GRADES 9 - 12

I.COURSE DESCRIPTION:The Healthcare Science Technology I course is designed to give the student a background in the foundations of allied health care with an emphasis on an orientation to health occupations and exploration of health careers.Additionally, students may elect to certify in American Red Cross Adult CPR.

II.BASIC TEXTBOOK:Introduction to Health Occupations, 5th ed. will be the assigned textbook. A classroom set of American Red Cross Responding to Emergencies textbooks will be used for the CPR training.Other supplemental materials kept within the classroom may also be utilized.

III.MAJOR OBJECTIVES:The students will have the opportunity to develop understanding and limited proficiency in the following areas.

--Facility Safety Procedures and Disaster Preparedness

--Principles of Body Mechanics

<>Introduction to Medical and Technical Terminology and Abbreviations

<>Basic Structures of the Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems

<>Introduction to Basic Life Support -- One Person Rescue Skills

<>Introduction to Health Occupations’ Mathematics Applications

<>Health Occupations Entrepreneurship and Career Specialization Research

IV.EXPECTATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:Each student is responsible for:

<>proper care of any assigned textbook/equipment.

<>maintaining a notebook for class materials.

<>all assignments/labs whether or not he/she was present (to be made up outside of class).

<>coming to class on time -- being in appropriate place and ready at the bell.

<>coming to class prepared -- textbook, standard size notebook paper, 

pencil/pen (STANDARD BLUE OR BLACK INK ONLY), stethoscope (when issued), etc.

<>checking log book for materials, assignments, and other communications upon returning to school after an absence.

V.EVALUATION:The student will be evaluated in the following manner:

VI:CLASSROOM REGULATIONS/PROCEDURES:As this is a class designed to prepare future health care professionals, each student is to behave in a professional manner, reflecting self-control and cooperation.Professional learning materials are a must; therefore, non-standard papers or inks will not be accepted for grading.Abuse of others in any form, physical or verbal will not be tolerated.Students must wear ID badges each day after they are issued -- this is a daily grade item. RHS has some of the latest technology available.Proper use of equipment is required.Intentional misuse will result in disciplinary action and possible restitution for any damaged equipment.Equipment and books are to be appropriately cared for and properly put away at the end of the class period.Desks and work areas are to be left clean and neat each period.
