Course Description: Global Awareness is the 9th grade social studies course at CGS.  It is designed to provide students with an understanding of the major trends and problems in World History from the Middle Ages to the present, with a particular emphasis upon European civilization.  As students master course content they will focus upon the development of such skills as writing, critical thinking, and oral argumentation.  Problem-solving strategies are utilized to teach basic social science skills such as map-reading, research, comparison-making, and the assessment of cause and effect.  The course is a challenging one that requires rigorous, diligent study.  Students will be prepared for the World History (1000 AD to the Present)/World Geography Standards of Learning test and will be eligible to take the AP European History Exam (see below).

  • Modern European History by Birdsall S. Viault -- This study guide will aid students in preparing for tests and the A.P. European History Exam.

A.P. European History Exam:   The College Board Advanced Placement program offers high school students the opportunity to earn potential college credit by scoring well on exams offered each May.  One of the goals of our course is to help prepare interested students for the Advanced Placement European History Exam, the date TBA.
