Broadcasting Rooms - GNN Central

On this level of the GNN building, one can find all the manner of equipment and stages to allow the GNN to deliver its fine quality programming. The main area here is dominated by a singular yet curved green desk with a blue screen behind it. That area makes up the set where the general news broadcasts to the public are made. Off to another side one can find a small set used for the ever-popular interviews. This area can be configured to simply have two modern contoured chairs with the flag of the country involved freeze framed as flowing in the wind, or can be done with a smaller, more home style feeling with simple wooden chairs, desk, or table and a nice country house background. This area is also used to house the various GNN field equipment, from the cameraman’s light powerful camera, and the small anti-gravity cameras used for emergencies, to the odd looking microphones with the "Capcom" logo on them.

Colonel arrives from the GNN Central.

Colonel has arrived.

The broadcasting room of GNN Central is designed for all sorts of interviews, from blue screens to satellite feeds to multi-panel debates to just about anything else one can imagine. But for this, a simple layout has been organized with two chairs that face each other with a small table for water in the middle. A camera is placed discreetly behind each person so it can focus on whoever is speaking at the time. Behind each chair is usually either a plastic potted plant, or a large bookcase armed to the teeth with thick, hard cover books with large words on them that look deceptively worn out from overuse. The chances are, nobody in GNN has glanced at anything past the title, and the worn appearance is just to make everyone on screen look smart and well-informed. Amazingly, this sort of sutble trick works extremely well.

Chest is currently seated in one of the plush chairs, reading over his notes even though he's probably memorized it all by now. Colonel should be showing up any time now. Adjusting his decorative orange jewel on his chest, the GNN head honcho contemplates how he was really hoping for General, as then questions about Repliforce's new structure would be fair game. Ah well. Gotta save something for next time.

Colonel did arrive. There was no fanfare, nothing proclaiming his presence. He just showed up, looking as solemn and stoic as ever. Luckily GNN was set up for larger folks, otherwise he'd have had to stand. Moving through the studio, unguided by any of the likely intimidating interns, Colonel approached the seated Chest and waited to be pointed to his place before sitting. He was wondering why he was doing this again. He /hated/ interviews. They served no purpose save to make GNN look better. There were never really any important questions asked, and when they were, they were unanswerable due to classification. This was going to be 'fun'.

Chest smiles up at Colonel and stands up, extending his hand, "A pleasure to have you here, Colonel." He says with genuine honesty. A makeup butterfly Reploid flutters on over to briefly powder Colonel's nose if he'll allow it. "I'm glad you were available for this. There's a lot of people who are still worried about the sudden changes that our only real line of defence has undergone. Hopefully we can put some fears to rest, right?" And sure, make GNN look good. That's just a happy coincidence. The director (you can tell because he's a human with a scraggly beard, slightly overweight who's way more tense than everyone else), "Ten seconds!" he calls out. The make-up people flee, and someone quickly gives Colonel a glass of water if he wants it. The lights dim down low. 3... 2... 1... and action.

The Camera turns on.

Campy news music plays a darkened interview room appears. The light brightens to reveal... "Chest here, coming to you live from GNN Central in beautiful San Angeles." Chest can be seen seated in a comfortable, but low-key chair. Behind him is an array of bookcases with thick books that are apparently worn out due to over-use. A green potted plant can be seen just off to the side, and a glass of water on a coaster is in front of him on a low table that doesnt obstruct anyones view. To his right, also seated in a chair... "We have with us today the second most important mech for keeping us all alive and in good health: Colonel of Repliforce." Indeed, the large and in charge second in command is just to his right in another chair (with bookcases full of thick books behind him, naturally).

Chest idly reflects to himself. Huge Commander. Huge second in command. Huge flagship. Is Repliforce compensating for something? He pushes that thought out of his mind as the camera focuses on Colonel so he can give a greeting and such.

Colonel merely nodded his head once, his voice a rumble. "Thank you for inviting me, Chest. I speak for all of Repliforce in that we appreciate the fact that GNN wishes to keep the world informed of events." The Second peered at the director of GNN, his face impassive as always and waited. His greeting was done, now it was time to get loaded questions asked!

