form. The debris from a nearby tower also mildly struck rains down on him,
battering his wings. With each rock smashing into him, Storm Owl loses more and
more control, and eventually has to narrowly avoid a crash landing in the
courtyard, almost taking a good chunk of the barracks with it. But thankfully,
the Major is able to pull up in time to avoid that. His golden armour is
singed, and there's a slight tick in his left wing from the internal damage.
But despite this, Storm Owl summons up his reserves and turns about in a wide
arc to face his attacker. The Repliforce officer's twin wind generators strain,
and finally, with the precision that can only be gained from years of
experience, a pair of horizontal cyclonic tornados streak from Owl to Eagle.
You strike Hailstorm Eagle with a major hit from your Storm
Eagles Training attack.
The tornados
rip into the Eagle thoroughly, and she gives an agonized cry as she loses her
balance just as she regained it. First it's just shock, but as the tornados
actually do their damage, then it's out of pain. She attempts to wing over to
face him, then her optics widen as she realizes the extent of the damage.
Her wings are
gone, ripped off cleanly by the wind shear. She's falling, and falling fast.
Landing in
the courtyard and falling on her back with a sickening crunching noise, she
clutches the rifle still in her hands and holds down the firing stud, peppering
the officer's location with a barrage of fully automatic plasma projectiles.
Hailstorm Eagle strikes you with a solid hit from her Plasma
Autofire attack for 14 units of damage.
You take extra damage due to your Energy weakness.
Storm Eagle would be proud of that, no doubt. Perhaps,
anyway, the Maverick's former protégé considers. Storm Owl's left wing twitches
once again, almost sending him erratically off course. Whether this is the
cause for being caught in the sudden barrage that comes his way is impossible
to tell. But that's not important. What's important is that after Hailstorm
falls, and after she fires, and after Storm Owl is unable to avoid the vicious
assault, the Fortress V Commander's entire body is wracked with the heavy
blasts, ripping through his now-weak and partially melted armour plating on his
wings and torso. There's an audible grunt of discomfort and concern before
Storm Owl manages to recover a semblance of control. Each plasma shot meets
little resistance in the form of defensive armour now. The war bird tilts
awkwardly in the air as if unsure whether or not he's still flight-worthy. As
the answer appears to be barely a 'yes', Storm Owl watches Hailstorm, prone and
on the ground. His left wing twitches once again and threatens to become
unusable. Not believing he can summon up enough of a wind storm to keep him
suitable aloft with only one functional wing, Storm Owl has little choice but
to go down.
Descending
rapidly towards Sgt. Eagle, the war bird attempts to pull up just before
hitting both her and the ground, slash at her with his one good wing, and land
just nearby. The plan works to a degree. He descends near her, pulls up, and
makes his landing. The landing is rough, and the war bird stumbles, but he
remains on his feet and ready for whatever is next. And the slash? Well...
You miss Hailstorm Eagle with your Sudden Drop attack.
As Storm
descends, that's enough for Hailstorm to make her way to her feet, the two now
battling in the courtyard. Dropping her rifle rather than trying to put it
away, she places her hands together, drawing them apart and forming a gleaming
spear of ice in her hands. It seems she's out of light and out of rifle ammo,
so she's gotta go with what she has left.
The slash
barely misses her as she ducks, then stands straight again, wobbling a bit as
she's left unbalanced due to her wings being gone, turning to him and awkwardly
flinging the spear at him. For the moment, if he's watching, he gets a good
look at her face - in pain, definitely, but determined.
Hailstorm Eagle strikes you with a minor hit from her Forged
Ice - Spear attack for 9 units of damage.
You are below your courage-endurance point.
Storm Owl turns around to face Hailstorm. How ironic that
two masters of the sky are now on the ground duking it out like drunks in an
alley behind a bar. Also how ironic that Storm Owl was earlier musing how those
ice weapons don't seem to be terribly useful. The war bird does not think much
of either of those ironic situations. Hailstorm is back up, even if not stable
on her feet. Storm Owl is in a similar situation, needless to say. Drawing out
his other feather blade, the Major is too slow. Hailstorm beats him to the
punch and hurls the spear towards him. Even if the throw was awkward, it's more
than enough to clip Storm Owl in the right shoulder, very nearly causing him to
drop the dagger. Mech fluid dribbles down from the wound, and the spear,
imbedded in his shoulder, begins to melt due to his plasma-heated chassis.
Switching his last dagger from his now lame right hand to his left, Storm Owl
flings the blade towards Hailstorm. He's not attempting to do anything pretty
here by clipping her in a vital area. The Fortress V Commander is keeping it
simple and aiming for her chest.
You strike Hailstorm Eagle with a solid hit from your
Feather Missile attack.
You are below your courage-endurance point.
The eagle
stumbles as she follows through with the throw, the spear left to melt. Not
like she can't make more.. though she is running low on power.
