His grey hair is tinged with the bright flame red that once adorned his head. His green eyes are often misty as he is continually reminded of all the friends he had in his former life that are that this time just beginning their Academy training.

Psychological Evaluation

Psychological Evaluation: Captain Martin Mably, StarFleet Academy
Date: December 2382

"Five and a half years have passed since I last evaluated Lieutenant Cho. He has been through a lot during this time so that he has seen a great deal of growth.

Chief Medical Officer's Log: Lieutenant Josie Rai, U.S.S. Abrams
Date: October 2379

Ship Counselor's Log: Lieutenant Julie Ostrom, U.S.S. Princeton
Date: September 2379

Ship Counselor's Log: Lieutenant Amanda Rose, U.S.S. Avenger
Date: March 2379

Psychological Evaluation: Commander Martin Mably, New Aberdeen Proving Grounds
Date: July 2377

"Lieutenant Cho is an oversized stunt pilot. Personally, he seems more suited to have been a pilot in the mid-twentieth century circuses than in StarFleet. However, we do work with several experimental models and engines that make some of our engineers and pilots worrisome. Bareil possesses a eager spirit to go out and do whatever is necessary to completely test each shuttle that is made--destroying most of them in the process. However, it is his attention to detail that makes each draft of the engine specifications that much better than the model before."

Psychological Evaluation: Lieutenant Lionel Atkinson, StarFleet Medical
Date: August 2374

"Lieutenant Cho Bareil, formerly a Colonel in the Bajoran Militia, does not seem like your typical Bajoran recently coming out of the Occupation, having a war fought above your skies and joining the Federation. It seems that he almost expected things to go this way. Although he professes great respect for the Prophets, it is this psychologist's opinion that this profession is worked and he simply feigns allegiance to the Prophets while having an aire about him that doesn't quite bode well for a career in StarFleet. However, this is simply a personal observation made after a few minutes of conversation and may be missing the mark completely on him."

Psychological Evaluation: Colonel Ord Marsi, Bajoran Militia
Date: July 2389

"Having survived an attempt on his life, having sustained a rather prolonged kidnapping yet without physical torture, Bareil seems in incredibly high spirits. This is no doubt caused by the news that he will be rejoining his wife aboard the Federation's U.S.S. Tempest starship. Since she has returned into his life, he seems more energized and enthusiastic than I think I have ever seen the man named after the 'Great Fireballer of the Bestri Woods'. And that is saying much. In this military psychologist's opinion, he is well-suitable for returning to work in whatever field he chooses."

Ship Counselor's Log: Lieutenant Junior Grade Gabriel Matthews IV, U.S.S. Tempest
Date: September 2387

"As this is my last action as Ship's Counselor of the U.S.S. Tempest and my lack of knowledge about this crewman, I will give general impressions and hope that my replacement will update this log with a better report. Unfortunately, I must go with only what I have in the service record before me. Having been ceremoniously thrown out of an airlock from his first starship and imprisonment on Cardassia IV, Lieutenant Cho has many obstacles to overcome. However, he seems to be quite attached to the Tempest's new Science Chief. From a look at her record, she might be exactly what he needs at this juncture for social development and improvement."

Ship Counselor's Log: Lieutenant Jenaria Dut, U.S.S. Frontier
Date: January 2387

"Ensign Cho is an immature young man with an insatiable passion for women and getting himself into trouble. If he makes it through his first mission aboard the Frontier, my professional opinion would be to commit the rest of the Frontier's crew to a mental institution."

HISTORY
Early Childhood
Bareil was born to Cho Rali and Marra on May 9, 2361. Rali was a worker in the ore-processing plant known as Terok Nor. Marra was a Dabo girl at Quark's Bar.

Bareil was a mischievous child who kept his parents and their Cardassian overseers off guard any chance he got. The biggest stunt he pulled was trying to set the Cardassin half of Terok Nor's promenade on fire a week before his fourth birthday. Bareil was the only one injured in the stunt as his fire was quickly put out by a Cardassian soldier using Bareil himself to stamp out the fire. He was turned over to the Bajoran medical officials. He was taken to the Bajoran Infirmary where he was treated for second-degree burns over 40% of his body.