[Radio: (A) Global] Ballade coughs.

Chest hides a smirk. Now that the required sucking up is done... "Colonel, regarding the major Repliforce campaign to liberate Africa from the Robot Masters, would you say that's been pretty much as expected? This is Repliforce's first real long-term project since the United Nations revoked your clearance and sent you and your troops packing. It sure looks like Wily's been giving almost as good as he's gotten. But Wily can rebuild drones. You can't rebuild the lives of troopers."

He knew that sort of question was coming. Stifling a grunt and making it look like he was clearing his throat, Colonel answered. "It has been going as we expected, yes. Not one hundred percent according to plan, but it has been as we thought it would be." A bit of a pause, then he continued. "While it may be true that Wily seems to be equalling our efforts, the fact is, he is trapped. He has no bases of operation left. His last two spheres have been destroyed, and in the rainforest, it is impossible to wage anything more than a guerilla war. We will be victorious. They will be expelled."

[Radio] Tightbeam transmission: Ballade says, "I still find it interesting Colonel considers a Guerilla War a guaranteed victory. Especially considering what a large military force has done against implemented tactics of this kind in history... For example Vietnam."

"And then what?" Chest asks quickly, clearly knowing that sort of answer was coming. "As you said yourself, Wily has no other bases in Africa - that we're aware of - yet he's still able to put up a good fight against Repliforce despite this. Africa is a poor area, and while conquering his spheres is great, it does shorten his supply lines while increasing yours due to extra territory to protect. I guess what I'm getting at is, how exactly can you expel a guy who's still able to keep up the fight after he's... well... essentially already been expelled?" Chest leans back, pauses, and then adds as if it was an afterthought, "Is a guerilla war really a guaranteed victory? History has shown them to be bloody with surprisingly little accomplished by either side."

Colonel's eyes narrowed almost inperceptibly. This is why General handled things like this. Already, he was growing irritated with this. It didn't really matter what they did it seemed. No one would ever be happy with their efforts. "Wily is a madman. He does not know when to quit. Sane men would have stopped the first time I had him in chains." A bit of a cough, and he went on. "The fact is, we are embroiled in a war that has no forseeable end. There will be losses, there will be setbacks, it is unavoidable. All we can do, as the defenders of all, is to strive on and know that if we die, we do not die in vain. Victory will be ours in the end. For the sake of those who cannot fight."

[Radio: (A) Global] Dash cough.

This is definitely why General normally handles things like this. Chest wanted to interview General, but nooo! Chest's optics flicker briefly behind his shades at the mention of when Wily was first captured. But as the camera is focused on Colonel, it goes unnoticed. The GNN head honcho gives a slight pause of respect as Colonel plays the glorious valour card. "Fair enough," Chest finally says. But he quickly moves along, "It's true it's obviously not easy to simply put an end to a war like this, and that containing it is the best you can do. But speaking of which, how long does Repliforce plan to stay in Africa? Assuming Wily decided right here and now to pull his troops out of the rainforest and give Africa up for lost, what would Repliforce's reaction be?"

"Considering the infrastructure that was destroyed - unavoidably, perhaps - during this liberation campaign, (the destruction of the generators at the Mirror Desert for one), would Repliforce stay in Africa to help rebuild? Can the African people expect Repliforce to - and believe me when I say it pains me to word it like this this - but can they expect Repliforce to bring the standard of living back to where it was when Wily was in control? Or will Repliforce cut and run once the wartime danger is over?"

"We are not a government. We are not there to take the territory for ourselves. We are there to remove the negative influence and allow them to start ruling themselves. We have other objectives, we cannot stay solely in Africa. We will do what we can to help them rebuild, but there are other threats that will claim our attention." Colonel looked down at Chest, his face pretty much unreadable. "Our job is to protect and serve the world at large, not to rule it. If they are threatened, we will guard them. If there is strife, we will halt it. We will even help them on the road to recovery. We are not the United Nations."

