I like Nathaniel Cole Park. This is one of the county parks developed around an artifically created lake. Cole Park is a well known destination in the summer for its swimming, boating and picnicking facilities. It is located less than half an hour from Binghamton and access is maintained in the winter. The park is open for hiking and cross-country skiing. The buildings are closed in the winter but a portable toilet is available in the parking area. The park land is a combination of mixed woods and open spaces. The hiking/ski trails are well marked.

Who was Nathaniel Cole? This is a natural question. Cole Park is located in the town of Colesville. Even though there is a Colesville Road and a West Colesville, the crossroads formerly known as Colesville has pretty much disappeared. It was named for Nathaniel Cole (1747-1832) a veteran of the Revolutionary War who arrived in 1795 with his wife and seven children. Relocating from New Milford Connecticut, Nathaniel Cole could trace his ancestry back to Mayflower Pilgrims. As I understand it it was common for persons who had risked life and treasure to join the rebellion against the crown to receive land as compensation for the risk they took. Most of this land came from newly "liberated" Indian or Tory land.
In any case, Nathaniel Cole, along with his son, Nathaniel Junior, built a tavern at what is now the intersection of Colesville Road (or Farm to Market Road depending on who you ask) and Watrous Road. This is located a little east of the entrance to Cole Park. The road leading past the park entrance and on to "Colesville" was the major route between Binghamton and Albany and the Colesville Tavern was a stopping point for the stage coach trade traveling between the two cities. This tavern was managed by three generations of the Cole family between 1800 and 1870. After ceasing operation as a tavern it remained in private use until it was razed in the 1920’s after over 120 years of use. Nathaniel Cole is buried at Cole Hill Cemetery along with other members of his family.
Directions - If you have a favorite route to Cole Park take it and think about how Cole Park got its name. If you are not familiar with its location take NY route 17 to West Windsor where a sign to Cole Park will direct you to turn north on North Road. Continue following the signs and turn right on Farm to Market Road where indicated. This will take you to the entrance to Cole Park. If you continue past the park you will come to the intersection where Cole’s Tavern was situated.