New Bajor
The Cardassian Withdrawal saw a new chapter open on Bareil's life as it did for the entire world of Bajor. The Federation's presence on Deep Space Nine, although relations were tense at first, helped Bareil's family greatly.

After the Wormhole was discovered, his family was chosen in the first wave of colonists for New Bajor in the Gamma Quadrant. Bareil's tendency towards fire was kept under control as he was satisfied with Science experiments in school where he was able to use old-fashioned Bunsen burners to heat different chemistry projects.

He returned to Bajor once in his childhood. The school on New Bajor set up a field trip to Bajor where the students would tour several of the monasteries and hike through the rugged hill-country in the Dahkur Province. This trip was scheduled for June 1-10, 2370.

The late evening of June 8 welcomed a glorious sunset on Bajor. Half a galaxy away, the Jem'Hadar were finishing the annihilation of the colony of New Bajor. The students found out 39 hours later that their parents were dead.

Orphaned
Bareil, being an only child, was immediately sent to the local orphanage. Several of the students on the field trip were given to distant relatives. However, the majority of the students' entire families were on New Bajor.

Bareil was quite unhappy for most of his time in the orphanage. The object of his prepubescent affection, Ro Nerys, left the orphanage for a job on Deep Space Nine after a year. He also had problems with the interpretations of the regional Vedek. One such argument, about Capt. Benjamin Sisko being the Emissary, ended with Bareil trying to set the orphanage on fire.

He was transferred to another orphanage where life seemed to get better. His love of fire started to turn into a love of flying. He started building model warp engines and starships. For his fourteenth birthday, the local Vedek and the orphanage chipped in to get Bareil a sub-orbital ultra light. He practiced flying with his ultra light during the final year of the Dominion War.

Shuttle Pilot
As his fifteenth birthday rolled around, the local Vedek got Bareil a job as a shuttle pilot between Deep Space Nine and Bajor. Bareil proved to be very skilled with shuttle piloting so his supply routes were expanded to include the post-war colonies in the Gamma Quadrant.

It was during one of these trips that he and his one-time object of affection, Nerys, crossed paths. He was running quite a streak of luck at the Dabo table before the dabo girl was replaced with a shift change. Bareil started to go after the dabo girl until he saw her replacement ... Nerys. Bareil went back to see if he could get another shot at the woman he had dreamed about for the previous five years.

However, Nerys had already found someone to share her life with. Bareil got a "five-knuckle" introduction to him as he tried to get Nerys into one of Quark's holosuites. Ni, Nerys' then-fianc, sent Bareil to the Infirmary with a broken jaw. Bareil decided that it would be best to stay away from Nerys and just live with the fact that she was with another man. He continued his trade route for another five years.

StarFleet Academy
During that time, his interaction with the StarFleet officers on Deep Space Nine and Bajor influenced him to join StarFleet. September 6, 2381 saw him step into a classroom for the first time in almost a decade. He aced his navigation classes, but he wanted something with a bit more challenge. He spent an extra two years so that he was qualified in Engineering and Security.

He kept his flying skills sharp as he became a member of Nova Squadron in his third year at StarFleet Academy. The end of his fourth year at the Academy saw him promoted to Nova Squadron Captain.

U.S.S. Frontier
After graduating from StarFleet Academy, he was assigned as the Flight Control Officer for the U.S.S. Frontier (NCC-75769) of The Sixth Fleet.

He was scheduled to meet the Frontier at Starbase 202, orbitting Arcadia. While he was waiting for the Frontier, he met into a bit more disaster around a dabo table. He noticed an odd frequency of winners around the dabo table. In fact, he noticed that was a winner every third spin. He confronted the dabo girl about it, but he was confronted by a human claiming to own the table. A brawl broke out between the two men taking out several tables in Wayland's Bar. The "owner" and dabo girl were taken into custody. Bareil made sure that the table was inspected.