The feather missile strikes her in the
chest, sending a spray of liquid nitrogen outward as she loses that function as
well, and she goes down to all fours, howling in pain.
No light.
No flight.
No ice.
The eagle
still has some fight left, though, and while it might hurt immensely even when
she moves, she scrambles to her feet, rushing Storm Owl and leaping into the
air in front of him, a foot talon aiming for his face; if it gains purchase,
she'll flip backward and take him on a bit of a ride, eventually slamming his
head downward into the ground behind her.
Hailstorm Eagle misses you with her Fury Of The Raptor
attack.
Plasma Harrier has connected.
Like a reed. Damnit, Iris. Storm Owl watches as his last
dagger, and his last best hope for taking his opponent down in this match sails
towards Hailstorm, strikes her square where he aimed, sprays liquid nitrogen
out of the wound, causes her to fall to the ground, and... does NOT finish the
defiant eagle off. So be it, Storm Owl considers, as he falls into a defensive
stance taught to him by the Hunter Simian Monk. His left fist is clenched and
ready, but his right is weak, and doesn't look like it's going to be much use
for anything anymore. The foot shoots up at Storm Owl, but he deftly avoids it
with a well-calculated parry. This saves him from the end result of Hailstorm's
little maneuver. Precision is going to be the name of the game for the end of
this match-up, and so Storm Owl advances towards Hailstorm, firing off a one-two
punch with both of his hands (the 'two' in the one-two being rather weak and
ineffective due to the extreme damage), ending it off with a sharp slash with
his talons, hoping to bring Hailstorm down for the count.
You strike Hailstorm Eagle with a minor hit from your Talon
Crush attack.
Hailstorm Eagle falls to the ground, unconscious, due to
massive systems damage.
You are below your courage-endurance point.
The eagle
ends up landing unbalanced as her foot talon is parried, getting a pair of
punches to the chest, the second ending up tearing out the back of her back,
sending a spray of what looks like glass behind her, then the slash sends her
spinning to the ground where she does not rise.
Storm Owl pauses, still tense and in his defensive stance as
if Hailstorm might rise up once again to further the assault. After exactly
five seconds, Storm Owl stands up straight. The two warriors are in the courtyard
of the stone and metal fortress. Around them is crumbling battlements, damaged
structured, melted steel, torn towers, and heavily battered walls. From high
above in the grey clouds, the snowfall continues its gentle assault on the
ground, and the wounds of the fortress are slowly being hidden by the white
blanket. Storm Owl gazes down at Hailstorm, concluding this match to be over.
Still wrecked, Storm Owl extends his good hand down towards Hailstorm, offering
to help her back up.
The eagle doesn't
immediately rise. Out cold, as they say.
Storm Owl is, if nothing else, patient, and remains in his
position. The holographic systems, sensing that the engagement is over, slowly
reverts itself to its previous state. Towers are rebuilt, walls reform up,
damage from structures vanishes, and the two combatants find their wounds fade
and vanish, revealing the truth behind the illusion.
Restored to
her shine, the eagle looks up from her prone position, seeing the hand and
taking it. "I guess I should have expected that outcome."
And just now,
the outer doors up on the observation deck opens up, with Plasma Harrier
stepping out and looking around.
Storm Owl finally speaks for the first time since accepting
the training assignment. "Incorrect. The outcome was not certain. There
was a notable improvement in your ability," he says in his monotone voice.
If one had an imagination they might think Storm Owl is mildly disappointed
when he has no choice but to offer praise to his troopers. But that's just
being cynical. Make no mistake, Hailstorm very, very nearly had Storm Owl
several times there. Pulling Hailstorm up, the war bird lets go and drones,
"There is potential there, Sergeant. Do not allow it to go to waste."
Nothing worse than potential resources going unused. The Aerial Battle Platform
Commander turns away from the femme towards the doors. If he sees Plasma - and
you can be sure he does - he does not acknowledge him.
The eagle
smiles faintly at that, nodding. "Thank you sir," she replies,
professionally, then pauses slightly. She hasn't seen Plasma either, it seems.
"Umm..." she puts a hand to her beakchin.
The harrier
blinks as he watches the owl leave without a word to his height. He blinks,
then looks down to Hail.
And as it did before this entire match, the doors from the
cold terrain of the illusion to the warm corridors of the real open up, and
Storm Owl strides through towards other parts of the ship.
The eagle
chuckles slightly to herself at that, "Well, that answers that..."
she looks to Plasma, waving to him, "Hey there, good timing."
Plasma blinks
turning his head and looking to Hail, offering a smile, "Hey... How'd your
training go?"
"Major
Owl said there was a 'notable improvement' in my ability," Hail shrugs.
"We just had a training match, he won, of course."
Plasma hmms and nods with a smile, "I see... Well that's good."