[Radio: (A) Global] Flash Man transmits, "Ha! Either Colonel is the worst public speaker in the history of the Repliforce, or they're just as "evil" as the people they're claiming to protect against."

[Radio: (A) Global] Javelin Whitetail transmits, "I'll go with choice c: you're a friggin' eedjit."

[Radio: (A) Global] Javelin Whitetail transmits, "I'll admit, though. Th'rallyin' cry of many a group nowadays is "we're not the UN". Thank goodness for /that/."

[Radio: (A) Global] Flash Man transmits, "Oh, please. You realize that more than a third of Africa is without power right now, correct? Perhaps, if Colonel said that the Repliforce was staying to work things out, I would have some respect. Perhaps. But, he admitted to blowing up an entire continent's major power source and leaving. Yes, that's saving /so/ many lives."

Chest arches an eyebrow. Like Spock does when he finds something 'facinating'. Or... perhaps more like The Rock when he sees something that's in need of a good asskicking. "I hope I'm not giving Wily any ideas or anything, but if he (or say, the Mavericks, given that the Masters might be too weak at the moment) were to launch a full campaign against... oh I don't know, somewhere in Australia-" Chest pauses, coughs, takes a sip of his water that's on the table in front of him, and then rephrases, "Actually, I'll make this even better. If the Mavericks were to attack the United States with a large force, a country which is currently funding Repliforce in exchange for protection, would Repliforce pack up and go to the United States in order to protect it?" Chest tilts his head slightly, "I can tell you right now what happens when one regime is kicked out by an outside force which then quickly pulls out. There's a huge power vacuum, and somebody comes into a lot of power by promising to fix up all the things that were destroyed. That somebody might not be a very nice guy."

[Radio: (A) Global] Vanishing Gungaroo transmits, "Technically, Flash, it was /you guys/ who destroyed Africa's major power source and left, since /you guys/ put the Beta Sphere on self-destruct before retreating, not to mention you destroyed all the mirrors in the Mirror Desert with that laser you hit the Fortress V with!"

[Radio: (A) Global] Guts Man transmits, "That sounds like a crazy Repliforce story to me!"

[Radio: (A) Global] Vanishing Gungaroo transmits, "Heck no. I witnessed this with my own eyes. I was /there/ at the scene."

[Radio: (A) Global] Guts Man transmits, "Wrong again! I have a photographic memory and you were nowhere near the scene! You were busy drinking e-tanks and getting over energized which made you see crazy things!"

[Radio: (A) Global] Vanishing Gungaroo transmits, "That is so retarded I'm trying to resist laughing."

[Radio: (A) Global] Vanishing Gungaroo transmits, "/Any/ of the Betas can tell you I was there. I walked all over your Joes with my Ride Armor, for crying out loud."

[Radio: (A) Global] Guts Man transmits, "No, you're retarded."

Colonel looked like he wanted to let out a long suffering sigh, but he held it back. "Our forces are sufficent that, for a time, we could be both places at once. Of course, eventually, we would have to commit to one or the other." Conveniently, he left out which one they would commit to. "No matter what, we will not rule in Africa." His tone said that was the final word on that issue.

[Radio: (A) Global] Vanishing Gungaroo transmits, "I believe you've heard of the expression, 'the pot calling the kettle black,' haven't you? That /so/ applies to you right now."

[Radio: (A) Global] Guts Man transmits, "Look am I going to have to smash some sense into that thick head of yours? If Flash Man says you destroyed Africa then you destroyed Africa!"

MAIL: You have a new message (17) from Javelin Whitetail.

[Radio: (A) Global] Vanishing Gungaroo transmits, "You'd think that, because you're too dumb to think on your own."

[Radio: (A) Global] Flash Man chuckles. "All I'm saying is this: They're kicking us out because we're supposedly tyrants, then saying they can't stay, leaving a rulerless Africa. Not only are they deciding that they can police other countries, but they're leaving them in utter chaos.

[Radio: (A) Global] Javelin Whitetail transmits, "I'll take chaos over Wily any day of the week."

