25.4220002 HSTE II:Basic Allied Health Care Skills

GRADES 10 - 12

I.COURSE DESCRIPTION:The Healthcare Science Technology II course is designed to give the student a background in basic health care skills; employability/leadership skills; and postsecondary program research to enable the student to better select appropriate postsecondary training in health care career areas.

II.BASIC TEXTBOOK:Diversified Health Occupations, 5th ed.A classroom set of American Red Cross Responding to Emergencies textbooks will be used for the first aid/CPR training.The course will be supplemented by other handouts, publications, and materials.

III.MAJOR OBJECTIVES:The students will have the opportunity to develop understanding and limited proficiencyin the following areas.

<>Vital Signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure)

<>Basic First Aid Skills

<>Infection Control

<>Isolation Techniques

<>Applied Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathophysiology of the Body Systems

<>Infant and Child Basic Life Support Techniques

<>Automatic External Defibrillator Techniques

<>Oxygen Administration Techniques

<>Advanced Communication Skills for the Health Care Provider

<>Advanced Applied Mathematics -- Apothecary System and Dosage Calculations

<>Postsecondary Program Research

<>Employability/Leadership Skills

IV.EXPECTATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:Each student is responsible for:

<>proper care of any assigned textbook/equipment.

<>maintaining a notebook for class materials.

<>all assignments/labs whether or not he/she was present (made up outside of class).

<>coming to class on time -- being in appropriate place and ready at the bell.

<>coming to class prepared -- textbook, standard size notebook paper, pencil/pen (STANDARD BLUE OR BLACK INK ONLY), stethoscope (when issued), etc.

<>checking log book for materials, assignments and other communications upon returning to school after an absence.

V.EVALUATION:The student will be evaluated in the following manner:

VI:CLASSROOM REGULATIONS/PROCEDURES:As this is a class designed to prepare future health care professionals, each student is to behave in a professional manner, reflecting self-control and cooperation.Professional learning materials are a must; therefore, non-standard papers or inks will not be accepted for grading. Abuse of others in any form, physical or verbal will not be tolerated.Students must wear ID badges each day after they are issued -- this is a daily grade item.RHS has some of the latest technology available.Proper use of equipment is required.Intentional misuse will result in disciplinary action and possible restitution for any damaged equipment.Equipment and books are to be appropriately cared for and properly put away at the end of the class period.Desks and work areas are to be left clean and neat each period.
