25.4310002 Certified Nursing Assisting: Class and Off Campus Experience

GRADES 11 - 12

I.COURSE DESCRIPTION:The Certified Nursing Assisting course is designed to give the student knowledge and training in certified nursing assisting, to include the areas mandated by the Georgia Medical Care Foundation. Both classroom and off campus clinical training will be included in this course.Students must provide their own uniforms and transportation to and from clinical sites.NOTE:When CNA clinicals start, the student must be at the clinical site at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays in order to satisfy the state requirement of contact hours for certification.Upon satisfactory completion of the CNA course, students may be registered by the state as Certified Nursing Assistants.(They may obtain jobs in the health care setting prior to actual certification and participate in a work co-op/internship component.)

II.BASIC TEXTBOOK:American Red Cross Foundations for Caregivingwill be the assigned textbook. The course will be supplemented by the American Red Cross Responding to Emergencies textbook, Diversified Health Occupations textbook, as well as other materials and handouts.

III.MAJOR OBJECTIVES:The students will have the opportunity to demonstrate understanding/proficiency in:

<>Basic Knowledge: (communication, infection control, safety/emergency procedures, promotion of resident independence, resident rights) 

<>Basic Nursing Skills: (vital signs, care of the dying patient, care of resident environment, recognition/report of changes in body function) 

<>Provision of Personal Care for Residents: (bathing, grooming, transfer/positioning/turning, assisting with eating and hydration, dressing, toileting, skincare) 

<>Mental Health and Social Services Needs: (CNA/Resident relationship, pyschosocial needs, aging process, intervention skills)

<>Restorative Nursing: (adaptive devices, training resident in self-care)

<>Residents' Rights: (Residents' Bill of Rights, appropriate use of restraining devices, maintaining privacy and confidentiality)

<>Care of the Cognitively Impaired Resident: (techniques to address needs of individuals with dementia, methods of reducing effects of cognitiveimpairments)

<>General Workplace Readiness and Selected Medical Terminology/Abbreviations.

<>Selected Emergency Care of Individuals

<>Certain Specialized Areas of further study based on student interest.

IV.EXPECTATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:Each student is responsible for:

<>proper care of any assigned textbook/equipment.

<>maintaining a notebook for class materials.

<>all assignments/labs whether or not he/she was present (made up outside of class).

<>coming to class on time (being in appropriate place and ready at the bell) and prepared (textbook, standard size notebook paper, pencil/pen --STANDARD BLUE OR BLACK INK ONLY, stethoscope), etc.

<>checking log book for materials, assignments, and other communications upon returning to school after an absence.

<>proper attendance and attire on clinical training / work days.Note:Students are responsible for obtaining their own uniforms and transportation to/from off campussites.

V.EVALUATION:The student will be evaluated in the following manner:

VI:CLASSROOM REGULATIONS/PROCEDURES:As this is a class to prepare future health care professionals, each student is to behave in a professional manner, reflecting self-control and cooperation.Professional learning materials are a must; therefore, non-standard papers or inks will not be accepted for grading.Uniforms must convey a professional appearance; therefore the student’s uniform must be kept clean and neat, with stains promptly removed.Abuse of others in any form will not be tolerated.RHS has some of the latest technology available.Proper use of equipment is required.Intentional misuse will result in disciplinary action and possible restitution for any damaged equipment.Equipment and books are to be appropriately cared for and properly put away at the end of the class period.Desks/work areas are to be left clean and neat.Off campus site training regulations/procedures are listed in student contracts.