[Radio: (A) Global] Guts Man transmits, "I think you're the dumb one who's failed to understand what you've done in the process of this so called freedom. All the Africans are going to revert to eating sand and bugs and reverting to tribal cannibalism."

[Radio: (A) Global] Javelin Whitetail transmits, "Kind of like you boys, eh?"

[Radio: (A) Global] Blizzard Man transmits, "...Coold it be possible to make a sand-flavoored snowcone?"

[Radio: (A) Global] Flash Man transmits, "And their justification has always been that they're freeing the people of Africa. They could at /least/ go the realistic route and say the truth: They're afraid of Wily's power, and are attempting to destroy his bases to keep his influence from spreading, eliminating the need for a Repliforce."

[Radio: (A) Global] Vanishing Gungaroo transmits, "You forget that there is a stable governmental body forming in Africa. The African Regional Government is already in much of the northern and central areas of Africa, and wishes to expand to the South eventually. Hell, Colonel has already mentioned that the Repliforce will help them on the road to recovery."

[Radio: (A) Global] Javelin Whitetail transmits, "Repliforce...has my support in this. They've never tried to kill or /sell/ me."

"So where does the line get drawn?" Chest clasps his hands together and leans back, "Repliforce is not a government," he says, echoing Colonel's earlier line. "But how far will you be going to rebuild their lives? New power stations for them? New hospitals? Food? A new infrastructure? Or will that be up to them to work out?" Someone off camera waves to Chest and signs to him that he has an incoming transmission that's apparently important, but the GNN Honcho ignores it. He's busy right now and can look it up later.

"I'm sure your engineers are probably busy right now repairing your military assets that were damaged-" He means the FV, "-but these people need more saving than what a gun can provide. With the United Nations... well, in a dire situation, there's nobody else available to clean up the messes that can be made. If Repliforce doesn't, and if they aren't able to do it themselves, who will?"

[Radio: (A) Global] Flash Man transmits, "Right before mentioning that the Repliforce cannot stay there forever. It's a politically correct way of saying that they're getting ready to move out."

[Radio: (A) Global] Guts Man transmits, "I hope you're happy when reports of cannibalism spike tenfold in a week from now. By supporting Repliforce's actions, you support cannibalism. That's not the kind of world I'd want Guts Man Junior living in."

[Radio: (A) Global] Vanishing Gungaroo transmits, "But not moving out before helping them to the point where they'll be efficiently able to begin helping themselves out to recovery."

[Radio: (A) Global] Javelin Whitetail shudders in horror. Sounds of superstitious wards being made. "God prevent there ever being /another/ Guts Man running around."

[Radio: (A) Global] Flash Man transmits, "I seriously doubt that the Repliforce is staying that long. If he meant that, he would've said that. You can tell when somebody does something bad when they try to suck up to the world. I ask you this: How long /are/ the Repliforce going to stay in Africa? And "As Long As It Take" is not an answer. In my opinion, the best the Repliforce will do is bring some food and tents for a month before leaving."

[Radio: (A) Global] Javelin Whitetail transmits, "Oh wait, what's this...."

[Radio: (A) Global] Guts Man transmits, "Yeah, they'll probably leave for Germany to try and free the land of Mavericks, but then they'll all go Maverick and come back to Africa where they'll kill people."

Colonel answered honestly. "I do not know, Chest. I am a warrior, a commander. I am not a governor. I am willing to do what I can, but I am but one man, I cannot rebuild Africa alone." Inspiration must have hit, because he continued. "It is up to all the citizens of the world, reploid and human alike, to rebuild Africa. Every little bit that can be donated; time, money, food, supplies. All of these will be needed to give Africa the quality of life that they deserve, and they cannot do it without help. I implore that all of you watching this tonight do what you can." Topic Switch, complete.

[Radio: (A) Global] Javelin Whitetail transmits, "The Aztlans invite the less fortunate to join, with citizenship benefits. Wonder what'd happen if I asked politely."

[Radio: (A) Global] Vanishing Gungaroo transmits, "Perhaps we will stay for months. The African Regional Government will soon occupy the Mirror Desert and we can initiate the rebuilding of the power system that /you guys/ blew up yourselves -- using self-destruct -- not the Repliforce. As I said, the ARG wishes to occupy the south of Africa as well, and any rebuilding that takes place we will assist in."

