Home grown technology :
Proton short for Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional has come a long way from being just a car assembler for Mitsubishi, to what it is today. It is now producing its own car from ground up (models like Waja, Gen-2, Savvy and the latest Satria Neo). Models like the Wira and Iswara are still in demand (rebatch for Mitsubishi makes) for the local Malaysian market; mainly for taxis and cheap limousines. It is hoped that with Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) that was signed with Petronas to develop a bigger capacity engine and a an environmentally friendly engine can materialize sometime in 2007 as this will enable Proton to produce more models in different segment (i.e. SUV,MPV which Proton currently lacks). With the Campro engine now in mass production (1.3 liter and 1.6 liter), it is the nations hope to see bigger capability engines (up till 2.5 liter), to enable Proton to develop different multitude of platforms.
Proton has proved that, the automobile industry is not exclusive to the western world only. If we want to succeed, we can achieve it by hard work and determination. Lets not make failure a hinderence to success. Lets hope, Proton engineers will produce something on par or even better then the other auto players in the global market.
