The Association of Chiropractic Colleges definition is "Chiropractic is a health care discipline that emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health. In addition, doctors of chiropractic recognize the value and responsibility of working in cooperation with other health care practitioners when in the best interest of the patient."
What is Chiropractic?
Simply put, we treat malpositions of the spine (subluxations) which may cause nerve interference thus allowing certain areas of the body to function improperly. Pain, soreness, stiffness, and muscular weekness as well as a variety of organ functions can be caused by subluxations.
What does Chiropractic treat?
Since Chiropractic treatments have a direct affect on the neuro-muscular system, any condition which may be caused by interference to these systems can be improved. Some include headaches, neck pain, mid-back pain, low back pain, extremity pain, joint stiffness, muscle tension. Several doctors of chiropractic have gotten great results for patients with asthma, bed wetting, stomach, kidney, lung and heart problems. Remember all these areas have nerves that intervate them that come from the spine. If the spine is malpositioned and causing compression of these nerves, whatever they intervate will be affected.
What should I expect from my Chiropractor?
The first visit is the one that will take the longest. Expect to be at our office for 45 minutes to an hour. That will allow you to fill out all the required paperwork, and for the doctor to do a thorough history, exam and x-rays if needed. Depending on the situation, you might be treated on the first day, or the doctor may feel that a careful review of the exam and x-ray is needed before treatment begins. You will then be given a full Report of findings about your complaint, at that time we will review the x-rays with you and tell you whether or not your condition is a chiropractic case that we can take.
How long will treatment take?
It is important to remember that your condition did not get that way overnight, most complaints that we treat are due to years of postural bad habits, repetative actions that certain joints must do at your work, or any other enviromental factors that directly or indirectly affect the spinal column. Recent or even historical trauma that has not been addressed also may be causing your complaint. Although you will feel relief after your first visit, don't expect us to be "One Hit Wonders". There isn't a chiropractor in the world that can help the body to fully heal with one visit. Every person respondes differently to care. A trial period of two to three visits is needed to see how you respond, at the end of the trial period the doctor will be able to tell you more about the length of time and cost to fully repair your body.
If you a concerned about finances. Most insurance companies cover chiropractic treatment. Please bring in your insurance card and drivers license on the first visit and we will verify your coverage.