[Radio: (A) Global] King transmits, "And if they reject you Repliforcer? If they do not wish your presence?"

[Radio: (A) Global] Guts Man transmits, "They'll probably go cry to someone."

[Radio: (A) Global] Flash Man transmits, "Assistance comes in many forms. Many are fancy words designed to deceive the rest of the world into believing in your "good intentions". You know the type: Moral Support. They're probably not even financially funding the operation. Colonel just asked on the news for anyone who can to help. In other words, "We don't care what happens to Africa. We just have a grudge against Wily. Since we're too lazy to open up a charity fund of our own, we're telling you to help the Africans. Ain't that nice of us?"

[Radio: (A) Global] Javelin Whitetail teethgnashes. Ouch.

[Radio: (A) Global] Vanishing Gungaroo transmits, "Coming from a force infamous for malicious deeds, sometimes performed for stupid reasons like stealing beer, lead by a mad scientist who once built a walking castle... I laugh heartily."

[Radio: (A) Global] King transmits, "This, coming from a miniature kangaroo stuffed within an oversized shell."

The camera focuses in on Colonel while he gives his speech. This is the sort of thing that's going to be replayed and replayed until it makes people sick. While POX or one of those shady candyass news organizations might just show the 'I do not know' part, GNN, the most respectable news organization on this planet, will show the entire thing. The speech also gives Chest a moment to reflect on it. Really, Repliforce can't do /everything/, and with the United Nations in deep trouble, nobody is in position to help out with the humanitarian needs.

Chest can beat about the 'how long are you going to stay in Africa' bush all day long, but Colonel's given a good response to it. "I hope your words are heard, Colonel, or there's going to be some hungry individuals soon enough." Chest isn't quite as cynical as Flash Man is. Everyone's in this together. Not just the Force. "Concerning Japan, Colonel, what is Repliforce's decision on it? Assuming Wily's claims to leadership are indeed valid, what will be done about it? It /was/ legal, but then Wily's vast number crimes are well known. Will Repliforce allow him to hide behind the Japanese shield, or should we expect military action against Japan to remove Wily from power?" After which, no doubt, the fricking Luxemburg President will keel over and name Wily as his successor or something.

[Radio: (A) Global] Flash Man transmits, "Really? Well, I don't hear you laughing. And I assure you that /I/ take no part in beer raids, and they are not, to my knowledge, recommended by our leader in any way, shape, or form."

[Radio: (A) Global] Javelin Whitetail transmits, "If I stood even a fighting chance, I'd try and wipe youse from the face of the earth, Wily's brats..."

[Radio: (A) Global] Flash Man transmits, "If /anyone/ stood a fighting chance, we'd be gone. And that's why we aren't."

[Radio: (A) Global] Guts Man transmits, "You're just jealous that your base can't walk. Oh sure it can fly whoop-deedooo, but it takes a realy genis to create something so big that doesn't lose its balance."

[Radio: (A) Global] Flash Man transmits, "Guts Man, unless they have extremely quick repairmen, their base can't fly any longer."

[Radio: (A) Global] Guts Man transmits, "Sucks to be them."

[Radio: (A) Global] Flash Man transmits, "Very much so."

"That is still under discussion in the Command of Repliforce. We are focusing on one task at a time, so that we may put all of our effort towards it. Rest assured that once we have reached a decision, we will act on it immediately." Colonel wasn't as bad at this as he thought he was, but he wasn't as skillful as General. "I am not quite convinced that the title of Emperor was given as freely as we have been led to believe, but that is neither here nor there."