When the inspected showed the table to be clean, Bareil went to the security office where the two were being held. Bareil chatted with the dabo girl and said that he had cleared her of the charges. Bareil propositioned her for some companionship after learning that she was 16. This prompted the security guard, who had been listening to the conversation, to arrest him for propositioning a minor. He spent the following week waiting for the Frontier to arrive so that he would be handed over to the XO for further discipline if deemed necessary.

Once Bareil was handed over to Lt. Commander Luta and got settled on the Frontier, he ended up in more hot water. Bareil mistook an order to clean the filters for the sonic shower system as an order to clean the sonic showers. While cleaning the showers, he was interrupted by Crewman 2nd Class Walker Zamora. After a tense situation, Zamora left and Bareil resumed his work.

Bareil crossed paths with Zamora again when he reported for his mandatory physical. Bareil became quite belligerent regarding their previous encounter. A complaint was filed by Zamora and Bareil was transferred off the Frontier to the U.S.S. Vanguard (NCC-63548).

U.S.S. Vanguard
Bareil arranged for transport from Starbase 202 to Bajor where he was to be picked up by the Vanguard. Bareil was needed on Bajor to get a plant that was required to make a vaccination to treat a neuro-toxin that was affecting several members of the Vanguard's crew. Bareil's first duty with the Vanguard was to work with the Medical staff and Science staff to get the vaccination ready and track down where the neuro-toxin had come into contact with the affected members of the crew.

After the neuro-toxin was contained and eradicated, Bareil took his position as an Engineering officer. He found himself in the midst of a major secretive operation trying to extract the Vanguard's Chief Security Officer from Cardassia. Within a couple of light-years of the Cardassian-Federation border, the Vanguard was rundown by the Cardassian warship Aldara and a couple other warships. He spent the trip manning the Engineering console on the Bridge while the Vanguard, whose warp core had been locked down by the Chief Engineer as well as all command codes locked, was towed back to Cardassia.

As a Cardassian prisoner, he was placed in charge of Engineering when Lt. L'iem was rendered unconscious for some unknown reason. Due to L'iem's debilitated state, Bareil served as the Acting Chief Engineer.

Also during this time, Bareil started to develop a relationship with the Vanguard's OPS Manager, Lt Faye Lockwood. The relationship started as Bareil claimed that he and Faye were living together when they were escorted by armed Cardassian guards back to their quarters between shifts. As the impending sentence of Cardassian prison camps loom, the two seem to be getting closer together and a true bond seems to be forming.

While in the Cardassian prison, he got into a fight with a majority of the guards. He suffered several broken ribs and a slight concussion from the brawl. Faye wasn't too happy when she found out the fight was his fault, but his admission of guilt kept a riot from breaking out among the Vanguard crew.

Once the crew was released from their Cardassian prison, he took on the additional role of Flight Control Officer. With the conveyance of the new position, he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade. Upon arrival at Starbase 1 in orbit of Earth, Bareil and Faye went to Paris for Faye's brother Danny's funeral. After the funeral, Faye informed him of her request to transfer off the Vanguard. As the Prophets would have it, she received a transfer to the U.S.S. Tempest. He received news of his transfer to the Tempest as a Flight Control Officer.

U.S.S. Tempest
Bareil kept his transfer to the Tempest a secret from Faye. He had received orders concerning the Essex mission. When he finally admitted that he was being transferred to the Essex, he thought everything would be cool. However, he misread the notes for the Essex mission and arrived at Arcadia a month beforehand. He kicked himself because he'd have to avoid the Tempest's Chief Science Officer for a month while both were on board.

He came aboard the Tempest a day before Faye and set to work as the Flight Control Officer. Upon reporting for duty to LtCmdr Frances Clairmont, he was informed that he was being transferred to Engineering. He was momentarily bummed over the transfer, but his typical grin crossed his face as he realized the stunt he could pull on Faye.

He reported to LtCmdr Diego de la Vega for his Engineering appointment. One of his duty items for his first day was a replicator repair in the main Science lab. Bareil saw his chance for a great deal of mischief at this point. He repaired the replicator, but he modified the power flow to go into a buffer reservoir. Once the reservoir overflowed, it would trigger a Borg invasion alarm in the Science Lab. He set the power flow to take a couple of days before the alarm would go off. He timed it to make sure that Faye would be on duty when it went off.

