Wingate Matthews

Enlisted in Union Army on March 6, 1862 at age 46 with Captain L. P. Day's Company D. 3rd regiment of Delaware volunteers. He was discharged during September 1862 at Harper's Ferry, Virginia by reason of disability. A cannon fragment went through his knee and he walked with a cane for the rest of his life. His name with this Delaware regiment is buried under the East Monument in Antietam Maryland Cemetery. This monument was erected in honor of this company in 1957.