General would have had Chest swooning with girlish glee by now. Ah well. Chest nods, but again arches an eyebrow. This one is the Spock eyebrow, though. Not The Rock one. "Well, I have to hope you're wrong about Wily's rise," Chest says with a chuckle. He and Interpol are still plotting about that. Oh yes, how they plot. Slowly, though. Very slowly. Chest also adds, "If I were Wily about now, and I was getting my bases annihilated in Africa, I'd be entrenching Japan with everything I had for once the good guys start coming for me. The only thing worse than a jungle war would be an urban one with civilians all about." Just the thought of that gives Chest the willies. "Do you think Wily is amassing troops there? And will you or Interpol be sending in your own spies and scouts to keep an eye on things?"

The Second chuckled ever so slightly. It may have been a cough. Who knows? "I cannot speak for Interpol. Our activities in such a sector are classified." Like he was going to spill about spying? Colonel straightened in his seat before continuing. "I am quite sure he is entrenching himself in Japan, but until we make our decision, nothing will be done, as long as Japan's actual government does not ask us for aid." Since. You know. The Emperor is a figurehead.

Chest nods in that way interviews nod which makes you suspect for just a split second that they're not really paying attention. But apparently he was, as he then says, "We're all eagerly awaiting the decision on that. Opening up another difficult war front with the Robot Masters..." Chest lets the rest go unsaid. It'd be one chaotic time for both Masters and Repliforce were that to happen. "One last question before we go, Colonel -" Chest raises a hand, "Don't worry, it's not a hard one compared to some of the others." Chest chuckles slightly, and it's Colonel's cue to do the same for the camera. "What is Repliforce's relationship with Interpol? You're both ex-United Nations organizations, you're both now in the employ of just about anyone who will pay you, and you're both in untested waters. Now you might not know, but did Interpol depart the United Nations because of Repliforce? To closer ally themselves with you? Or simply because it's proven... well, I guess I'll say 'successful' for the Force? And as a follow-up to that, what's Repliforce's position towards the United Nations currently? Friendly? Tense? Do you think the UN is even going to survive?" Ok, so that 'last question' was multi-part.

"As I have already said, I cannot speak for Interpol, you would be best served by speaking with Director Fairchild. I cannot say why they pulled free of the United Nations. As for the United Nations themselves, I bear them no ill will. I sincerely hope that they are able to rebuild themselves into the honorable orginization they once were before Black SHIELD began manipulating everything. If at that time they wish us to aid them again, I am sure that we will consider it. Until then, we will continue to do as we have been."

Colonel said that. Yes.

Chest would, but Director Fairchild seems rarer than a sober Robot Master on St. Patty's Day. It's almost as if she's avoiding him or something. But surely the organization in charge of secrecy and spying wouldn't want to avoid the organization in charge of telling everyone all the secrets out there. Chest doesn't say that, though. The GNN bossman considers asking Colonel about whether Repliforce would sign onto the UN again if so asked, but decides not to. He'll save that for General, along with his planned ripping-apart of Repliforce's new mercenary ways. The camera focuses on Chest, and he says, "Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to be here, Colonel. Good luck to you and to Repliforce to recover after your African campaign." The camera focuses on Colonel in case he wants to say any final words.

Colonel just nodded once. "You are welcome. It has been a pleasure." Not really. It's been a giant pain in the skidplate, but he wasn't going to say that. That would be rude.

And with that, the awesome music composed by Javelin Whitetail plays again, and we go to commercial.

The Camera turns off.

Chest stands up once the cameras stop and once again extends his hand, "Seriously, Colonel, thanks for stopping by. I know you and your troops have a long, hard road ahead of you, and I don't envy your position right now." The 'thank you' on the air is just the routine you have to go through. This is the real one.

Colonel rose to his full height and adjusted his hat before clasping Chest's in a professional and cordial manner. "It was not a problem. The more that people realize that we are looking out for them, the more inclined they are to trust us." Releasing the mogul's hand, Colonel's dropped to his side. "If you will excuse me, there is much work to do." With another nod, the Sword started back out the way he came. He had bidness to get did.

Chest looks up (and up!) and nods, "No sweat, Colonel. Have a good day now, y'hear?" he says, pulling out a cigar box from underneath the table that was holding his glass of water. Within seconds, Chest has lit up and is smoking away. The prince of media watches Colonel depart and then hovers off the set to find out what that incoming transmission during the broadcast was all about.