The alarm went off and Faye instinctively contacted Security. Bareil had not figured that into his equation. The alarm dissipated after a minute. After everything was checked out and she was assured that there were no Borg on the ship at any time in the recent past, she placed it on the Engineering duty roster to find the cause.

Bareil was in charge of the team he assigned to work the Science Lab issue. He instructed his team to check every square inch of the lab except for the area around the replicator. He also said he'd be there in about ten minutes to fix the problem.

The crew went out and stalled for Bareil as he climbed from Engineering to the CSO's office via the Jeffries tubes. Faye was being antagonized by a crewman from Bareil's team devoted to keeping her away from her office. Bareil quietly stepped up behind her and asked if the crewman was bothering her. She turned around quickly and Bareil was surprised he wasn't slapped. Faye dismissed the Engineering team and decided to deal with Bareil's insolence.

Shortly into his first mission aboard the Tempest, he found out that his only living relative had died on October 18, 2387. Nerys had been a childhood sweetheart and a great second cousin. However, she was gone now. With no family plot, she was buried in a commoner's cemetery in Drakkur province. Bareil has yet to visit her grave site.

The first mission for Bareil on the Tempest was a rescue mission for the U.S.S. Churchill. During this mission, Bareil used his Engineering skills to earn himself the Star Cross.

After the Churchill mission, the Tempest was assigned a "shore leave" mission to an archaeological dig on Mendel Prime. He met with the daughter of an old flame, Crewman Second Class Olin KiJana. After the two exchanged a series of piercing remarks, Bareil and Faye continued to see how the rest of the archaeological dig was progressing.

The Tempest was on its way on a relief mission to the Denarius system when Captain Bradley Hawthorne of the U.S.S. Ranger warned the Alpha Quadrant of an impending Jem'Hadar attack. The Tempest responded to the call. Maybe Bareil will get himself involved in the "hot seat" again.

During the battle with the Jem'Hadar fleet, Bareil became the temporary Helm officer after the Bridge was deemed unusable. His actions during the final battle at the Idran end of the Bajoran wormhole earned him a Starfleet Commendation.

While waiting for the Tempest to be repaired, Bareil proposed to Faye who gladly accepted (April 17, 2388).

Bareil's first mission as an engaged engineer dealt with a distress call from the U.S.S. Heimlich. The entire crew had disappeared from the ship at once. Bareil and Commander Diego de la Vega realized that the problems were with a highly-advanced, self-replicating computer virus that was affecting the entire ship after a couple dozen of the Tempest's own crewmembers had disappeared. The virus tried to take Bareil, but he was able to overload the transporter beam which wanted to take him who-knows-where with a phaser.

U.S.S. Illustrious/Thermopylae
After the Heimlich was rescued, Bareil earned a promotion to Acting Lieutenant Commander and was transferred to the U.S.S. Illustrious. After the initial shakedown cruise, the Illustrious was dispatched to check on the status of the U.S.S. Aurora, which had broken off contact with StarFleet Command.

The ship had been taken over by Romulans. The boarding party was quickly captured. Bareil worked quickly to get the entire boarding party beamed aboard the Warbird and then the Illustrious.

The next mission had the Illustrious using Borg transwarp conduits to get into the Delta Quadrant. What they didn't expect was to find themselves catapulted into a Class-B star. Once the crew had escaped from the doomed ship, they were quickly picked up by the U.S.S. Constantinople. The transwarp conduit had taken them into Bolarus.

The crew was given new orders. Bareil reported as Chief Engineer of the newly-refit U.S.S. Thermopylae (August 20, 2388). Not quite a month into the Thermopylae's mission (September 13, 2388), Bareil was confined to his quarters and reprimanded for illegally using the ship's computer. Bareil proclaimed his innocence, but Commander Lim would hear no excuses.

