News

There was a record attendance of 60 riders at the DMBC social ride last Saturday and plenty of drinks on the deck overlooking the ocean afterwards (beat that 'Maritzburgers) .  This week we'll try to keep the drinks in the glass.

You can get one from Social Sue on Saturday if you haven't already.  A DMBC tee shirt of course. Nothing in the post.

Remember to ride the 7km of mtb-specific technical singletrack at Stainbank nature reserve in Yellowwood Park sometime soon (before we add some really big jumps).  This section was not open when Ashley Nesbitt wrote the article which appears in the latest Ride Magazine, but his comments about the sweet s/t apply.  (If all the copies of Ride seem to have been bought up, ask Andy Clemmow to let you look at one of his).

Karrimor Karkloof Classic MTB Tour

Venue: Karkloof Country Club

Registration: 6:30am

If you haven't entered yet, there is a late entry fee that is guaranteed to make you enter early next year. R85 late entry fee for 65km, R65 for 35km. Late entry is R30, not R20 as reported in The Witness (possibly KZN's most bike-friendly newspaper - Karkloof is possibly KZN's most expensive mtb race). Entries on www.sa-active.co.za  until Tuesday 8 May cost R50 (65km) and R35 (35km).

10km race is entry on the day only. (No late entry fee !!).

The Karrimor Karkloof Classic is KZNs largest Mountain bike event (mostly farm and forestry road - not a very technical course at all). In 2000 it attracted nearly 1000 participants in three events. It is a slickly organised affair, and prizes and prizemoney are always top notch. A great atmosphere at the Karkloof Country Club, which is used for registration, start and finish and prizegiving. Ablutions, food, and entertainment

The 35 km event is a challenging and extremely scenic option for those not wanting to tackle the Classic, and the 10 km fun ride should keep the rest of the family happy!

If you missed the Thin Air Challenge in southern Lesotho, or if you're interested in mtbiking in Botswana or Pilansberg game reserves, or in Madagascar, Ethiopia (serious) or pretty much anywhere else, contact Kirsten Burrows of Biking Dynamics Tel: 011 4477013 or 083 326 6721 [email protected]  Kirsty is an experienced adventure racer and mountainbiker (and roadie) who has the job we all dream about and runs very reasonably-priced commercial mtb tours.

Mountain bikers of all ages can look forward to a new development of the already established Blinkwater Hiking Trails. The trails were developed as a joint venture between Mondi, Sappi and KZN Nature Conservation Service and are managed by the Umvoti Branch of the Wildlife and Environment Society.  The area is scenically stunning, with a wide variety of terrain, from valleys and vleis to the upper grasslands of the Blinkwater Nature Reserve. The mountain biking trails will be geared to accommodate family groups wherein specially laid out trails will take the more conservative mountain biker along routes to the overnight huts and for the more adventurous, maps with GPS readings will be handed out.  The trails will compliment the already existing hiking trails and the four overnight facilities will be available to mountain bikers as well as hikers. All the camps are in scenic settings and will accommodate twelve people. Bunk beds with mattresses are provided, along with showers and flush toilets, but visitors are expected to bring their own cooking equipment. Braai fireplaces, firewood and water are provided at all camps. As with the hiking trails, the mountain biking trails are not day trails but overnight trails using the superb facilities provided. There are two start / finish points to the trails where vehicles can be parked in safety. Contact Sue Swan on tel/fax (033) 5070047 (office hours only) or Rebecca Stamp [email protected]