Leave of Absence
No longer feeling that he was a fit for StarFleet, Bareil requested a leave of absence. He requested it for personal reasons, but he really had none. The first thing he did was tell Faye. He wanted her to know where he was so she didn't worry so much. She had enough to worry about as the Executive Officer of the U.S.S. Resolution.

Bareil went back to Bajor. For the first time since Nerys' death, he went to her grave site (December 1, 2388). The time on Bajor was emotional for Bareil. He was happy to be "home", but the longer he was there the more he felt the stars were "home". He spent the next two months going back and forth between Bajor and Earth, preparing for the wedding.

Wedding of a Lifetime
The wedding was a glorious affair with members of the Tempest, Illustrious/Thermopylae, Resolution and Vanguard serving as attendants. The marked difference was the hole left in each side of the attendants line. A space was left open for Nerys, but another space was left open for Faye's brother Danny. Both had died in the year prior to the wedding. However, neither Faye nor Bareil would let the day go without acknowledging their places in their lives.

After the wedding, Faye and Bareil returned to Bajor to begin their new life together. The Resolution was decommissioned so Faye asked for a three-month leave for her honeymoon. StarFleet Command graciously accepted the request.

Bajoran Embassy
When Faye's leave ended in May, Bareil was assigned diplomatic duties at the Federation Embassy on Bajor. Instead of his Engineering or Navigational knowledge, Bareil relied on his extensive minor in Security for this job. He worked as an Ambassadorial Envoy for the Federation. Two months into his work on Bajor, he was kidnapped by a group of terrorists in Iluvian province. He managed to escape their prison and make his way back to the Embassy in a matter of days. Captain Calloway, head of the Federation Embassy's security department, had him shuttled off Bajor for his own protection and reassigned to be with his wife on the Tempest (July 11, 2389).
Back in Space
Bareil was back in space. He was back on the Tempest. However, he was now a Security Officer. His good friend Fred DeLance had become the Chief Engineer during his absence. Bareil was happy for him, but now he had to work for LtCmdr Theresa Cassidy, a woman who he hadn't always rubbed the right way.

To inform Faye that he was ok and on his way to be with her, Bareil managed to contact his buddy Lt Manny Rodriguez from the Tempest's Science Department. He had him replicate the hybrid species of iris that Bareil had made especially for Faye. This stunt got him an informal reprimand from Cassidy and a tongue-lashing by Faye.

Shortly after his arrival on the Tempest, things began to change aboard the ship. All of the sudden, he found himself as a medical officer. He was adept at healing a broken bone here and a cut there, but he was grateful at the end that he did not have to perform surgery on anyone.

Disappearance and New Life
The Tempest made its way back to Starbase 517 for restocking of supplies. A noncoporeal entity which had been broght to the Starbase on the U.S.S. Potemkin telepathcially began influencing the males on every ship to do odd things. At one point, every female crewmember was locked into the brig of the starbase and the docked vessels. One woman tried to get away in a shuttle craft. Bareil pursued, but was unable to catch up with her. His shuttle came into contact with a chroniton field which enveloped the shuttle. According to StarFleet records, he is missing in action in 2389.

The chroniton field shoved Bareil back in time to 2355 (August 3 to be exact). He was twelve light-years away from where Starbase 517 would be built twenty-four years into the future. He contemplated his situation. There was no trace of the chroniton field anywhere in scanning range. His first instinct was to contact StarFleet Command. However, the Federation had no contact with Bajor at this time. Bajor was not a member of the Federation. It was still occupied by the Cardassians.

Bareil knew what he had to do. It would go against everything he had been indoctrinated with at the Academy, but it was the right thing to do. The only place he had to go was Bajor.

On December 12, 2355, after four months of avoiding contact with Federation and Cardassian vessels, Bareil arrived in orbit around Bajor. He took a geosynchronous orbit directly opposite Terok Nor. He readied the transporter to beam him to Lenar province. At the same time, he started a two-minute self-destruct sequence. Forty seconds after he dematerialized on the shuttle's transporter pad, the shuttle blew itself to bits.

Resistance Fighter
Bareil was confident enough that he figured he could pass for a Bajoran of the time period. However, he knew that his knowledge of how the Occupation would turn out might influence the timeline and cause it to go disastrously wrong. Bareil decided he had to become a Resistance fighter because it wasn't in his nature to be a collaborator.

He started by enlisting in a small cell in Lenar province on March 6, 2356. He then moved on from Lenar to working in Dahkur and Kendra provinces. During the next four years, he rediscovered his love of fire as he became the cell's best arsonist.

2360 saw quite a bit of change for Bareil. February had him with the Pental Resistance cell in Dahkur province. The cell was pinned down in a firefight with Cardassian guards at an Armory. Bareil was one of two cell members to make it out alive from the failed attack. The other was Keir Knara, the one woman since Faye that Bareil had fallen in love with. Eventually, she died by a phaser shot while evading the Cardassian troops following them. As the last member of the cell to survive, Bareil made his way to Colar Mountain.

Bareil quickly gained the trust of the cell holding down the area around Colar Mountain. The cell made several runs into the Bestri Woods against the Cardassians where Bareil's love of fire became the highpoint of the missions. His fires to cover their retreats were invaluable. The last venture resulted in a large forest fire which had grown out of control. The cell hoped that the Cardassians would worry about the fire more than the rebels. Shortly thereafter, the cell decided to head their different ways to avoid further detection by the Cardassians.

August 2360 found Bareil in Recantha province. He was found by the Lathrin cell, dehydrated and nearly delirious. Despite the typical suspicion of a cell with a new prospective member. Their first mission was a recovery operation. One of their own had been captured by the Cardassians. Bareil quickly became an advantage as they were able to spring their captive cellmate. Bareil burned a large mound of trash in very close proximity to the encampment. The cell then went on to carry out other measures of havoc throughout Recantha province. Bareil's pyromania and decent aim became great assets for Colonel Lathrin. The cell spent another six years together with raids on Bajor, Terok Nor and Bajor VIII. The most pivotal moment for Bareil during this time was a visit to Terok Nor in May 2361--to see his own birth.

Bareil's ego began to become a problem for other members of the cell. Bareil was kicked out of the cell. He then found himself wandering through Iluvian province. While there, he became acquainted and somewhat attached to a resistance cell. The major battle Bareil was involved in happened as the cell overthrew the Cardassian Gul overseeing one of the mining colonies on Jeraddo (May 31, 2369). When the Occupation was finally overthrown, this victory earned Bareil the rank of Major.

Bajoran Militia
Bareil was placed in command of the provincial militia of Dahkur in September 2369. Bareil took as many chances as he could to be on Terok Nor as often as the Provisional Government would allow. He used visiting the Emissary as an excuse and feigned great religious interest. However, he did it so that he'd be able to check in on himself. In March 2370, Bareil used his knowledge of the future for the only time. He was assigned to colonial militia commander of New Bajor as well as offered a promotion to Colonel. However, he knew that the colony would be destroyed by the Jem'Hadar in less than three months time. He feared that his presence would change things or that he'd try to save his parents (who were original colonists). He turned down the order and the promotion was revoked.

Bareil spent 2371 and 2372 putting out fires for First Minister Shakaar throughout Bajor. He kept himself in Dahkur mostly so he could keep an eye on himself. His work during the Dominion War helped him earn the rank of Colonel on January 22, 2374. His help with organizing the Bajoran defense of the StarFleet mining of the entrance to the Wormhole granted him great favor with the Provisional Government. Seven months later, after heavy casualties were suffered by the Federation in the Dominion War, Bareil decided it was time to force himself into history in a more powerful way. He took the IEIMO exam to be accepted into StarFleet again.

U.S.S. Princeton
On August 28, 2374, Cho Bareil once again held the rank of Lieutenant in StarFleet. He was assigned as an Engineer aboard the Ambassador-class U.S.S. Princeton. His knowledge of Federation technology impressed the Engineering staff and Command staff. He was promoted to Chief Engineer on May 4, 2375, after Commander Dimitri Zhanderson was killed in the battle over subspace communications relay AR-558. The nearly-crippled Princeton was a challenge for Bareil, but it reminded him of the Heimlich rescue mission of 2388.
